Hello,

I'm partly copy pasting this message from another forum that seems a bit slow (no answers) so some of you might have read this already.

Anyway, I'm watching Digital tutors training on car modeling for XSI and trying to follow it in my own project at least partly.

In the vid they pretty much make the car side panels by drawing up curves along the side and then lofting. Well, seems to work, but would it work if I would do each panel separately?

I'm guessing this would be great for making the "seams" between panels and even add different fenders that could be changed to "tune" the model?
Any thoughts on this? I already started with this idea in mind (just one panel for now) but I'm a bit worried I might run into trouble with the edge flow - what do you think?

I'm kind of doing this for the first time. I never really tried other techniques than box modeling, witch turned out to be very difficult for cars.

Well, here's my first shot at the subject - front body panel for a Seat Leon Mk 1:

Thanks!

i prefer to model it as one piece making sure to have an edge where the seams will be. This helps to ensure as you said that there is consistency between panels. Especially in the reflections when you finally start rendering. It may look like a smooth and consistent transition, but when you render it the reflections may reveal even the very slightest imperfections.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I will most likely watch some more vids (4 cds, phew!), scrap that and start over with "whole side at once" -technique.

Is this then considered as "generally good practice" for modeling car bodies? (drawing curves for outlines and major countours and then lofting).

Well, here's a new start for the model with the "regular" approach - curves run through the entire car body and entire side is done at once.

Could somebody check out the front part here? I'm a bit shy of going any further in detail, because I think the very frontmost polygons are not quite optimal - what do you think?

Trying to keep things "all quads", because the area on and behind the headlight is almost a natural triangle. It should be all quads now, but what about the edge flow here? I'm definitely also so not having edges on the seams now - I guess this should be fixed also before adding any detail?

Thanks!
