View Full Version : What kind of graphic card?
ostov 07-03-2003, 07:22 PM Hey guys!
I know this question has been asked a lot of times before...
Anyway, I have not idea of what kind of card I will buy for a new pc. I dont have that much money to spend. I probly will not have the money to the GF5900, but we will see. I will do must cad work (90% cad. 10% games) U can see the price in NOK on the side of the page. Give me some advice.... :) The best would be if u have tested more then one of the card on the list so u can tell me what is better then what.

If you don't have that much money how are you going to buy the 5900? But anyways, if it were up to me I would get the ti 4600, but if that is still a little to pricey I would go with the 4200. What I wouldnt get was a radeon, or the 4800. I wouldnt get the 4800 cause the performance is not worth the extra cash over the 4200 imo.

The thing is that the 5900 have got very good fps +OpenGL2.0 and DX9. I might get some extra money.... I am a bit afraid from the TI card becaus they are getting pretty old and I dont wanne experince a old card igain.... I am using a voodoo 3000 so u might know what I am talking about.. :)

Ti's are only a year old and still perform fine in apps unless your doing massive poly count stuff, or need all the overlays and such, but thats quadro territory. 5900 just came out and are still at a premium, so its your call. Or you can get one of the lower end quadros that cost just as much as Ti's and have full hardware support. I have yet to max my 4600 in Maya or Max.

and hack it to act as a firegl x1
i have it running and very impress and would never go back

well I know you said no quadro but I think the quadro 500 might be good. it has the same chip(NV31) as the 5600 ultra. Im thinking of saving some money and getting it. would this be a good idea. whats the difference between a quadro 500 and a geforce 5600.
by the way it costs the same as the 5900
I would stay away from an ATI, there are plenty of people here that can atest to its poor performance due to its drivers and app support. Just get a Ti4600 and wait till the FXs get their mainstream price. I doubt your doing anything that requires that much horsepower, or investment.
And keep one thing in mind, there is no point to buying a piece of hardware for your computer thinking its future proof, or have you prepared for the future, because the cycle is 6 months. FXs have only a few more months till they are outdated also and it will be quite some time before any games are out that can take full advantage of them. Get a cheap 4600 and ride out the wave until FXs are cheap. The only FX worth getting is the 5900 Ultra, and its not cheap.

*is enjoying his 5900 very very much*
my card is exceedingly easy to overclock, and its auto-shutdown temp is 100C, so I've got a little headroom to play with:D:D
