Ok, so this is my first modelling challenge, and I really shouldn't be doing it as i have a degree to finish, but i love the 80's cartoon theme and don't want to spend a month and a half watching everyone else modelling and wishing I had joined in.

As it is my first challenge, and I do have restrictions on my time I'm gonna start by going for some relatively simple modelling and see how things go.

Seeing a trailer on youtube for jayce and the wheeled warriors the other day brought back many memories, so i'm gonnna go with that as my cartoon, and my initial idea is to do a diorama of Oon (the little magical suit of armour character - see pic below) being chased by a Saw trooper (a monster mind vehicle with a large buzzsaw on a rotating stalk - see pic below).

Now there aren't many reference pics online that i can find (if anyone comes across any please let me know), but I have got hold of the actual series, so might try and get some screen shots from the episodes. I'm also gonna do some sketches of the characters and my diorama idea, which i will post up next.

Good luck to everyone, I can't wait to see the models people are gonna do, and here's to hoping my first modelling challenge is a good one :D

This sounds like a great idea. I shall be keeping an eye on this one...

Here's a few quick character sketches I've done from what reference pics i can find. I don't want to stray too far from the original, but I'm thinking the slightly modernised concept in the last sketch would look cool, with the larger lance and helmet feather. Gonna start work on the base mesh and hopefully post something up tonight :D

Finally I got a few hours free to start modelling (well i made them free anyway :D). Just working on the base mesh for Oon at the moment, all fairly simple stuff, just trying to keep the mesh as clean as possible, here's a pic and a wireframe of what i have soo far.

Time for another update, i found another few hours to do some more work on my Oon model. No issues soo far, except finiding the time to do it :S
But the base mesh is now finished, so next job will be to UV Map it and begin working on the pose for the model. Even though I did plan to use this model to learn to rig in maya, my lack of time means I will probably just take the model into Zbrush and use the transpose tool for posing.

Anyways here's what i've got:

Great choice! Oon was one of my favourite characters as a kid.

You're off to a great start, right now I'd look at altering some of his proportions.. If you scale up his head & squash his body down a little it'll make him more appealing. My nostalgia fogged brain remembers him with a 'squatter' physique than you have right now, but I might be way off in terms of accuracy.

Look forward to seeing your progress!
