Is it possibe to move a vertex along an angled edge so that it doesnt affect the edge shape. Kinda hard to explain

Example
If you move a vertex along a edge but the edge is on either the xyz plain then it doesnt affect the shape of the edge. But if the edge for example is on a 45 degree angle is there away to lock the vertex to the edge and move it along it.

The pic below shows what i mean. I want the vertex down closer to the bottom and im trying to move it without affecting the edges 45 degree angle. Sure i could create a vertex lower or i could move it and adjust it until i looks right but thats not what i want to do here.

If you're using Max5 and Editable Poly, then there's a "constrain to" option on the EPoly panel with edge and face options. If you're in Max 4.x or lower, then I'm afraid not:(

You can use a 'dummy' object aligned along the desired axis of the geomtry to control how the verts move.
I have attached an image ( quality is really bad though...I don't know how people post up large images on this site without them looking terrible....20k seems a tad small..anyway..)
1. This shows the axis that the verts would use under normal conditions
2. Make and align your 'dummy' geomtry so that its local axis is where you want it to be
3. Use the 'pick' optin in the axis pull down, and select the dummy object before you start moving anything.
Now you can move, scale or rotate the verts along the object.
It's quite a useful little trick, and you don't have to worry about snapping or constraing to edges or anything.
( again, sorry about the quality of the image..hope you can see it OK )
