View Full Version : MiSSS & Mia material question
poorawaste 03-02-2009, 09:14 PM Hi
I'm trying to create a styrofoam cup with some liquid in it (see attached). I believe there wil be some color bleed from the liquid into the cup since light is passing through. How would I achieve this? The cup is misss_fast_simple shader and the liquid is a mia_material.
Also any other suggestion to improve the image are welcome.
thanks.

In order to get the color scattering/bleeding between the two you'll either need to use translucency, or set up scattering in the coffee with the same lightmap (or both).
So, the first way would be to set up a second coffee shader that's SSS using the same lightmap as your cup, without any diffuse or ambient, then pipe it through the additional color slot under advanced in your mia_material.
That said, it's really more of a translucency thing you're trying to achieve. I'd probably turn off the diffuse on your styrofoam SSS shader and pipe *its* output color as additional color over a new mia_material that's styrofoam and a little translucent.
Another upside to this is that with an mia_material on the cup, you'll get much nicer color bleed from the table... turn on a little more reflection (I prefer mia_reflection over sss speculars anyhow) and maybe have it at about .2 gloss? You could use the rubber preset and work backward from there.
Other than that, you're on the right track. The coffee itself looks great, and the styrofoam is pretty close to convincing already... the bump might be stretched a little too much vertically and I think it could use a little more spec/shininess, but it's definitely in the ballpark. Maybe try enabling ambient occlusion and tuning it for a nice contact shadow to ground the cup a little more?
Hope this helps,

thanks once again trey.
Here's where i ended up (see pic). i followed all the instructions, but i still can't get the color bleed. i also shared the light map with the new mia shaders that have the sss shader plugged in as additional color.
the cup now looks a little more translucent, but doesn't show the shadow or color bleed from the liquid.
Any thoughts?
