hello everyone, i have modelled a robot with a mechanical tail similar to sentinals from the matrix movies, i was wondering if anyone could help me rigg it, so the tail bends like a scorpions tail, very smooth and like an arch shape

thanks in advance

try a spline IK, atleast for maya. and never use the first/base joint. start from the 2nd jt. after that, your tail rigging has to be consistent with the rest of what you're doing.

Use the Spline IK as suggested not the IK handle tool.

ok, i have used the IK spline tool but its not givin me any minipulators to move the spline n i get a warning " some items cannot be rotated in 3d view"

thanks

take a look here (http://www.simondanaher.com/tutorials/Maya-3-parter/Part2-Rigging/Maya3parter-Part2-Rigging-css.shtml)

can you post some screens of your model ??

When using the IK spline tool you can manipulate the spline (and hence the joints) but moving the CVs on the curve that was created. You should probably find another way to control those for animating purposes, like creating a cluster handle for each CV.

You use the IK Spline tool and make the connections for the start and end position. Then select the curve that was created in vertices mode. Select the vertices and then make each one a seperate cluster. The clusters allow you to control the shape of the spline. Make controllers to allow you to manipulate the clusters and the curve.
