Can anyone recommend a good render que for a small studio? We have an IT dept but they are not familiar with render farms. We have heard of Rush renderbut our IT seems to think it is very complicated..

There are lots out there, all of which are going to be "complicated" but some more than others. Some are open source like DrQueue which works great for some, and others are commercial like Deadline and Qube. What kind of software packages are being used, how many machines, are the machines dedicated render machines or workstations, what operating system, these are the things to consider when looking at a rendering management system. Without looking at the whole picture its hard to suggest a solution. Cheers!

thanks for the info. I will check them out. Trying to run about 4 dedicated nodes and 4 workstations with mental ray

For a "farm" that small, doesn't MR have some load-sharing features of its own built-in? (It's been a while.)

are you using the mental ray that comes with Maya or have you purchased mental ray commercial ("stand alone") licenses?

This makes a difference.
