having found out that Shave won't help me with my hedgehog quills:rolleyes: , I'm looking at Surface Painter (Paul Everett's plugin for painting objects onto a surface). I looked in his pdf but didn't find an answer to this question: can I move the individual painted objects around after "spraying" to fine tune their placement?

thanks

edit: sheesh, there it was on the last page of the pdf. You can move individual objects around.

off to buy (oh plastic, how I love thee)

SP is a good plugin for sure. You may want to try Hair dept. HD can place (and animate) splines all over a surface. You can then use Solid Spline Pro to give quill-like form to the splines. Unfrotunately the site seems to be down:

http://www.bgs-group.de/

Also Remotion has ditools and there is a plugin in the toolset called splinegen (dicloner could also clone your quills on a surface) that (I believe) has a similar function. Both plugs are free. (SSPro is not)

Heres an example I did a while back using
HD. I chose to use a lesser amount of "quills' spaced over a greater distance and at a shorter length then you would want.

Hopefully HD is still available for download.

Hi Joel,
I have Solid Spline (and Hair Dept, too IIRC, tho' I've never used it), but I messed with SSPro and I don't think the caps can be filletted/rounded, can they? I want a soft nubbed look for the quills (he's a friendly little hedgehog :) )

Well, I've wanted Surface Painter for a while now. I know I'll find lotsa uses.

Hey, since you've used all this stuff, maybe you can help me if I have a question or two;)

edit: you do the absolutely creepiest looking stuff... and you do it so well :)

:)

In Solid Spline there is a hair option that lets you taper your hairs, but your right, they arent rounded, they are kind of needle like.

Feel free to ask me or post here if you have any questions. Cant promise anything but will share whatever info I do have.

What?!

Youd actually consider NUTRITION over an hour with a new plugin?

I suppose our one of those people that actually leaves the office to breath that so-called "fresh air" and interact with other humans.

(edited because I'm a moron and kant spelle)

also try Ditools DiSplineGen, this will generate splines all over an objects surface based on the vertex points (so subdivide it and curmple it for an odd offset) and you can use textures in there to control length etc.

brucie...did i miss something...can't you use instancing in shave?

Why couldn't you use the spline hair feature in Shave instead of instancing? Seems to me this would be a perfect application--unless the hairs have to be *really* detailed.

@Adam, well they have to be a very particular shape (esp. NOT pointy) and I was a little worried (tho' I was putting this worry off 'til after I solved the texture thing) about getting the placement I want... but maybe I'll try it as an experiment and see how it goes.

@Joel LOL! about the only life I have outside this little hot room is when I rush outside to pull a hanging plant back from the brink of dehydration. But it's my choice, right?

@flingster DOH! :)

@mdme_sadie I'll have to experiment with that too. I've played just a little with DiTools, but it's so complicated that I stop pretty quickly. Sometimes I think we should do what the Strata people used to do: get together someplace beautiful once a year and trade techniques for a long weekend... oh and have a beer too. I think they used to bring along whatever instruments they played and have jam sessions too. Hmm that sounds pretty good to me. Especially after the sad news about Dan Davis, it sort of makes me want to do some fun stuff with the people here...

i've been messing with splinegen...but can see me splines on render...i can see them in the editor...what am i doing wrong.
i tried both methods in reference pdf.
splingen
>object

or
sweepnurb
>circle
>>splinegen
>>>object

don't suppose someone has something really simple i can look at that works...as there is no example file for splinegen...only the others....i suppose they thought it was so easy only an idiot could mess it up...well i guess i'm the idiot tonight...sorry guys...thanks for the patience..:scream:

I'd be up for that Brucie. Like the Red Rocks Strata thing that they still do after all these years. Where could we meet?

Perhaps NYC somewhere in the Village. or DC--somewhere on the east Coast USA?

A lot of us are either on the East Coast or UK. I'm in Pennsylvania, Adams in FLorida, your in upstae NY, MV is in NYC.

Or we could go to the UK--never been there.

your splinegen shouldn't be a child of the circle, or any other spline object. remember it is a spline object itself, and the sweepnurbs works by having two or more splines put into it thus

sweepnurbs
>circle
>splinegen

or whatever splines you want in there, splines do not render normally (though ditools 1.0 will be able to render splines through a post effect).

Sounds like fun! My family's in the DC area so that would be easy for me.

That would work for me.

Of course, if we were smart, we'd all meet in SanDiego for Siggraph. A Lot of C4d-ers will be there. And we could go to Sea World.

I just bought a new bass guitar.

(says Joel, continuing to ignore the original intent of the thread)

If we kept with the 'someplace beautiful" thing, maybe urban isnt the way to go--though there are always electrical outlets to be found in the city. We could call it "C4d: Render in the Woods, 2003."

Or "Laptops and Logs"

Should we start a new thread?: The 1st Annual CGTalkC4DMeet/Fall 2004

(we'd need some time to plan for the birth of this little monster :) )

edit: oops, sorry Joel, just noticed you proprosed a name... Render in the Woods is good

DC or near DC might be nice in the spring or fall (not too hot). I could Amtrak there (a plus, as I don't love flying)

We could alternate US coasts if there's interest enough west of the mississippi

I think that would be a good idea. Maybe the mods could make it a sticky thread?

Too bad Siggraph is so close. That would be a perfect setting, but I'm afraid there wouldn't be time for everyone to plan around it on such short notice. Well actually I couldn't make it on such short notice. But for the *second* annual Render in the Woods.... :)
