im the beginner of the MAX.
i have some puzzledom in both extrude and boolean.
sometimes, the same basic graphics get the different result by extruding.look below :

in the top post ,the basic graphics are both lines.

something about boolean puzzled me:

i have three object:A.B.C
A-B (D)works normally in boolean,but when i minus c with D,D never reduce!what's the reason?

im the beginner of MAX,please donot laugh at me!thanks a lot!

Shapes that have no top (=cap) often are made from a spline that is not closed. Since the spline is not closed, Max doesn't know where to put the top!

Look at the spline in vertex mode, and see if you can spot 2 vertices with a box around them (two first vertices would indicate 2 shapes).
Or, take a closer look at each vertex and see if it actually is 1 vertex.

If not, weld them together, and your problem should be solved.

Some shapes with a lot of holes have the same problem, added vertexes with refine at certain places may help.

Booleans are unpredictable alltogether, avoid them like the plague!

i think i understand it.

whether your last sentence means boolean
is uncontrolled sometimes?

The first step you create a boolean object C

To do another boolean you have to press the boolean button again, else it won't work.

What I do most of the time is collapsing the object before I do another boolean. (Go to the modify tab, click second mouse button in the stack and choose 'collapse to editable mesh)

What I mean with the boolean being uncontrollable is that sometimes it works, but other times it doesn't work at all (even with simple objects). With the new versions of Max it's a bit better, but with the older versions boolean was hell!

Also, boolean doesn't give very clean results, it generates a lot of faces where they don't belong.

I do it follow your way:1.press the boolean button again.
2.collapse to editable mesh.
it still not work!the boolean is hell,i agree with you!
but,i really want to make clear about boolean.
my model is 190kb,if you allowed,i'll send the file to your mail
you can try to Rectangle5-Rectangle3 with boolean.perhaps you
will find the problem in my model.

if you want, please tell me your mail dress.

thanks again for your patient!:p

I've put my email adress in a message I've send you, check your personal messages, it should be there.

Bring it on! :)

can nurbes sglines extrude with a top?

Yes, NURBS can extrude with a top, but NURBS aren't very usefull in MAX either, because they tend to slow your computer down (a lot!).

Stick with splines, they can do everything you need.

i plan to learn more 3d software.
i believe nurbes will work better in other software, such as maya!
