View Full Version : How would you mode this guy?
Zarnik 03-01-2009, 02:00 AM I wonder if some of the modelling veterans could take a look at this video. I'm trying to model this character. The one to the left.

But since I can only model him from one angle I need some modeling tips from you. I uploaded this video on how I modeled him. Please have a look and tell me if you would do it in the same way. It's 13 min long, but don't worry added some nice music in the background.

And it's supposed to be low poly...I'm using blender. It's just like any other software. So if you use something else it doesn't matter I just need some tips on how to model from one view only....thanks a lot.

u were doing good. i dont understand why u stopped.
anyway, i strongly recomend u to model in 3dimensions instead of just 1flat plane then extruding the mesh forward. it will be hard to get a good volume that way

I stopped because when it came to shape the thing I was lost. It just doesn't look good. And I'm not sure why, I have tried before to keep going and this was the result >_>

So I wonder if maybe someone else would like to try model him. And give me some quick instructions on how they did it. Because every time I try to model him it turns out bad very bad. And that is probably because I have never really followed a one view only reference. So yeah I would really appreciate your help.

Ok sorry for double posting. I just want your attention on this one. And keep in mind I'm fairly new to modeling. Well here is the result, the reason I couldn't do this before was because I didn't have a side view of the character. I edited the original character sheet like this. And added the sideview.
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/116/055t.th.bmp (http://img14.imageshack.us/my.php?image=055t.bmp)
Now it is much easier and this is the result.

798 quads
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/1897/nybitmappsbild2.th.bmp (http://img22.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nybitmappsbild2.bmp)
As you can see I just used the textures from the character sheet. Looks crap I know, I will have to make my own. So here comes my next question, is there anything I should change in the model? And where do I go from here? Btw I'm going to use this for a game so it's supposed to be low poly...
Thanks!

not sure about games polycount, but looks pretty low res for me. it might work

Ok so the model is done then, now the texture. I have unwrapped the model, but I have never done texture work before. I would like it to look like the character sheet. But I'm afraid my skills in GIMP are very poor. Does anybody know of a place where you can request textures from artist? :D Maybe I should make a new topic somewhere else now when the modeling is done?

Not bad at all.
You should pay attention to areas of deformation, shoulder, knee, elbow and crotch all need edges to lock in the volume as the joint bends, this tutorial is a good exemple:
http://www.pig-brain.com/tut02/tut02_01.htm
You are wasting some space on that UV layout, try to fill in the empty spaces as much as you can, also it feels like there's some stretching going on. Ben Mathis has some video tutorials on creating low poly characters and covers UV layout:
His tutorials:

UV layout:

For texture painting you should give this approach a try:

Thanks for the tutorials those will help for sure. Here is the current version of the character, there is some texture errors that needs to get fixed and the guy is missing a tail and some hair + shading of the face of course. But when that is finished I think it's time to rig him.
Psyk0: I don't need to deform the elbows and knees right, because he is wearing clothes and those are allowed to be stretched. Am I right :p

Well as long as you have something to keep the volume when it bends, or else it'll look like a straw bent on itself...

Thanks a lot, that image really helped me. That is one useful image, you should have it in the banner :p Here is the current model...+ his weapon.

Thanks really gives you spirit :D
Now I need to animate some animations for him, I have already rigged him. But I'm really bad at animation. So maybe someone would like to help me do it? These are the animations I need:
*Stand animation
*Walk animation
*Attack animation
If someone wants to do this, add me to msn. Dante--91@hotmail.com
I'm not sure if you can use some other software than blender to animate, I don't know how to take animations from other apps. But I think there is some way...thanks.
