View Full Version : Mirroring manual Skin Weights?
iliketrees 02-23-2009, 01:15 PM Hi Im skinning a character in 3dsmax2009, and manually weighted one of the arms and want to mirror those selected weighted vertices to the another arm.
Is this possible?????????????? (without mirroring one entire side to the other)
Thanks!

Read the help and just have a look at the buttons that are available to you. There is one called mirror selected verts.

hi paul, :wavey:
Thanks for the reply (wasn't sure I was gona get one)
I did have a good look at all the tabs under the skin modifier parameters and have looked again but cant see a mirror selected verts option anywhere and the help didnt bring anything up :/ I have the 5 paste options under the mirror mode button - then mirror plane/offset/thresh, display projection and manual update tick-box under that.
Sorry this is real beginner stuff but its just I've never looked into rigging before.
Im following a book by Michele Bousquet which is excellent but wish it went into more detail on some issues or gave refs of other training material to look at.
could you poss give me a push n the right direction? I would be v.v.appreciative!
now might be a good time to say the link for your training dvd didnt work for me, lol
thanks again paul

those paste buttons are what you're looking for. setup your mirror plane so it divides your model as perfect as possible (new to skinning users often tend to have their character mesh pivot NOT at the symmetry center, that's why default mirroring setup doesn't work), when you enable mirror mode, one side should be green, other should be blue. that's when you're ready to push "paste blue to green" and stuff.

Thanks uiron!
Because the mirror was always spliting the character in half I thought all weighted vertices were being copied over which I didnt want but its just a simple case of drawing a marque round the ones you want to be copied then pressing the mirror mode button.
wicked, thanks both of you (paul incl)
thought Id post up some pics of what Im working on, I need some futher training material what could you suggest uiron?

Well you might want to have a look at my DVD series at http://cg-academy.net. I call it a true intermediate DVD series that starts where the Max help files leave off and I show production methods for setting up characters in several ways.
