View Full Version : Cutout Opacity in MIA material causes crash?

Hey Guys,

I've been trying to use a cutout opacity with various meshes ( hair planes, feathers, cloth as well) and it never fails, maya crashes everytime that I try to render it. In my test scene, which contains just a ground plane and a box mesh who's mia material has a checker for cutout, it renders beautifully, but as soon as i bring in an actual mesh, maya crashes. I've looked everywhere for it, but nothing is really working.

I tried going back to the transparency attributes of the mia material, and it actually works fine, but only if there's no objects behind the mesh that i want some opacity on. If i render the mesh itself with a transparency map, i get a perfect matte in the render, but as soon as I put an object behind it, the matte gets a black outline on the transparent mesh, which, of course would mess up my matte...

Anyone got a clue what i can do? I'm totally out of options.

Hi
no problem here if you check Alpha is Luminance and set the Filter type to Off

the setup with 02 files

Rachid,

I'll definitely try that as soon as i get back to my scene file. I always do a mipmap filter on all my textures, i never thought that it was the filter type that would crash my scene (hopefully.)

Allright,

It's working a little bit now, if my render cam is pulled back from my feathers, it works, but as soon as i change it and do a closer up, it crashes (at about 35% in batch render.)

I tried applying it to a new scene which comprises a sun and sky setup with a roof with glass windows, and it actually works fine there, but it ended up crashing after a couple renders. I'm really at a lost of explanation as to why it would work, and then suddenly decide to crash again. If you have any idea Rachid (or anyone else reading this post) i'd appreciate your thoughts.

Hi
no problem here with camera pulled back and closer up!
Sorry I've no idea, maybe you have a lot of textures that need to be converted to map file, or some loosing uv or geometry.. or your mask file is not pure black/white..
Try debugging your scene:
Render=>Run Render Diagnostics and see what you can correct
set the Verbosity Level to 5 then you can see all the warnings and errors message in the Output Window
So this is just a suggestions

Thanks for the tip...I didn't get why I had this ugly black border around leaves. Setting filtering to off on alpha texture solved that nicely. :)

Hi,

All working with Mia_material_x, thanks on help.
BUT, Mia_material_x_passes have same problem - Maya crash.

Any sugestion?

hi
no problem here, but I've to mention one important thing: the only difference between the mia_material_x and mia_material_x_passes when rendering is the raytraced shadow!
with mia_material_X, by default when rendering you get a raytraced shadow without tweaking any things, witch is not the case with mia_material_x_passes!
To get a raytraced shadow with mia_material_x_passes you have to change the shadow Method from Simple to Segments otherwise you can get a raytraced shadow!

When we involve ambient occlusion with the cutout opacity. Is there a way to get the same results without AO affecting the areas outside that?

hi
No problem if you use it with mib_fg_occlusion, please read this thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=87&t=739458)

No I think it's about visual Sutdio8
like I said install Softimage 7.5 and copy the corresponding dll the latest version 3.7.52.5 (architectural.dll; base.dll; contour.dll; physics.dll; production.dll; subsurface.dll) and all work fine!

Hi.
I have the same problem wich i try to solve fo long time.
I found only one mashine (x64) wich do not crash(all other mashines-x32 and x64 does crash) and i have no idea why its happend.
BTW mia material X do not crash maya, only X-passes.
I will try to replace shaders from softimage, when i find them, but for now its still crash(
