View Full Version : HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Calvin & Hobbes
JuGGerNauTT 02-27-2009, 05:44 PM Hello guys, I thought of trying out this challenge, should be great fun !!! :)
My idea is to pay a very small tribute to the man responsible for many of my favorite childhood memories, Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin & Hobbes.

These comic strip characters got published at 18th of November 1985. Hopefully they qualify for this challenge Roberto?
So after some thought I came up with an idea of a bedroom scene. Hobbes pounces (as he usually does), over Calvin's.... dad, who this time around..... can "see" him and gets super scared!! From the power of his spring, Hobbes flips the bed off balance enough to wake Calvin and "stuffed Hobbes".
I made a pencil concept of what I had in mind (it did not involve the bed flip.... thought about it later that it will add something), please feel free to comment, all help is very much appreciated.
I'm going to put as much detail to the final sculpt as possible while trying to maintain the character's authenticity. Good luck to everybody !!!

Yay, two of the coolsest characters of all time!
Not sure if they qualifiy though, unless there actually was an animated cartoon of them.
Cheers!

Yeah I'm eagerly waiting for master Ortiz to reply to me on this....oh god... I do hope they qualify....it's a shame really because Watterson's strip was more like a key animator's work, than a comic book artist.... but due to his non-merchandising policy, never got into a series.
I think it would have rocked having Calvin & Hobbes as a tv-series with Bill's script and supervision, kids would grow so much different, so much more mature.
Anyway I shall post an update if things go well soon. Good luck to you too RazorsEdge, you entering this as well?
cheers

I remade the concept guys, I would love your opinion on it....Also if this was a real sculpture could it physically be possible to construct? I tried to keep that in mind when I designed the scene but I don;t know much about sculpture, so I hope my imagination is right! :arteest:
Please give me your thoughts on it. Still haven't got a reply if this qualifies from mr Ortiz.... fingers cross it will be ok. :bounce:

Calvin and Hobbes!!! Greatest comic strip of all time! (Along with "The Far Side".)
I would also have loved to have seen a cartoon with these two, but Bill had a very specific reason why he didn't allow one to be made. He said that when you read those strips, you hear a voice in your head for Calvin, Hobbes, the mother and father, and Susie. And everyone hears a different voice. He didn't want to replace your own inner voice with a voice chosen by someone else. Because then that would be the voice that you, and everyone else, would hear every time you went back and read one of the strips. He wanted to keep it personal. Look at Garfield. Every time I read one of those now, I hear the voice that was used in the animated specials done during the eighties. I don't even remember the voice that I heard in my own head when I first read them.
Anyway, I'm hoping Roberto approves this one. I would love to see these guys in 3D! Regarding the concept. I like it, but, IMHO, your going to have to lose the Hobbes doll on the bed. Unless in your world there are two Hobbes. (Which would be awesome!)

What you said about the inner voice was so true miden1238. It is something I never realised as a kid but I understand Bill's point and I respect him even more for that. I didn't know this until today. Thanks!!! :)
there are two Hobbes, the one that Calvin sees and the one everyone else sees.as we all know...but I was always a bit dissapointed that nobody else could see "real" Hobbes.
So I thought I'd give Calvin's dad a dose of "reality" ..... and the viewer that would see the scene I depict, the truth ... that stuffed Hobbes and real hobbes exist in the same universe, but takes a kids heart to see them both :)
Still waiting for the ok..:D

You can do it,
BUT
it is not legible for voting...
BUT
If you finish the entry I will spotlight it.

Sorry Roberto I just saw your reply on the FAQ thread I posted. I realize you plan a future challenge for comic strip characters, that's why it's not eligible for voting, but all ok, eitherway I'm doing this to get better. :)
Should I post this WIP thread somewhere else then? or is it ok to leave it here? Because I do want to meet the deadline..
Thanks again
