View Full Version : GI is useless in mental ray ?
iloveuue 02-26-2009, 11:53 PM well, VRAY GI has a better effect than Mental Ray GI .
So ,I usually don't use GI to render scenes when I use Mental Ray.
Final gather + skylight will have a good effect.
sometimes I rendered a AO pass , and then compose them in photoshop,
there will be a better effect.
And in some scenes , Add the number of FG diffuse bounces also can get a better effect.
So , I wonder that is there any uses of Mental Ray GI ?

Well, initially GI's main goal is get "color bleeding" effect, using photons.even though it's rather expensive to render it,it actually gives physically "right" and precise results (if data used was physically right either). But if you can't and don't need that precision, you can easily fake this effect using colored light sources in certain areas, wich will also give acceptable results. And as far as i know FG and AO themselves were initially developed as subsidiary tools,to work in conjuction with GI.No doubt, altogether these tools give natural and plausible results.

Yeah, I have understood the use of GI in Mental ray. And practiced in some scenes.
I think the GI is very important for VRAY , but not for Mental ray.
This image was used mental ray GI, and got a good quality.

I don't quite understand what problems you've got with GI in mental ray. With its new portal lights Gi in interiors became so much smoother. GI in Vray in last versions became amazingly smooth. The question is what you want from the renderer. Mental ray has many features vray has not, but it depends if you care about additional possibilities in MR which you may not need at all. And using AO in mental ray +Gi, I often don't see the point frankly speaking: those darkened corners look not very convincing.
For stills, I see no reason not to use GI in mental ray. For animations it's a different thing.

I much prefer MR GI methods over Vray.
