View Full Version : Anatomy Thread of nCarbon
nCarbon 03-01-2009, 08:17 PM Hi all! As this is my first post I thought I'd briefly introduce myself. My name is Brandon, and have been lurking here for years, I've always been a fan of CG art and have dabbled in drawing for most of my life. I'm currently seeking a degree in mechanical engineering, but have always fancied myself an artist and have drawn in my spare time.
Anyway, I am starting to take my drawing more seriously and feel that the critiques of this wonderful community will drive me to excell in ways that, until recently, I would not have known were possible. So I submit to you the first of what I hope will be regular anatomy studies. All work, unless noted otherwise is done in GIMP, using a Wacom. I am trying to teach myself Blender, so at some point you may see some 3d work as well.
Tell me what you think, what I'm doing right, and what needs work! All input, no matter how brutally honest, is greatly appreciated!

Hi Brandon.
Nice start on this!
The head is too big. it looks like you are painting this at a rather low resolution?
Also, it's recommended to do many many grayscale studies and slowly start doing color studies once you master values.
I would strongly advise to get 25$ and buy Artrage. GIMP sucks for painting. (It's brush engine is worthless if you ask me)
Best of luck and have fun :)

hi
i suppose you used a reference of characterdesigns.com (http://www.characterdesigns.com/bandaid/content/photosets/117/137/Figure_014_020.JPG)? (if not it would be a huge coincidence ... i practiced with the same picture once :) )
the shadows need some bluish/violet hues badly. it looks more like a plastic doll atm. it wouldnt hurt either to drop in some yellow/green to balance out the overall red.
and nr43 is right ... the head is too big.
keep going and have fun! thats all that counts.

Thanks for the replies guys! By the time I uploaded that one, the head was sticking out like a sore thumb, so I started focusing on heads! Mostly just gestures with a ballpoint in my sketchbook.
NR43:
I never know what resolution to use, I usualy go with an A4 at 300dpi.
Shapemaster:
Definately was using characterdesigns.com on that one. Light is still very confusing for me. I've been reading as much as I can, but I find it hard to find good info on the web. I think I'm going to take NR43's advice and stick to greyscale studies for now.
Well here are some pictures from my [physical] sketchbook:

Hi there, welcome. I think you have a good start, but the head is definitely too large at the moment, a very easy fix. Her thigh also seems to be about the same size as her waist, which can also be trimmed easily. Keep going!

I like the way you let your line loose and quick.

I really dig the Michelangelo study (http://fc39.deviantart.com/fs44/i/2009/098/3/1/Sketch003_by_nCarbon.jpg). These sketches show that you are really trying. Would you be able to take a figure drawing course? That will greatly accelerate your progress and you would really enjoy it.

Thank you for the encouraging words, Rebbecak. I may try to take a class or two during the summer.
Here are some 15 minute sketches I did today. I will try to do a few every day.
