Hi all, this is the first time I participate on one of these mini challenges and most likely won't finish on time due to my job but I'll give it my best shot.

I'll be making the Lion Voltron in robot mode. I have gathered some reference and will post that sometime tonight. Happy modeling! ;)

Go, Snows, go!
I know you got the skills .......

Good luck Snows. You've certainly got the experience for Voltron.

angel

thx for the encouragement!

here is a few ref images... I'll be doing a lot of improvising here as I model since the best images are from comic books. I'll be using the far top right and far top left as my main references. Time to get this started.

Hey guys, I'm not gonna make the lions separately, I'll make Voltron as a whole, maybe I can finish on time by doing it that way.

Here is what I have so far... not much but at least its under way.

made the hips and upper legs, tweaked some of the chest proportions. Now it is time to "form feet and legs!" lol, sry, couldn't resist.

angel
03-05-2009, 03:51 AM
I know I said I was gonna start modeling the legs but I just felt like getting the face started... the face was more challenging than I thought it would be... I started over twice and deleted big chunks until I was happy with the direction. I need to fix some kinks and small bulges on the cheek (you can see it on the far right image).

As always comments are welcomed.

Head looks great! But I feel like the face might be too feminine? I'm not sure, can't find good enough views of Voltron's face. Maybe you should double check the corners of the eyes to make sure. Otherwise good luck! It's coming along nicely!

angel
03-06-2009, 02:08 PM
Yeah, that was what I was thinking, although in the cartoon it seems a little feminine but that's just MHO. Let see what it looks like once I make the black lion's head and I'll make adjustments. thanks for the crit:thumbsup:

WyattHarris
03-06-2009, 05:29 PM
I think its the lips, too soft. But your right, Voltron definitely has a feminine look in his face.

angel
03-07-2009, 06:37 PM
ok, here I tweaked the eyes, the top edge is more straight now I also tweaked the lips a little as Wyatt suggested.

Great work on the model so far :) I used to love watching this show. I'm interested to see what proportions you'll be doing the arms in relationship with the legs - Voltron always seemed to have puny arms compared to it's huge legs :p

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments guys

I worked on the black lion's head... without orthos this is definitely taking a long time.

Let's see how the arms turn out, the leg lions are indeed larger than the arm lions and keeping everything proportional is an issue.

Your voltron makes me want to call up my folks and get them to rummage through my old boxes of toys and send 'em to me!

He still looks feminine, though. Perhaps bring the cheek bones out a little. It might not match your reference, but if it gives you the look you want then that's the important part.

@ Wyatt, thx! I put this show in my Netflix cue, my son is gonna love it!:D
@ japetus thx buddy!
@ Rage I know what you mean... better get in touch with your folks before they give it all away... mine did, original star wars toys, transformers, oh boy I think I'm gonna pass out again... anyway, if I have time I'll revisit the face and tweak it more, there are still 4 lions and a sword to make ;)

I wasn't able to do much tonight, made the neck and fitted the head to the torso to see how it was jiving.

after a couple of days I finally was able to get a couple of hrs to work on this guy. Here is the body of the Yellow Lion. next the head. I think I'll be able to pose the legs and arms lions separately, the black lion will not work due to the wacky proportions in robot mode...

Why the application that had subdivision surfaces and its workflow since 1995:

LIGHTWAVE

When all other apps thought that splines was the future.

angel
03-13-2009, 02:14 PM
HA! I'm indeed modeling in Lightwave, but I'm also using Maya, I will UV unwrap, texture, light and render in Maya although rendering in LW is not out of the question.

Each one has its pro's and con's. I'm just a faster modeler in LW ;)

It´s really cool that you´ve done the lions in animal pose before attaching them to voltron!
Would be awesome to see an animation of the transformation :P

Just got Voltron from the library and my son saw it for the first time. It took 10 sec and he was hooked. I acted out the blazing sword animation and he said, "This is better Dad" and he did the part after Voltron forms and all the lion heads roar at the screen. "This is way cooler than Power Rangers!" "It sure is son, it sure is." :D

I'm really excited to see that the lion modeled and done forms the leg without any tweaking. The cartoon always took liberties to fit them together tightly but it looks like they didn't need much. Except the black lion, as you say, of course.

Really looking good Snows.

Love the fact that you are doing all the technical modelling (hard surface) in subD's, man after my own heart!

