Can anyone take me through the steps of flashing a bios? Im using an asus a7n8x deluxe but the instructions in the manual and website are a bit vague for me to follow

I tried to create the bootdisk by typing "format a:/s" like it told me to in the manual but it says /s is an invalid parameter?

Nem,

www.bootdisk.com

Go to

DrDOS 7.x Disk For BIOS Flashing Basic - No Drivers

Then go to...

DrDOS7x Disk For BIOS Flashing - No Drivers | Alt1 | Alt2

This will allow you to format a bootable floppy from windows 2000 or windows XP.

Then you copy the awflash that Asus specifies on their website, along with the new bin file.

Follow the directions EXACTLY.

If you have a UPS, I'd make sure the computer is connected to it during the bios flash procedure.

yeah you have 2k or xp then.

you can make a bootable floppy for bios flashing using this program
http://koti.mbnet.fi/jnylund/Tiedostot/Files/drdflash.exe
It may very well be linked someplace on ASUS's website as well.

thanks! i just flashed it and its running the latest version, but i have 1 problem and 1 question (well its not really a problem, just a concern):

1. it said in my manual thats it advisable to keep a backup of ur current bios, thats understandable, it also said that it wud give me the option to back it up onto the same floppy, but it didnt. how important exactly is keepin a backup of it?

2. im running an XP3200 processor which has 400FSB, the motherboard (asus a7n8x deluxe) has dual channel memory, when i boot up, on the post screen it says this:
Memory Frequency is at 200mhz. Dual Channel Mode

is that right for a 400FSB processor? Seeing as its in dual channel mode the displayed FSB will in fact be doubled? I just need confirmation on this please :)

my rule of thumb is if it isn't broken don't fix it
so if you arn't having any problem with your pc and don't risk flashing bios

1.) a backup is usefull jsut incase your flash didn't go as plan
and so you can also go back to the previous bios if the new one isn't working or if it's giving your problems

2.) not really up with the AMD chips
but it sounds abotu right
since you ahve DDR memory
it's 200MhzX2= 400MHZ ( thats what the "double" data memory comes from) at least i think ;)

have you got auto memory speed enabled or anything ??? I have 333Mhz ram and my machine always displayed 333 : dual channel enabled... Maybe you're running PC2100 RAM not PC2700/PC3200 ???

im positive im running PC3200 memory, thats why i wanted to make sure the FSB was running at 400FSB to reduce bottlenecking
and i cant find anything that auto detects mem speeds

hmmm you should be seeing 400Mhz RAM detected then, dual channel means as it's writing to one stick of RAM it can read from the other, dunno what to suggest maybe Greg is the man for the job...

1. it said in my manual thats it advisable to keep a backup of ur current bios,

You can always redownload the original bios off the net. Backing up your old bios to a disk is usually a safeguard in case something screws up and you can no longer access the web.

Memory Frequency is at 200mhz. Dual Channel Mode

200x2=400.

Remember that the memory in your system is DDR or "Double Data Rate" SDRAM. This means for each megahertz the ram is running at, its actually running at 2x that. So PC3200 runs at 200 megahertz, x 2 for DDR = 400.

And then since its Dual Channel DDR...hehe its actually running around 800 megahertz bandwidth wise.
