My name is Dusan Kastelic and with a couple of friends, I'm working in the Bugbrain studio. We are mostly working on 2D animations and Flash games, which is not a bad way to make for a living. But anyway I decided that I need a little break and make a project “for my soul”. And that's how I started to work on “Chicory 'n' Coffee”.

You could see the trailer of the movie in my portfolio:
"Chicory 'n' Coffee" in my CGportfolio (http://kikiriki.cgsociety.org/gallery/733222/)

or on the YouTube (though it runs chunky in HD resolution)
"Chicory 'n' Coffee" on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs_TTh2LG8s)

There were many problems during the production! I could write a book about them! Mainly because of a really tiny budget. So I want to thank again (and again) to: Iztok Mlakar (Author of the Poem), Cory Collins, Uros Hohkravt, Ken Heslip, Mateja Staric (Sound Design) & Saso Krumpak (Executive Producer) for working (almost) for free.
Software used: Animation:Master v13, XaraX, Adobe After Effects, Zbrush.

I learned most of what I know about 3D animation from this forum (and similar Internet resources) and I feel it's time to give something back to the community. So while I was working on the project I tried to note down the progress on the Webpage dedicated to the project:

www.bugbrain.com/chicory (http://www.bugbrain.com/chicory)

P.S. The World Premiere of the film will be at the Cinequest festival (CA), February 26nd (for other projections please check my webpage).

Looking forward for your comments!

Hej Dusan.

That is really great work. I know personally how much work was invested into this. And it came out superb. I love character design, i love the song , render is great. Since i am an animator i think animation could have a bit more love but hey overall i love it.

hope we see more of this stuff especially in a small country like Slovenia.

Good work, keep it up!

Jure.

No pa smo koncno docakali !!!

It's a very old piece of mine I made for the band of my friends.

I whish you all the luck in animation festival. I read on your blog that it is already on a very good path and the film is highly regarded by those who saw it. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Looks like yesterdays World premiere at the Cinequest in San Jose went well! Today I received three invitations to the festivals! So looks like the film will travel a lot in the future (mostly without me, since I'm having a little phobia from traveling. Taking my dog to pee every day is enough to satisfy my desire for traveling and adventures) So I'm sure you won't have problems to see the whole animation in the Festival near you. As soon as this festival circle will be over, I will post the whole animation on my Portfolio. So check it out from time to time.

I love character design, i love the song , render is great. Since i am an animator i think animation could have a bit more but hey overall i love it.
I agree... animation could be better. (well everything allways could be better. If I would do this Film all over again it would look very different) To my defense those were the very first sequences we made. Latter ones are better. I planned that I will polish them a little more, after I will finish all other shoots. But unfortunately I was way behind the deadline (I have almost been sued because I missed the deadline) so I have to keep them in the final film. I picked this particular fragment in the trailer because it's shows the spirit of the whole movie.

It's so good that it takes ones breath away.
 I'm blushing :-) Thank you!

Fantastic work, Dusan! Congratulations and best wishes at the festivals.
Jim! Long time no hear! I see that you are doing just fine with C4D! Do you miss the old A:M days?

Great work, only one crit and that's regarding the movie quality, the cloth textures flicker quite severely on the youtube HD version. Shame but apart from that it's brilliant, I loved the baby popping up in the photoframe and the excited giggle :)

the cloth textures flicker quite severely on the youtube HD version.

Yeah... flickering is visible because of the compression. There's no flickering in the original (uncompresed) footage or on 35mm film print.

"To my defense those were the very first sequences we made. Latter ones are better. I planned that I will polish them a little more, after I will finish all other shoots."

I worked on this project with Dusan, and although what he says is true, I feel I must say this in his (and my) defense as well, Dusan was looking for something other than the standard "CG animation" feel...we were leaning more towards finely crafted marionettes or somewhat of a stop motion feel...I remember several times Dusan would be looking at what I had done in a scene and tell me " It's too much! Tone it down!" and on occasion he would send me a scene he had done, asking me why I thought it was not working and I would reply " It's too much, tone it down...." so we both had to remember that we were not trying to compete with the likes of Pixar, but let Chicory have a style of its own. I think we succeeded :)

It's a beautiful film, and it was a real learning experience to work on it. Dusan did a fantastic job!

Great work, I really like the rendering style, the character design and story, it was all pretty charming. If you are looking for feedback, the character animation was a bit weak and as a general note too slow throughout. Best of luck with the film!

Hi,

I think I remember meeting you there....did you participate in the q and a session after the first screening?

BTW, it will be showing at the SCAD Film Festival, in Savannah, Georgia, the week of Oct 31 thru Nov 7th. I think the first screening will be on Thurs Nov 5th. I'll be there from the 5th thru the weekend, so come on down to Savannah if you get the chance.

Thank you so much for your nice comments and support! :)

My plan was to show the film on couple of Festivals and after that release the whole Film on YouTube to be available for everyone to watch. But film was quite successful at the festival and couple a days ago I even signed a contract with world distributor! Unfortunately that means that I'm not allowed to show my film on YouTube anytime soon. :deal:

Since I'm getting quite a few requests from people who would like to see the film, I decided to make a compromise. :lightbulb YouTube have a special feature with which you can "hide" your film from public view and show it only to the invited ones (actually to 25 YouTube users listed as your "friends"). So if you really want to see the film, please:
-make a YouTube account (if you don't have one already)
-then go to my account ( www.youtube.com/user/bigbugbrain (http://www.youtube.com/user/bigbugbrain) )
-and set me as a "friend".
-After I will get your invitation to become "Friends" I will send you an invitation to see my film which will appear in "Inbox" of your YouTube account.

P.S. One of the "side effects" of getting a world distributor was, that we Synchronised the Film to English. Of course the English version is not as good as Slovenian (not only that lip sync doesn't match perfectly, a lot of the softness and humor of the original version was lost during translation. But anyway- only couple of lucky bastards that actually speaks Slovene can enjoy the original- the others will probably like this English version much more). You can watch the English "Trailer" at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFLxlfmVmF4&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFLxlfmVmF4&feature=related)

P.P.S. Veljko, I'm really honoured! I'm a big fan of yours "She who measures"! I'm still not sure, but I hope I will be able to attend to the Balkanima myself. So maybe we will meet and speak in person!
