Too bad someone went in there and f-ed up the rating system by voting for most images with a 0 (ZERO)...reaeaeally mature attitude on that jokers behalf, thanks for screwing it up for the rest of us (and the artists)...

Thanks for the news, finally an easy to navigate gallery !!!
Hey you should steal the rating system from luxology.net.

Damn did I really said Luxology ?:p

I like the new layout, but I really don't think the rating system is necessary. It's completely pointless...I don't need other people to tell me if an image is well done or not. It just encourages clowns to come in and give ridiculously low (or high) ratings.

Still waiting for even a tiny update of the video portion of the gallery.

The voting system depresses me. I don't even feel good about my 4 pics inside anymore.:thumbsdow

What a great improvement for the gallery, at last it's possible to see the things you want to see.
On the voting; It's just opinions. Can non-members vote?

I like the new navigation.

I kind of think the voting system is a bad idea though.

Well, I'm not very happy with Newteks gallery.
Sure, the new system is better, but the images are so jpg compressed and so small that it's hard to get a real good look of the actual image.
I much rather see alot less images in the gallery, just keep the best ones, and show them in the true size and good quality.

Cool! I like it, it's much easier to navigate.

I don't realy like the rating either, but I just don't pay attention to it.

EXCELLENT  A VAST improvement - big up to the web guys at Newtek, this is a much needed makeover.
I agree that the voting is a trifle unnecessary (and potentially cruel) especially since the stuff goes through such a rigorous selection process anyway, but I guess it's okay.

But the catagories are fantastic, just what it needed. Great stuff.

I just realized you can send images as e-cards! Cool!

Great job newtek. the gallery section proudly display the suberp images without bogging down the 56k dial up guys.

i agree with the voting system, totally useless, unless it was for a serious competition or contest but right now too many bozos just screwing up the hard work of talented people out there.

Great improvement, only my picture got a wrong copyright notice
:( Oh well, people make mistakes, so I just e-mailed them. Hope they will fix it soon.

The voting system can be put to good use by showing the highest rated images on the main page, thus giving the best impression to new visitors that come to the gallery.

It's sad to hear that the voting system is being sabotaged.:hmm:

I'll second that. Sometimes the JPG compression is so extreme that you don't get a clear image until you click on the image itself.

For example, the image of my celshaded elf-girl looks horrible on this page:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=1

...until you click on her, and get this fine, clear image:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?pid=620&fullsize=1

---------------

The same thing happened to my elf here:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=90

Clicking on the image brings up a better version here:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?pid=189&fullsize=1

---------------

Then there's this one:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=71

...which also doesn't look as good as the "real" image:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?pid=167&fullsize=1

---------------

Lore fares slightly better:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=0

...but even he suffers from slight distortion, when compared to his "real" counterpart:
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?pid=621&fullsize=1

---------------

I am glad that my work made it into the NewTek gallery, but I can only pray that vistors click on the images to see the non-distorted versions. The distorted versions make the LightWave celshader look awful.

How come all images can't be clicked on to get a bigger one?
I sent mine in 800x600, but still only their messed up little mini version are viewable on the gallery.

Actually, what I think is happening here is not so much the JPEG compression as it is the resizing tool being used. For example if you take the full size version of the first example Celshader just gave, and size it down to the smaller size and JPEG export it in Photoshop using the same ~20K target size-- it looks great.

Photoshop has nice resizing/resampling. NT is probably using some other tool to resize the images en masse. Maybe PHPs resizing tool. Anyways, that is how you get bad aliasing effects in images that JPEG could otherwise handle very well.

I know about this issue because I've made my own web-based image management tool that creates various thumbnail and preview images from originals.

True...I just created JPG replacements for all four distorted images and they match the filesize and image size without distorting the image. Something weird happened when the images got resized for NewTek's site. :curious:

I just emailed the replacements for the distorted images to the Gallery email; I hope the webmaster has a free moment and a kind heart!

I hope he got alot of time, since they really should fix this for ALL images.
The gallery are supposed to show images that help to sell the program, and this problem don't help.

The problem with the resizing is that it is using PHP's GD graphics library to resize the images. It might not use bicubic compression and that is why it doesn't look too good. The gallery is running off of a PHP program called Coppermine, I checked out their site and it looks like they give you the option of compressing in another script called Imagemagick that might give better results then the PHP GD library.

I do like the change to the Gallery. Not sure what the purpose of the voting is though?

I think the voting is good idea.

As someone mentioned above, it'll help new visitors see the really cool stuff first so as to give a better impression. You can't deny that does make sense.
