In the beginning there was Max and it had a Modifier Stack and low, it was good and moderately easy to turn things on/ off or collapse operations (modifiers).

Then there was Maya and its History/ Outputs and a terrible gnashing of teeth and thumping of keyboards etc...

Anyway... i want to know how to delete history on a characters mesh without also deleting the skin node. Basically i was dumb enough to animate before texturing (i.e i have a whole load of uv chopping up history) and now the character is only playing back at 8fps instead of realtime (as before).

No, i can't easily export/ import skin maps as i used a load of lattices as well (2 months to skin and rig), i know this is probably a bit of a basic question but i would appreciate being pointed in the direction of any tutorials on the hypergraph/ history/ deformation order stuff.

Hmm, I don't know of any tutorials on it, but this script supposedly deletes history while maintaining the skinning:
