I am all but sure to be able to submit a final entry, but I'll try to find the time to work on that one.
I have no clear idea of where I want to go, probably I'll just try to show one or two of Tesla's inventions at work.
Here's a quick test to see what I can achieve trying to do a realistic Tesla coil in action.

I used Nuke and sapphire plugin "zap" for the lightning. I'm still not sure if that's the way to go if I want to do an animated shot with a lot of those sparks.

Right now I think I might try to recreate the effects in the scene from "the prestige". I'll probably use 2D sparks composited into a 3d environment.
I should be able to get good results with a few light passes and using 2.5d techniques to match the reflections/lighting of animated sparks. I collected a few references and there are a lot of youtube vids to help getting the timing of the sparks right.
I hope to be able to post an update for the end of the week.
I'm really interested in the ones going for a 3d way of generating lightning. Something with particles, particle generated splines or XSI's ICE could maybe do the trick. I've watched some stuff describing how Lsystems works in houdini, and I'd say it is probably be the best way to get something animatable and with predictible parameters in 3d. Whatever the way of doing it, it is quite tricky and a good way to learn.
As I have no time to do more, I will just try to recreate the scene and the type of effects of a scene from "The prestige".
I will only do one shot of just a few seconds. As I will probably have barely more than 3 days to do this until the end of the month and I want to take the time to tweak little details without rushing, it is probably best to avoid trying to do too much.
here is a snapshot of the scene I will recreate, + a first render (barely more than a previz, materials/geometry/lights are not finished at all). I intend to do a lot of postwork in Nuke and I don't know how I'll do the peoples.
First try at a comp. Just a still image done quickly. I didn't use passes and there are lots of things I want to do to make it more realistic. Materials, geometry and lighting still not fixed at all, but I find that quite promising taking into account the short time I spent on it.

Thanks guys! indeed the sparks are 2d, I think it will be the easiest way to get something good quickly. The tricky part will be to make the light match the sparks, but I think I'll be able to do that with additional light passes and a bit of keyframing in comp.

Considering how much time you are putting in to this, this is looking fairly impressive! I like the lightning a lot! Looks really great! I'm still modeling for my entry, but I think that it will pay off... hopefully! Good work look forward to seeing more!
I did a list with what I want to improve/add and there's like 40 things in that list. I will work on it sunday, so probably an update on monday.
I didn't take care of the modeling that much to get things done quickly, and my order of priority is:
1. Get the lighting right, still needs to be tweaked, mostly in comp. But what I already showed is a good preview.
2. Add chairs/people in front of the scene. Maybe just chairs, I dont have suitable footage for the peoples.
3. Improve the modeling and add small elements/details.
4. Animate the camera/sparks/lighting.
5. Comp something/someone that should take the place of the magician in the middle of the scene.
