What? What? What?
I think CG challenges donīt need rules, themes and special categories anymore! Enough said!
To make my feels a bit more clear for you folks, here are some of my thoughts.
I donīt want to say that there is no room for some of the awarded entries, but I found this challenge and results controversial at least.
You provided very detailed instructions about what the Steampunk Culture is about. It has certain feel, certain elements. There was a very good research about it in many entries as well. Thatīs the first thing I am going to point at here. I found Tyson Ibele's entry great in many ways but it has big lack of Steampunk in it. So I can say about "Concept Art Award entry" and "Art Direction Award". "Image Excellence Award" - well, lucky one from the amount of great image entries, but I believe I saw more steampunk in other with great finish. I feel very sorry for artists that took the importance of Steampunk elements as a must to meet the rules what was very timeconsuming because of details and design and especially the video category had only 2 weeks over the image category, what sound now even more crazy then during the challenge.
I have overall doubts about "Team Entry Excellence" since I read somewhere around rules that character animation and storytelling is far more important then technical aspect.
I am very dissapointed about importance of WIP in this challenge in connection with special categories. What the hack is "Sculpture Award" about? Basic 3D model with textures to look good in low rez render? "Best Character", "Animation", "Modeling" - Why we had to submit all the wip work with all the concepts and things that are just hidden in final entry when it seems like non of the judges is going through them? Why such rush with announcing the winners? Take your time, the prizes canīt run away...
You went too far with the way of judging and overall run of CG Challenge and I have to say 200.000 in prizes can't solve this issue. Too much of subjectivity and laziness in it.

Oh, look. Yet another claver way of suppressing a diffrent opinion. Make me look a whiner so that you donīt have to take responsibility for your actions. Well done.

Every challenge has its controversies, whether its regards to the rules, the entries, or the judging. There was no reason to suspect that this one would be any different. Rest assured that the decisions made by the judges were not made lightly, and a great deal of discussion was had behind the scenes with regards to how the rules should be interpreted and how the entries were to be evaluated. To suggest that the decisions were "rushed" or "lazy" is an insult to the people who put their time and effort into making this thing possible.
There are 3 more categories without an winner:Lighting, Digital Painting and Landscape/Matte painting .

Oh, look. Yet another claver way of suppressing a diffrent opinion. Make me look a whiner so that you donīt have to take responsibility for your actions. Well done.
I'm not taking responsibility for my actions? When I put my name on the judges roster, I took responsibility for my actions. Don't come with your high and mighty attitude because you'll fall right off that self-made pedestal.
And this isn't about you having a "different opinion". You've come into a thread that is meant to congratulate the winners, and you're complaining about the results. This is not only extraordinarily gauche, but also insulting to everyone involved in the challenge. It also makes you look like a bad loser - and believe me, that's not a good look.
If you want to talk about different opinions, then take your own advice. The judges had a different opinion to yours. Mystery solved.

Congrets to all winners!
Many of them missed the theme. The teme was "Myts and Legends", not "Fairy Tales and Novels"... But I guess most of the entrys fail in that field, so there was no point in disqualifying majority...
Not fer to other entrys thou...

To suggest that the decisions were "rushed" or "lazy" is an insult to the people who put their time and effort into making this thing possible.
My suggestion is based on one simple fact - 3 weeks are not enough to judge so many entries with heavy WIPs. This challenge is theme based challenge, every wrong interpretation of it should cound. This challenge is WIP challenge, every bit of work done for it should count.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback I appreciate that you didnīt call me silly and you considered my words.

Responsibility is not only putting your name somewhere but also taking the time to explain if someone have doubts and ability to discuss reasonably. While you are only being harsh.
And this isn't about you having a "different opinion". You've come into a thread that is meant to congratulate the winners, and you're complaining about the results. Responsibility is not only putting your name somewhere but also taking the time to explain if someone have doubts and ability to discuss reasonably. While you are only being harsh.
If you wanted to discuss this "issue" you could have contacted the admins privately. Instead, you came and complained repeatedly in this celebratory thread. It's like going to someone's birthday party, and when they all start singing Happy Birthday, you start running around and shouting that the person doesn't deserve a party. I am all for discussing things, but there is a time and a place for that. And this isn't it. What you've done is gauche, and it's disrespectful.
And as for your accusation about the judges not taking the time to look at the WIPs: I followed this entire challenge from the day it started (hell, I was involved from the very conception of the challenge, months before it even launched). I then took an entire day out of my busy schedule to look at all the final works. It's presumptuous, and downright insulting, for you to sit and pass judgement on the judges when you have no idea how much time any of us spent looking at the work. Assumptions, as they say, are the mother of all screw ups.
Now, I don't expect you to agree with all the winners. But the least you could do is have the good grace to leave this thread alone as a place of celebration, not disgruntlement.
There are 3 more categories without an winner:Lighting, Digital Painting and Landscape/Matte painting .

Again, I clicked the link "Discuss this article on CGTalk"... it is sitting there right after the Honorary Mentions list. Never heard about this "congratulations only" thing before. If you wanted to have this thread celebratory, there should be a mention about it somewhere.
I took the time to explain my thoughts about what was wrong from my point of view, it was not empty bitching. I remember you involved in FAQ and some of the entries from the begining. Thatīs why I donīt understand the way you wrote your reply. Take it however you want I know why I had to write what I did. And after all the competitions I have done around here I am standing behind my words and you didnīt give me the reason to change it or to change the place where I did write them.

