I made this model in Silo...Is the same possible with Blender....Im aware the blender does not have support for ngons...but i was wondering if theres a trick to do this.

Thanks

It's possible, just you'd have triangles on the mesh, it might take more time. But it's still doable.

Blender really should have Ngon support though!

uh oh, ngon support raises it's ugly head again.

Some might say that software with ngon support makes lazy modellers....only kidding!

This is certainly possible in blender, use the knife tool and have a go!

Or just sculpt it and create normal, displacement maps. Still easily doable with geometry though. I used to be a silo user, it's just a different workflow in blender that's all.

how did you do it in Silo?

its easy in silo...just cut straight through the mesh.....the knife tool in blender is of no use here...I think it would take a lifetime to model it using the knife tool ;)....the only solution i think right now is booleans....but this is fairly time consuming too...:(

Any other solutions pple?

Blender's knife tool works fine. I put this together in about five minutes just to show that it can be done quickly.
I started off with a 6X6 grid and extruded it down along the z axis, also removeing the bottom and back faces.
I then added an array modifier to build up the stairs, there's lots of tutorials on the array modifier so i won't go into it here.
Finally i used the knife tool multicut set to 2 to make the worn bits. Selected the inner faces created by the knife tool and moved them down along z.
I then switched to top view, turned on proportional editing to shape the indents and finally deleted any unwanted edge loops. Simples 8)

>Is this possible to make in Blender

Definitely yes.

>Is it gonna be done EXACTLY like the way it's done in Silo?

No.

>Is it easier/more difficult?

Depends on how you're used to doing things.. I personally hate ngons with passion and the fact that there is development for them in blender is sad.. but that's just me; i hope this doesn't turn to "another n-gons vs. quads and tris" thread..

You can learn to use quads and tris and do it in Blender, or wait for n-gons support to get better (possibly in version 2.51 according to the developer), or use Silo if you think it's uncomfortably tedious to do in Blender.. nothing wrong with using the "right" tool for the job..