Out of interest why do you choose this method?

The ability to zoom into any area and up-res? (that's my reason for doing it)

*edit*

Sheeet, I just realised your latest post is the leg! Good going so far and hope you get finished in time!

Geta-Ve
03-17-2009, 03:39 AM
Looking fantastic, though from the angle of the latest pic it looks as if his front legs don't tuck in quite properly?

I just remembered that a japanese friend of mine had given me the yellow tiger/leg a long time ago and for the longest time I was under the assumption that it was the yellow power rangers tiger... :D

Good times. and superb modeling!

angel
03-17-2009, 05:32 AM
@ vshen, it has crossed my mind but not a complete robeast maybe one cut in half showing all of the mechanical guts as Voltron cuts it with the sword, that would be cool!:D but I don't think I'll have the time to take it that far.

@SteveTsang, japetus, thx guys!

@Wyatt, that's awesome! I can not wait to get it and watch it with my son, although he is into SW and the Clone Wars so he might not be too impressed with Voltron, either way, I'm looking forward to that :)

@energise :thumbsup:

@samartin, yeah pretty much the same, for things that will end up as hi-res renders I usually model in this fashion, gives me the freedom to choose what to be hi res and what could be less, specially when I don't have a composition thought out.

@Geta-Ve, I know what you mean, in the cartoon, like Wyatt mentioned they took plenty of "liberties" to make everything fit, they would get rid of most of the legs, they would just vanish! LOL so what I decided to do was come up with a mixture of the 2, cartoon and toys. The Lion legs are based more on the action figure and the front legs basically become the heel of the foot. There is always room for improvement tho; I can revisit that after all the limbs are modeled.

Thanks for the coments and feedback guys! Keep 'em coming.

RageOfAges
03-17-2009, 06:48 AM
looks like there's some clipping with the front legs and the body of the lion (in leg form).

Looking sweet Snows. Green Lion was always more distinctive to me, stood out more in my head for some reason.

You've probably seen this in the reference but just remember on Voltron that green lion is turned to the left and red lion is straight ahead.

Good job on the voltron progress so far. It brings so much childhood memories because it's probably my fave cartoon of all time. Will you be texturing the model for your final presentation?

angel
03-24-2009, 02:46 PM
@ Wyatt, yes the Green one kinda stands out and I think its because of its round shape, the other ones are square.

@ vshen, thx! due to my job I don't think I'll have the time to texture it as well but I will be definitely be texturing and lighting it afterward and perhaps make an illustration... I've been thinking on cool heroic poses lately.

angel
03-26-2009, 08:20 PM
thanks guys!

you know I didn't remember that it was a blowtorch! I just went with a mix from the reference I have. Does anybody happen to know what (if any) weapon does Red uses (besides the sword)? I was gonna use the same type of deal for Red's mouth but it might be different in the cartoon, is it unique?. Since Red will be holding the sword I might be able to get away using the same geo as green.

WyattHarris

Red and Green both have blowtorches in the mouth. But then they also fire missiles and lasers etc etc.

Looking great Snows. I checked your references at the beginning and then double checked the DVDs and I can only assume the red and green lions twist at the middle joint. When Voltron forms the mouths are facing like you have them. When he forms blazing sword both mouths are twisted to face the same direction. But then the sword can be wielded in any normal wrist direction. So yeah, I guess red and green twist in the middle.

I know, a bit over-analyzed but I never paid attention to it until you started modeling it. :D

yeah MR has its share of issues... all I did was set a subd approximation node and applied it to every mesh, it works on everything bu the head... at rendering it is invisible, checked the usual stuff, render flags in the shape node, also re-saved, re imported (that sometimes fixes weird things) etc... I ended up just using smooth. I just wish smooth had a display value and a render value separately. If you happen to run into this and find the solution LMK, I'll do the same.

In the meantime here is what I came up for a pose, I'm thinking to use this pose for a hires illustration and a turntable for the challenge. What do you guys think?

As for mental ray... GRRR! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
... that's why I got sidetracked there for a bit, and started working on the tomb instead of texturing. I have an issue where mental ray wants to facet everything, even with normal maps, and smoothed vertex normals, etc etc. As nub as I am with rendering, you'd think I could get it right at least once, but I run into an issue with mental ray every time. :D

Anyway, awesome work man. :buttrock:

angel

hummm... ok, the pose is a bit tame. I want to make the Lions the star of the image not the sword but I do agree it is important. The problem with this model is the limited movement I have to work with, specially the legs, very hard to get a good aggressive pose but I'll try again and see what I come up with. Let me look into the TF Armada stuff, thanks guys!.

