View Full Version : WIP: Futuristic Dark Alley
Hi, I'm going to put a painting on the main page of my website. The painting shows a man standing at the middle of a futuristic dark and wet alley, looking behind to the camera.
I used to be a 3d artist more than an illustrator. And this is my first WIP for a 2D stuff. So please let the comments and critz coming.
I drew several pictures, Until the picture below caught my eyes and I continued adding B&W values in photoshop. But I came to realize that, this man has over swollen muscles and is so puffy. So I attempted for a more accurate figure and the second picture is the result. I feel happy with that and rightnow i'm working on it.
updates will come soon.

that's too bad that u got rid of the previous version since its design is far better, and the man's caricatural arms adds something intresting in the pic ;) I do prefer the 1st mask too cause it fits better with character design
@mosoul: Thanks, Well to be honest I really prefer the second one. cause it's more realistic. and about the gas mask cover on his mouth, I think I'll add it.
I'm thinking how should I add the color layer to the B&W layer. what's the best technique? If you guys have any idea or experience i'll appreciate if you share it with me.
and a quick update:

I have to say i prefer the second one for the same reasons, a lot more realistic. May I ask why the hands are in such an awkward pose?
@SatiricSquirrel: Thanks for the comment. I wanted the hands look extremely stretched. Maybe I should reconsider that.... .
And this is the environment, I'm not very satisfied with that, but it's much better than the previous 2 sketches that I made. take a look:

Hey, looking good! Maybe do take another look at the hands.. their pose does look a little unnatural. As for your question about addition of the colour, I would suggest using a method described in this awesome tutorial by Steven Stahlberg:
http://www.androidblues.com/JealousyStepbystep/jealousystep.html
I am using it for adding colour to my WIP and I am really satisfied with results. I am a newbie when it comest to painting in photoshop tho, so there may be other methods that are better.. Hope this helps a bit! Would love to see how this progresses!
@rainbowdemon: Thanks so much for the tutorial. it's definitely useful. :)
and this is the last update for today. simply I dont like it and I'll draw another one :D

I made some concepts and some drawings to figure out exactly what I'm trying to do. I think the result is satisfactory. I drew an accurate line-based sketch to define the boundaries of the objects and buildings. I''m going to put light values on this sketch and continue the projects. there are some concept pics also. You donts see any flying machines in the environment sketch like I made in concept sketches, because I'm going to draw them seperatly and put them in the scene.

All done by traditional medium: charcoal, marker, pencil.
Now it's time to fire up Photoshop and complete this painting. :)

like the alley. signs and things look cool
Thanks Joseph.
The hands are in currect position, I modified the mask to make it look like a gas mask and I worked on the details of foregorund of the scene.
guys what's your opinion?

lol, yea. cyberpunk themes like these are somehow similar. Multiculturalism, dark streets, night clubs, patrol robots and... .
Thanks for your comment. :)

I worked on background and I added some mist. I think I need a little more denser mist. Guys What do you think about the lighting, dark and light values? Did I miss somethink? Cause I think it's not very perspectively correct!
This is a conceptart from the game "dreamfall". I have something like this in my mind. a dark to light shading that represent perspective and background and foreground correctly.
http://files.visionfall.com/pics/20mar2009_02.jpg
but one problem is that this looks to be daytime. I want night and i want the viewer hold his/her breath and says " this is a God damn rainy night". This is another picture that represent a rainy night. you can spot dark areas at background which means the shading is not a dark to light one like the first image.
http://files.visionfall.com/pics/20mar2009_03.jpg
I think this is the effect of mist. If you have mist in your scene then background is lighter than foreground. Am I right?
SO THE QUESTION IS DO YOU THINK A MISTY SCENE LOOKS BETTER OR JUST A RAINY SCENE?
The details were unnecessary, I washed them away. Plus I increased the contrast of the image. The more closer to the camera, the darker and higher contrast the image gets. Plus I think I need to light the edges of the objects that are felt in darkness with stong light. cause in a rainy night wet objects reflect the environment lights strongly. Also I added some blurryness to the foreground lights to simulate the mist. The result is great and I'm going to apply this technique to all light sources.

p.s: My displays are LCDs and they really have problems in showing Pure black. what I saw and drew in my display was 95% black and near to 100% white and was in a very high contrast mode. So if what you see in your monitors is different, that's not what it's supposed to be... .

One thing that considers me are those horizontal lines on the back of character and maybe consider adding some more rain in foreground.
I like the rest of the picture, nice cyberpunk mood you'v managed to create

You can add a bit more constast and volume to the character. He's a bit flat so far.
Good work anyway, keep it up! Love the alley.
And those "rain drops" are not good, btw. Try to search refs and make them another way.
thank you guys for your comments. This rain is a draft version. I'm looking for pattern artworks to show me how to draw rain drops. If anyone have such an illustration or tutorial I'll appreciate the sharing.
And yes, the character needs more contrast. It's the most important object in the composition.

Here you go sir :)

I'v dig up lots of PS tuts for realistic rain effect and I think this one is best.
Hey, This tutorial is great. I'm going to use it. Thanks a lot :)
I'm working on coloring. I decided to paint the picture using blue and orange values. I think it gives a nice effect. comments are welcome.

This is a more completed version of the painting. All I need to finish it is to give some reflections of the lamps and neons to the bottom surface of street.
critz are welcome.

And here I added the refletion effect to the ground.
I have some problems in illustrating the effect of wet body. I think those splashed rain drops on the body work well but I want to give the body and armor an effect of wetness and reflection. I tried several brushed, but no good result was achieved.
Any idea?

I think I'm done with the painting. I just darkened the brigt color of those chinese traditional lights above the image to draw more attention to character and the space below. The more I play with my painting the less good result I get. So I guess that's the point I should stop working on it.
I'm satisfied with my image, although it's not exactly what I had in my mind but it's 80% close. So I feel happy.
