Hello all!!

I started a new character for my growing demo reel last week. He is a space ranger assigned to capture intergalactic poachers. More to come on that story... Everything below the belt is still wip, the hands are also just blocked in. Any suggestions or crits on the model would be great. Specific suggestions on his pants armor or lack of would also be of much help!!

Updates coming soon...your critics and comments are always very welcomed!!

Excellent choice of design on the tights. I was going to mention that the color needed to be broken up but I didn't know. I was going to suggest an across the shoulders Star Trek and shorts but this is much better.

nice work man.

Like I said before make his boots more cleat/clamp like to grab that moon rock... You are so damn good with detailing they seem to plain.

Big kudos to his back pack and little tricorder numpad thing on his side..those are great..OH and the helmet is keen!

Can we get a close up on the face...I know you want simple but theres a feeas I think that woudl give him more character..tho you mgiht be planning on doing a lot with texture so i don't want to overstep ;) It's looking great...as usual.

Always been a fan of your work. YOu know just the right kind of detail to add. Question, in that first pic, what's the deal with his butt? Not that I normally look at a guy's bump but uh, there's some weird line thing going on there. Thought I should metnion it. Ignore me if ya fixed it already (or found a use for it you sly dog).

Fetus23
07-07-2003, 01:51 PM
Hey thanks for the kind words teyon!! Yes the line on his bum will be gone very soon...its a seam I havn't sewn yet...it appears in this picture aswell. :)

Ok this is the final model give or take a few minor details....I started rigging him last night and I think I'll make a little sidekick for him, nothing to complicated....I'm trying to keep this character more in the realm of the cartoon...

cuntnpaste : thanks man! no he's not mapped yet but i'll be testing the rig to see that all is modeled correctly , then i'll get started on the very light texturework for this character..

JonC and jampoz, fakie : thankx guys, glad you like him!!

Heres a close up of the face...I think he looks a little spaced out at the moment but that will change soon...working on the blenshapes....also these eyes may not be perminant...I'll play around with that.... your crits and comments, always welcome!!

Hey cutnpaste! The distance between the eyes is intentional :)...alot of the characters in my sketches seem to have this wide space between the eyes...room for the third eye i guess :)...I tried to bring that feature into this model. Thanks again for the kind words cutnpaste!!

Well, as a ranger he should have some targeting system linked to the shoulder weapon
This way he can aim and get target infos thru the visor, you know

Maybe the thing above his eyes is meant to go down for this purpose, does it?

But I think a one-eye-visor would look way more cool, just my impression about it

jampoz
07-08-2003, 12:30 AM
Oh, I was forgetting about this!

You know, as a space ranger, something like a bounty hunter, he should have a more determined expression, maybe this will change once you rig him and all, but look at the space cowboy from Toy Story

Yeah, maybe he was too much determined, eheheheh, but something like that :o)

Something like a man that have seen lots of nasty things in his life/career...

Or maybe he's meant to be a novice...

And what's the thing between his eyes?
Should I assume he's a cyborg and not a human by that?
Looks like an artificial third eye...

Fetus23
07-08-2003, 12:35 AM
Hey thats a great idea jampoz!..The visor does come down but an eye peice could easily be fashioned. I agree, it would look cool....one that folds away into the ear peice. I was also thinking of a mic of some kind...oh dear..more ideas :D..more fun ideas!! I must know when to stop :) . Thanks again for the great ideas jampoz!

So what's that third eye? You trying to hide his meaning to us? :o)

The Story of Rangers

The year is 2625 and the human race did not pass through the separation phase that was predicted for 2012 so good and evil still exists on this and neighbouring planets. We have discovered and harnessed "the speed of gravity”, using it to propel crafts instantly from one star to the next. We have also discovered the universe is not a friendly place and the selfish still run wild. The school has only gotten bigger.... there’s more to learn in this phase of evolution.
Space Rangers only want one thing...compassion for ALL living creatures no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. A space ranger will gladly put his life on the line for the little guys, a housefly or a gizzard for example.
He is equipped with some tools for achieving his goal. His "Quad-Quarter" Lets him open the 4D realm for easy access to information contained on the mother computer back home. It also allows him to access and communicate with allied computer planet systems (other forces (ET's) working for compassion). The glass container on his side can be used for many different things. From collecting rocks, dirt, air, gases, water, live/dead specimens or various other samples he may need to track down the killers. It also works well for his lunch. His backpack has many uses; flying is not one of them. The helmet takes care of flight, through the proper harmonic frequency it allows the brain to easily access the inner right side and "flip" gravity...so it pushes up instead of pulling down. The backpack is responsible for energy fields in hostile atmospheres, storage, light and music. Most rangers also have the “third eye” implant enabling them to communicate with or calm enraged or scared animals. His shoulder mounted tranquilizer gun is controlled by the flip down visor on his helmet. It's capable of shooting 3 different size darts of various intensities. With the blink of an eye a Ranger can target and take down almost anything. Of course an enlightened soldier of compassion would never kill a thing, only stun or tranquilize them.
The space ranger will protect all living creatures big and small. From the words of the famous grandfather of rangers... "With great power comes great compassion" -Billy Ranger '2332. It’s a dangerous quest but the space rangers are definitely up to the task.

-end

dur23 : thanks manz! The bird is coming back i promise...:)

wiz: hey thanks wiz, good to here from you!!

jampoz : Thanks again for the kind words jampoz!!...I've revise the story here...should answer more questions about his gear and personality .

Hey Fetus ,
after your rigging tests and animation blending trials,
you have to map the model, is it right?

if yes, after the mapping ...do you need to rig again or you are able to save the weight maps??

The exporting maps doesn't work....for me, of course.....but
i dunno what I miss

fetus that is really nice design, i think the hands need more defination. i think they look really flat. also did you weld him? im not sure what app your using. but the face like on the lips it looks like the vertices are not merged.

Looking great once again. Right now i cant think of any accessories to add, i think the eye peice idea would be awesome, make it fold out the side, i would go with that if i were you. My only crit though is, his back pack, on the top there is that thing that expands out over the back, kind of like a visor for what is below it, but to me if this dude is a ranger it seems a little clunky for him, what if he rolls or tries to go under or into things that things is going to get in the way. Just a thought, but i love the work. And hey i noticed you use maya, and so do I, what are you using to do those great model renders, i have been trying to do that. is it mental ray or what. Anyways an talk to you later. peace

Some replies...

cutnpaste :: Still not sure about the textures but the weights were very minimal to paint so going back a step is no problem. I havn't tried exporting my weight maps but i'm sure its possible.

teyon :: hahaha!! Walking into a wall would be a great animation, while singing of course. Thanks for the kind words teyon!

M@ :: :D

Levitateme :: Your right about the face being not merged. Sewed that up and everything else. Also the hands do need something for the top, working on that now. Thanks for the crits levitateme.

katon :: Thanks alot for the kind words katon!! Your right, it is mental ray and final gather at work here. I agree about the eye peice, It would look cool....gotta get to work on his small but important sidekick first. The backpack "flap" was intened to rotate down to act as a cover. Kinda forgot about it so thanks for bringing it up! Think I'll add some wheels or hydrolics to show that feature. Again, thanks for the post katon!!

Virtuoso :: Great job in the challenge and thank you for your kind words!!!

Kingmob :: Ohhh a ship...dont temped me!!..Thanks for the post mr. mob!!

dur23 :: Wake me up if i do that again!!

That backpack design thing you got going has great form and rythmn.

You really have it DOWN PACK.

Keep doing the stupendous stuff.

Thanks for all the WIP post too. Gives me a better understanding of the amount of depth or history needed to achieve such stylization.
