Hey there,

The CGSociety was given Access All Areas for the Visual Effects night of nights over the weekend just gone. Staged the night before the Oscars, and staged in the same block, the VES Awards was a great opportunity for the visual effects crowd to pay homage and catch up in a great party of comeraderie.

Hi Fabio,

Georges Méliès was a French film maker from the very early days. In fact, he directed and shot the 'Trip to the Moon' film ('Le voyage dans la Lune') in 1902. The trophies at the VES Awards were based on the 'moon' character in that film. Méliès was not only a great film maker; he had a speciality. Visual effects.

He is attributed to being the first to have used a lot of stop-motion, exposure and focusing tricks in the earliest of his 590 films which made his name famous. Yes, the Visual Effects Society pay homage to him but Phil Tippett, in receiving the award, is being honored for what he has given the industry as well, with his name up alongside Méliès.

Now thats an honor, yes?

Yes, that is quite an honor, probably one of the highest honors in the VFX industry. Phil Tippet has certainly earned it though, what a genius.

And a congratulations to all who got awarded at VES award.
