Does this mean we're live now?

So if we have other 80's cartoons outside of the master list, do we suggest them here? Also, are we constrained to Saturday morning cartoons only, or can we allowed to do primetime stuff, like the Simpsons?

If so:
The Simpsons (1987)
Beetlejuice (1989)
Alvin & the Chipmunks (1983)
Muppet Babies (1984)
Dennis the Menace (1986)

There are more here:
http://www.retrojunk.com/tv/list/1980/2/pop/

Now in the official rules it says that we can re-imagine cartoon characters in our own way. Does that mean we can take the route like this artist took to Futurama? (I don't know the name of the artist... sorry whoever you are.)

Added
Beetlejuice (1989)
Alvin & the Chipmunks (1983)
Muppet Babies (1984)
Dennis the Menace (1986)

to the master list,
by the Simpsons are out.(we will do them in the future)

and yes, that futurama drawing is the kind of re-imagining I would love to see...

Here are a few more from the lists I've read that I remember watching as a kid:

The Snorks (1984)
Dinosaucers (1987)
The Berenstain Bears (1985)
Pac-Man (1982) *
Pound Puppies (1986)
Bravestarr (1987)
The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show (1983) *
Pole Position (1984) *
Astroboy (1982) *
Spiderman and his Amazing Friends (1983) *
The Flintstone Kids (1986) *
The California Raisins (1989)
Thundarr the Barbarian (1980)

I've attached an asterisk to shows that are derived from another property, and potentially infringing on any future challenges. I'm seeing plenty of superhero, disney, and movie-related properties over there too.

-Thanks

Is this stricly 80's production or can we also do stuff done in the late 70's, which primarily aired in the early 80's?

Cheers!

Quick Question:
Do we have to specify which of the four streams we are going for, or will an entry be considered for all of them?

RobertoOrtiz
02-27-2009, 07:55 PM
we prefer for people to pick a stream, BUT

you can change streams if you wish mid challenge.

Hello master Roberto :). I just wanted to ask if non-animated characters from the 80's are eligible for this contest?

This is my first challenge to enter, so I didn't know where to post my question, other than the thread I already started.. sorry

Anyway I was thinking about Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson. Newspaper Comic strip started November 1985. They are my childhood and I would love to have a go on them. :)

cheers,

Mike

At at the end of the challenge the final model will have to look like a scene that we might see in a cg movie or a commercial.

this will be my first HCR so i guess i am a bit out of the loop as to the overall idea. i have looked back at the previous winners and it seems most are fully shaded, textured, and lit. i'm assuming this is much more than just a modeling competition in that respect. am i correct? or does a basic grey clay render and wireframe have just as much of a chance of winning as a fully lit scene?

thanks,
adam

RobertoOrtiz

people can take the model as far as they wish.

But a simple unshaded model it is just fine, after all we are a modeling competition.

How the Original interpretation category model must be presented, diorama? neutral background? photographic back plate? cg or painted background?.

Can we compete in two categories or more with the same model? an example:

- Battlecat is a character and a vehicle at the same time, so, this one can compete in all the categories if done right or at least three if we skip the action figure.

Mirrored.

Hi,

This is my first time participating in a challenge; looking forward to having fun while I learn in this community. I did see Dennis the Menace in your master list and was wondering if I could work with that.
Can two people be working on the same character or normally do we have to make sure if the character has not already been picked before picking it ourselves?

Thanks
Asha

More than one person can work on the same topic. You just have to decide if you want to work on the same as someone else.

I have a query. If we're making a character on a vehicle do we need to sculpt the details in the relaxed pose and later on pose it atop the vehicle. Or can we just pose the lower subdivision model first and sculpt the details afterwards. Are there any rules regarding this?

Hey, I want to model Frieza/Freezer from DBZ.
But I think there's some sort of grey spot according to the time Frieza appeared on the series.
According to Wikipedia:
Frieza is introduced in chapter #247 Dark Clouds Swirl Over Planet Namek (暗雲うずまくナメック星 An'un Uzumaku Namekkusei?) first published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on November 6, 1989.
That doesnt mean he appeared on the animated series before the 90's and I read on this topic that non-animated characters arent allowed.
I'm not sure when he appeared on the animated series. Wikipedia says that on chapter 53, whenever that is.

Is it possible to use a character that had cartoons in multiple decades; say Popeye?

I'd rather like to get involved in this one, but I was born in '91! I don't have any fond memories!

do the models need to be texture for 80s cartoon?

RageOfAges

Textures are optional, and shouldn't be taken into account when casting your votes. After all, it is a modeling challenge.

The artist also has to post total length of time it took to do and program used.

Roberto, you said we have to post the total length of time... you just wanting a rough approximation? Like "I worked on this off and on from January 10th until April 15th" or something more precise?

Forgive if this has been asked and posted before, but I get most of my reference from Corbis.com and similar sites. Just browsing and saving the watermarked previews they generate. Can I post these as reference or does it infringe on copyright laws?

If a team of two people are working on a diorama with two vehicles in it, can those vehicles also be considered for the best vehicle category or can they only be entered in one category?

Thanks

This might be helpful,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1980s_American_animated_television_series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Anime_of_the_1980s

Although some of those would be rather ironic, as they had live action components to them.

I have a couple of questions about the final entry...

1. I made a couple of Quicktime turntable movies and uploaded them to Photobucket, but they got converted to .flv (Flash video) format, and the quality isn't as good. Are FLVs acceptable for turntables? If not, any suggestions on where I can post a Quicktime movie? Unfortunately, I don't have my own website.

2. Do we post our final entry in both our own WIP thread and the main Challenge thread, or do we just put a link to our WIP thread in the main thread?

Thanks!

I'm a little nervous. I guess I should have asked these questions long ago.
But I am new at this, and I wanted to know how to submit my final Renders.
Do I just reply to the HCR thread and include my images or their are other ways to do that?

Just a general question about these hardcore modeling challenges. Are we able to post updated work in the Past Challenges Archive forum? For example I have an older HCR challenge i was thinking of working on again and would like feedback on, or is it more appropriate to start a new thread in the WIPs forum?

WyattHarris

Question for Roberto or any other Mod that may know. I'm reading the CGS Newsletter email when I get to the 'Hot CGTalk Threads'. I've been monitoring it the last few times and I've noticed that there are always 3-5 threads in the HMC that have more views and more replies than most in the HOT section. Why don't the HMC threads appear here as it would really boost traffic to the challenge?

Is there some metric I don't know about that kicks them or are challenge threads just not included in this list? If thats the case could they possibly add a section that did include the challenge threads?
