View Full Version : Failed Boolean Operation
Kaiser_Sose 07-04-2003, 02:09 AM In the manual it says - Failed Boolean operations
Occasionally Boolean operations may fail for topological reasons. The following error message displays:
Cannot perform boolean operations for topological reasons.
If this happens, the objects that were selected before performing the (failed) operation become invisible. To return to the original state, undo the last Boolean operation - and that is exactly what I am getting but it does not say how to fix it. I am still getting used to maya
I think I am getting it because I deleted the faces of the truck along the x axis for mirror instancing the other half, idid not think I needed them when I mirrored it
I need to use boolean because I want to make a inner hole for some screws
Anyone have any suggestions
Thanks

Make sure all your normals are facing the same direction before attempting a boolean , thats mainly the reason the model disappears.
than again , booleans suck so its best to avoid them :)

How do you do that when you have faces going in many different directions

by the same direction, he means either pointing inwards or outwards, not a specific vector.
You can see which way your normals are facing by selecting the object you wish to display normals on, then go to Display -> Polygon Components -> Normals

then go to edit polygons>normals>conform.

yes, I know
then go to edit polygons>normals>conform.
This does not help
I dont know any other way to get all those screw rivets in place so easily

why whats still happening?
normals>conform, should face all your normals in same direction.

Hi,
the objects that were selected before performing the (failed) operation become invisible
There goes the detail I wanted to put in
Thanks

hi kaiser,
why do you need holes for your screws anyway? if they're screwed in we won't see the holes...

All all the edges merged in the two halves you were mirroring?
Booleans will only work if th esurface is water tight meaning that there can't be any holes or unmerged edges in the surface.

perform a polygons -> cleanup and make sure you have non-manifold geometry checked. you probably have 3 faces sharing the same edge somewhere which is a no-no. find the face after the cleanup and delete it then remerge all the vertices and reperform the boolean. if no area of the mesh becomes selected after the cleanup then go ahead and just try and do the boolean operation again.
