View Full Version : Fur Color maps
jtvergarav 03-02-2009, 09:11 PM Hey
I was wondering how do they do in production to make an animal's fur color map.
I've been doing an squirrel fur.

I don't think you take a photo and just clone parts along the UV. So I painted the color the way I thought you do it, but I'm not sure I like it. The results are not as desired.
So I was wondering, how yo make a kind of complex fur map? lets say a lion or a tiger.
How do they do it in produciton??
THANKS!

1. Its in the wrong section.
2. It might help to show us what the rendered character looks like.

1. What is the right section? texturing? I don't really know, and I mean it.
2. It could, but that won't help in what I'm after.
3. Just asking, for the ones that have done or seen it, do you have or seen any color map of fur? i'm really curious about how one looks
THANKS!

well there are 2 ways..
1st:: just like u have done. make a color map.
2nd:: if u r using renderman, write renderman shader for a lion or tiger.

What you're doing is on the right track, don't worry. We do indeed make colour maps for fur. Actually, we often make numerous colour maps for a single animal - for variations within the fur. For example, you may make one main map for the overall basic colour, which can be derived heavily from photos of the animal, basically like what you've made here. Then additional maps may be created for, for example, a colour variation that's applied to the tips of the fur, or any other variation along the length of each shaft. Texture painters will generally work quite closely with the grooming artist to determine what textures will be needed.

for my squirrels I did a root and a tip fur map that then mixed with a gradient along the hairs themselves. I finally got permission to put back up the material I'd originally posted here, so I'm working on a write up of how I did the fur.

Thanks guys!
A job mate took the map and twiked it out. The squirrel is looking nice. I hope the ad is out the next week... what I'm not sure, but I'd like to, is to post it here. I'm not sure if I'm able to, I don't know those legal stuff. Do you?
