View Full Version : Texture Driven Greeble Type effect?

This hopefully won't sound to vague, I've recently been inspired by an Idea I had for a short music video. but My question specifically and I have no idea how to go about doing this..
is this:

taking a plane, with many many divisions, and extruding all the squares up individually. or it might be easier to invision a greeble type effect.
I would like to animate thousands of extrusions of squares going up and down, to say... a black and white height map. Ultimately I would like this to look like water, but with a more tron, pixel, computer tech look if that makes sense. the resolution wouldn't be so high that you couldn't see the squares rising and falling in tandem, but at the same time I want them to be small enough to seem somewhat fluid

I hope I've been somewhat good at describing what I'm trying to achieve here. I can get a drawing up if anyone is still confused..

any advice or ideas is GREATLY appreciated as I have no idea where to go, and this is the main point of this video I'm trying to make so with out it Im pretty much stuck :-/

thanks again

What program are you using?

If 3dsMax, you could use a Vol.Select to pass a texture based selection to a Greeble modifier.

I started out on 3ds max so I know it fairly well, but nothing complex in that because I learned it in high school, and we all know how much our high school teachers really know.

I use Maya in college right now, at full sail so I'm very used to, and comfortable using maya.

any ideas on how else to accomplish this, maybe in maya?

and thanks for the idea for max!
I'm going to go give that a try.

actually I discovered that I can map a texture to the local translate of an extrude history node. problem is I can get it to extrude all squares together, or it doesn't work at all..

I feel like I'm close here to a solution in maya. but I'm still not sure what to do from here

any idea's off of this ??