Oberyn, the most common MR problem I run into all the time is the out of memory issue, I know it goes away in W64 with plenty of RAM but for now I'm stuck with XP32 and 3 Gigs of RAM so what I do to solve the problem is render separate elements which I usually do anyways, and regions for large images.

Yeah i hate it when the rendering dies at 90%! =P There is one way to kinda solve the problem though.. in the "batch render oprions" you can type in the memory limit MR will use for rendering. If you have 3gigs of ram try typing in 1,5gig or so.. (taking in account that windows etc drain lots of memory) then the rendering will take longer but be more stable!

I don't know if you've tried any of these.

*delete history
*re-import the head geometry
*if you saved your scene as .mb, try saving it as .ma then reloading. Or vise-versa.
*import your scene rather than opening it. Try in both .ma/.mb formats. (I used maya when I was at school, and whenever I had MR issues, my teacher recomended I do this. It resloved the issue 95% of the time).

That's all I got (I haven't used Maya since version 7, so its been a while). Good luck and I hope you get it resolved soon.

Thanks guys for the comments

Wyatt, I played with the classic, blazing sword pose and it just wasn't working for me... looked ugly. After you posted I gave it another try and got better results, however for a turn table it wouldn't work... I "cheated" to make it work and it would show in the turn table. Maybe I can use the other pose for the turntable.

Here it is

Lol I didn`t have time to post here this morning while my night shift was ending, but I was gonna suggest nearly that exact pose!!

But now that I see it I too am not sold on it. I think you have a great start on it. Perhaps just playing with the focal length of your camera you can get something you like.

Yeah, I guess in a turntable it would look much less epic. Still, that looks freakin' awesome to me. :D

Blazing Sword is looking good, keep up the great work.

thx jhasse!

Hey I got it fixed!
It didn't occurred to me last night to check for non-manifold geo... just ran mesh>cleanup>nonmanifold geometry. Problem fixed ;)

WOOOHOOO =P happy for ya!

hey guys, thanks you for all the comments and support!

It seems like you guys really like the classic pose. One of the reasons I'm questioning this pose is mainly because I don't really know what else to do with it, the space background is boring to me. For the other pose I was thinking to make a small dirt crater around the feet, with rocks and mountains on the background with some fiery debris falling from the sky...

Anyway here is an AO render of the classic pose :)

Well then, that just means that you have to model/render the castle in the background. No problem right. :D

the only thing i will say...

"defender of the universe"

If this is a rigged character then do both poses, and then compare.
There is no color, no shading information ( yet ) and you cant posible know if you are going to like it or not.

well, I guess I can always render them both:D

here is an AO render other one that shows off the model better. Unfortunately I'll be unable to texture it ontime for the challenge, so clay renders will have to do, good thing this is a modeling challenge, right? ;)

Oh man sweeeet! :buttrock: You've inspired me to complete my Ace McCloud. I bet you could apply some simple polygonal coloring to the parts right? But he looks awesome the way he is now. Great work!!

Thx guys!
I think I'm almost done... just need to add the geo for the knee that was messing up. Then its time to render the images for final submission.

Here is a quick test render using Maya's Physical sky. Didn't tweak the values much at all, just lowered the horizon line. Everything else pretty much default.

Lookin' great! :D Only two wingy thingies on the back looked weird to me, I did a quick google search, they are looking a bit thin, the edges should be rounder and have little bit more mass.

Great work, pal!

yep, I was unable to texture it but I was able to render a turntable and will render the orthos sometime today or tomorrow. I think I can make it... I hope so. ;)

Like the camera work here, shows the scale very well without using any other props. Congrats and a great amount of patience/skill shown here :)

*edit*

How come you used Maya for rendering? Due to the rigging? Very clean and nice render all the same.

@samartin- I was telling a friend that when I make giant robots I like to place the camera down near the floor, I think it puts the viewer right in the scene and thus giving a great sense of scale. As far as rendering goes... I'm rendering at work in a dual quad core... a hell of a lot faster than my antique at home and at work we have Maya. This scene takes like 17 seconds to render with 2 FG bounces at half res (1275 x 1800).;)
