first WIP. i'm basing it on a concept by Nathan Campbell. so no complaining it's not exactly like the image =) done using XSI 3.5. emailed him for permission to model it but still no reply. hopefully he won't mind. the concept can be found here:

he's got some great stuff on his site. it's like a goldmine of wonderful concepts. i hope i can do it justice.

i think your edges , that most people would say have a beveled look. i think there way tosmooth looking. i think they should have a sharpness to them. thats all, looks neat so far.

oh i definitely agree.. but since i'm still doing major work on some of the meshes i've kept it pretty light. i'll go back later and add sharpness. makes it easier to work with for now. i get carried away with it sometimes and i try to postpone it till later.

latest. i dont like the connecting things from the body to the fans so i'm probably redoing those or bulking them up and covering them up with stuff. bottom of the main body is unfinished as well.

threw in some hydraulic looking arms and moved one of the connection points. i think it looks better though not sure i'm satisfied with it yet.

thanks Matthew. :)

i changed the gun a bit and added a swivel in the back so it can tilt downards a bit. altered the barrells a bit as well. now i gotta figure out how to attach it to the main body and start working on the two engine mounted guns.

Nice work so far ;] Man I always like to see sketches! Do you got some? Or is it not your design?

'bout the gun: Is it right? The Bullets come into the guns body from bothboth sides? Where do the emty ones go?

hi,

i see tons of those renders. I asume u used Mental Ray? How do I get such a result. What lights do I have to add to the scene. Do u use Final Gathering?

Oh damn! :banghead: First read, then post! First read, then post! First read, then post! First read, then post! First read, then post!
I'm sorry, all quests answered... So: the gun Idea is of you guy, right? I mean.. it quite looks cool to put ammo-belts in both sides.. but ... eh you know ... :hmm:

Yeah but in the spinefinger design only one side of the gun is shown, so we stilld ont know if this double-loaded ammo thing is yours or the concept artists idea.. maybe you should take the bullets away from one side and only keep the shells, so that it looks like those bullets have been fired?

d8ed

yeah concept is by Nathan Campbell.. first post.. and since a 3 barrelled vulcan gun isnt practical i went with 6 instead. two belts of ammo are my idea really but i loosely based parts of the gun on another one of his concepts. this one here:

http://spinefinger.netfirms.com/Robots/Robots_07.htm

as far as where the shells go, there's a slot at the bottom that ejects them. now technically.. a vulcan gun doesnt use an ammo belt like this one.. it uses a squarish belt looking thing with the bullets hidden. i just thought this might look a little nicer. for the sake of not having this thing too symmetrical i am considering removing the bullets from one side and having them eject from there instead of the bottom. i'll play around with it and see what i get.

as far as the render is concerned.. you can do this with final gathering but it takes a while.. i used the Dirtmap shader.. it's an ambient occlusion shader that gives a similar effect. i have a few spots in there and the shader plugged into the diffuse on a lambert surface. renders very very fast. the shader is posted in the resources section on www.xsibase.com

Maybe you can put it this way: the ammo comes from both sides to avoid over-heating since the speed of this gun is extremely high?
Then spit the empty shells out at the bottom..

d8ed
07-10-2003, 08:59 PM
yeah.. that's how it is now! ;) those guns fire off an insane amount of ammo. technically at least.

gonna work on the way the guns attach to the engines. not sure if i'll keep the swivel or just make them fixed. any ideas on that area? are the guns too big? too small?

someone i met through XSI Base wants to animate this thing and composite it into some live action footage with some vfx. yay! it's almost ready for primetime. or a coat of paint.

added a bit more detail to the engines. i'm pretty much done with it at this point. now i just have to figure out how to texture it.

gave it a little more color and some decals. i think i might like the one without the motion blur better. what do you think?

great model man! you should add some more details like scratches and stuff in the textures!

I really like it, i also like the lighting in that pure white finished shot, and the one with a blueish tint. I think you should add more detail on the under side though, It seems a bit bare. Do you have any wireframe shots?

ewerybody
07-23-2003, 04:17 PM
Hey! Quite cool so far. Whatabout rendering another perspective?!? ok.. this way its the view like it is in the sketch, isn't it?

Yea, I think scratches and stuff whould boost it again a lil. The sketch also shows kinda used-style..

But... when I look at it a while.. seems a bit too smooth. There is quite a lack of hard edges. Some pieces should be more sharp. Don't you think?

d8ed
07-23-2003, 07:52 PM
@Zero_Gunner: yeah i like that lighting/texturing style as well. shows the model much better i think.

@ewerybody: it's a flying machine thingie.. i got the edges about as hard as they're gonna get at this point. i try to get them soft enough to pick up the right speculars. plus this model's getting heavy! ;) i'll bust out a few other perspectives for ya and a wireframe in a bit. though the wireframe might hurt your eyes.

and as far as the scratches.. you're trying to make my life hell aren't you?? ;) i managed to dirty up this thing and it's cracks without using a single texture. to make you happy.. i think i'll scratch up the lettering instead. make it more weathered.

thanks for all the comments so far by the way. i'll have some different angles in a bit.

here's a wire. i'm rendering a spin animation for my reel. gotta get it done by the weekend for Siggraph! i'll post it here when i'm done.

here's a little something i worked on today. trying a couple of different angles for the front jet. will post some others later. i made the background in Lightwave and used Photoshop for the motion blur and some overall tinting. does the back jet look ok like that? i turned down contrast and brightness a bit.

Looks good. Are you planning to texture the model? It looks a bit monotome. Have you tried it with some bright colors or something...Just a suggestion.

The modelling looks really good, but it doesn't look textured enough...

d8ed
09-15-2003, 12:16 AM
when you ask am I planning to texture the model.. what exactly do you mean by that? i thought i had textured it.. ;) then again i consider myself more modeler than texturer.. so that might be it ;)

as far as bright colors.. i wanted to keep this thing military-like and a bright red or yellow or blue or whatever wouldn't really fit that role. now if i were racing these babies around a racetrack or a tunnel.. that's a whole new story.

i was considering doing a shooting type of animation or still but i'm still researching the gunfire in XSI. i'm new to particles and it's takin me a while to get it figured out. maybe in the near future.