Well done to everyone who took part and especially well done to all the winners  I honestly didn't expect so much amazing work to come out of this contest, it was quite humbing... not to mention that it made judging really, really difficult! Having said that, despite the amount of effort it took, it was never a chore because there were so many excellent pieces and videos to view.
And for those whining about the judging bear in mind the results reflect the overall consensus of a dozen judges and it's unlikely any one person's views match this consensus 100%, whether they be judge, participant or observer. That's pretty much the concept of having a panel of judges.
So well done to the winners again and have fun with your new toys :)

Once again I'm amazed by the brilliant high standards of the challenge winners and so many other entrants who did not make it this time. Looking at the winners' work is as much pure fun as it is inspiring (and humbling), and that says a lot about the caliber of these challenges.
And many thanks to the organisers and judges, yet again, for making these things possible. I imagine that events like these must take an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes time and energy. Great job, folks

Leigh, I think you're being unnecessarily rough on Juraj.
You've come into a thread that is meant to congratulate the winners
Huh? I would prefer to believe people (including me) are congratulating the winners because we want to, not because that's the only thing allowed in this thread.
In my thread you were quick to get angry at people who did not see things your way and you called people 'obtuse' and so on. I got so fed up by your rudeness that I got quite disillusioned and lost interest in the challenge and it was only the warm-hearted and generous encouragement of other entrants that brought me back.
Please understand that when you dish out the personal criticisms your status as a judge and moderator amplifies whatever you are saying. I respectfully suggest that maybe you are unaware of how you come across when you call people whiners, gauche, a loser, falling of self-made pedestals, obtuse and other inflammatory words.
So please show some courtesy to Juraj even if you don't agree with what he says. In a mature community like this one, I don't see the need to be overly aggressive. Remember the guidelines around here:
Before posting, please review the following:
Be courteous and polite. Show respect to the opinions and feelings of others. Use of the forums is a privilege, not a right.
Engage your brain before your mouth. You are responsible for your own words and any harm they may cause.
Don't dilute the forums with irrelevant and unnecessary fluff. CGTalk is a professional, moderated forum. It's a place to talk about all things related to computer graphics.
Critiques and responses to images are to be constructive and related to improving the quality of the artwork.
As someone who has apparently seen those guidelines more than 20,000 times, perhaps you might be well served to have another look at them ;)

AFAIC this challenge has been one of the best I've seen here in a long, long time; the results are outstanding, and if you won something, or recognize the quality of the winners' work, ignore those few trolls who really can't seem to understand that there's a time and a place for everything (and this isn't the time or the place for whinging).
Take the weak arguments that dress this sour grapes salad some would serve as further complimenting on the quality of your work :)

Congratulations to all those who won some prestige and awards, but don't forget that just being involved in a wonderfully run competition and community is a win in it's own right. I just got to watch Ivanisevich's piece and after watching I said, "wow that was awesome", so I'm in big agreement there, which is good enough for me! His piece really exemplified storytelling. I figured the stills category would be a nightmare to judge, as there were about +20 pieces that looked like professional work. Just to be in that honorable mention is still world class, as the judging could go many different avenues depending on who is involved, which is what makes a subjective competition fun in the first place. Wow, just some astonishing pieces all the way around, top to bottom. I'm not sure this challenge can ever be topped.
Good job peoples and see you next time!

I'd like to add how impressed I was with the storytelling side of the ivanisavich film. To get across a story and a twist in such short time takes real skill. There is no doubting the high standards in all other areas and in the other entrants, but an extra 'Bravo' from me for his story

If you wanted to discuss this "issue" you could have contacted the admins privately.
I have to take issue with this, I'm sorry, I tried to get in contact with admins before about a discussion I started that was closed for no justified (or in my opinion justifiable) reason. Last I tried, all the admins I checked had personal messages disabled and all my inquiries into the other official channels went unanswered.
As far as the competition goes I have nothing but praise for the winners, great work indeed. And congratulations as well to those who entered and finished their entries for the competition. As anyone who has done personal projects knows simply finishing is many times a huge hurdle.
Congratulations to everyone, awesome work!!
Stills, animations and concepts, all worth the work done
Keep up the good work guys!

Many of them missed the theme. The teme was "Myts and Legends", not "Fairy Tales and Novels"...
I'm suprised to read that only one other person picked up on this. Alice in Wonderland and Pinnochio are Not myths or Legends. They're fairly modern children's stories.
This is absolutely no comment on the talent and skills of the winning artists and I'm not trying to whip up a hornets nest of a debate. I'm just a little taken aback that so many entrants have been allowed to skirt around certain rules set in place at the competitions inception. I'd assume that most people entering this competition are used to working to professional briefs. It wouldn't be acceptable to a client to change the brief so why has it been allowed here?
This is a very personal point of view, and is not intended to offend any one involved in the competition. I will however be reluctant to enter another CG competition on this website. I entered it as a personal challenge outside of my usual working practice and proud that I managed to deliver it on time. This has been tarnished by the fact that I worked very hard towards a brief that in the end turned out to be fairly irrelevant.

Actually, I've also been wondering about this "brief switch" seen on lots of entries..

You're not the first person to mention it.
It was covered in the FAQ right when the challenge started.

It was decided fairly early in the piece as part of the discussion in the FAQ thread that "Myth and Legend" was to be expanded to include "Fable and Fairytale". While the theme is important to the challenge, in the end there's always a little wiggle room, and a well done piece which is slightly off theme will likely win over a poorly done piece which stuck tightly to the theme.
