crew 972 02-22-2009, 05:51 PM Fresh out of the oven. We're still touching up the sound post, but the picture is all there. It starts with the robot short I posted a month ago, but it carries on to other new work.

Very cute reel, I think you have pieces there that could be taken out, stuff after 1:35 min get weaker and weaker, you have strong stuff in the begining and the rest is just not at the same level.
I understand you were following the principles of a good reel but theres a HUGE gap that just doesnt fit. To my humble opinion that is.
3* from me

Very cool of you guys to check out the reel...
The Lemming was a test for a series of short films we developed for Disney. I appreciate teh crit about quality gaps, but the reel also needs to show story and design capabilities for different styles of animation. Maybe they don't all belong on the same reel...
Cool calb - we're neighbours. How come you never visit?
Beers and pool on Thursday, man.

Great reel, I love the humour you guys have in your work. I looked for the word Entertainment on Wikipedia and it gave me a picture of you smiling and holding a Crew972 sign. ;)

The HD version will be downloadable from our website when it's ready. We're currently redesigning it and it will be up by March 8th. I'll let you guys know when it's ready.
I have to point out some major credits here: JP Vine (http://jpvine.com/) developed, designed and directed the Adrenaline Lemmings clip. Menashe Morobuse (http://www.morobuse.com/) designed the CG pipeline, as well as rigged the Lemming. Rafi Ben-Aharon (http://rafiba.wordpress.com/) modeled the critter+all his facial morph targets, Dror Revach (http://www.drorre.co.il/) shaded and lit the project and Ron Ganbar (http://web.me.com/rgb_tv/RonGanbar/Home.html) composited. Nir Ginat animated with me and supervised CGI and Maria Vescan production manager...
Thanks for the love!

Very nice showreel. You must have been working realy hard for this one. I love the main theme song, its from the "Slumdog millionaire", very awesome. The granny and the bump is the killer. I fell down from the chair for that one.
Also think that your site is very unique and interesting.
Keep up the good work!

We use Maya for 3D and Shake for comping. But as you all know, it's not the tools as much as the hands on the wheel...
Big thanks to JP Vine, Ron Ganbar, Menashe Morobuse, Dror Revach, Rafi Ben-Aharon and Nir Ginat for the Lemmings short, and to Shay Goldberg, Oleg Magrisso, Eran Lazar and Daniel Shneor for the Pocketbot piece.

Hey Roberto - with pleasure!
Crew 972 used to be a studio that aimed at producing a particular type of work, based on my experience as an animator at Pixar. The reality of business is that only the handful of major animation studios get to indulge in that quality of work full-time, so over time I found myself diversifying our range to different types of 2D and 3D work that rely more on design and story than multilayered hi-octane computerage. It's amazing how much entertainment you can squeeze out of great design, timing and sound design, so that became my key principles.
In terms of staff, the change in principles means I work with different teams of freelancers on different projects. What ties all this work together is that it has to have clear situations and comical timing to get a laugh. Funny is money!
Thanks again for all the love!

Just saw ur reel and i must say you have done a very fine job. your ideas are funny and entertaining and animation is pretty solid apart from the man in the super store or seomthing where he changed his uniform . i was expecting something more interesting.

Hi Alex, That was really fun to watch!
great reel, and awesome animation.
the robot in the beginning is perfect!
loved the soundtrack combination
thumbs up to all the guys and galls at crew972.

I dont think that's the problem. You can leave the 2d and 3d stuff in there, but as others suggested, just start chopping from the end. I would cut the painting animation, al gore ice, space marine, and whatever that last thing was (I forget).
The rest is good enough to stand on it's own.
Very good animation, action is very beautiful, I very much enjoy

I disagree STRONGLY.
I think that this reel showcases strong skill is a variety of formats.
It gives me as a client an idea that this hous can master ANY style.

I appreciate everyone's opinions and I thank you all for posting.
You guys all reflect the dilemma we had here regarding what to keep and what to leave out, and one thing I found interesting was that my experience of producing the projects and the time that had passed since making some of them skewed my decision making. A lot of nostalgia creeps in when it's time to show people what you do, so I needed someone professional to take over the editorial process who could look at the material objectively.
In the end, when it was all edited as a stand alone work of art, I stopped cringing at work that I felt was "not finished" or just "concept art that didn't go anywhere", and didn't miss that old project that we "built our company on".
That said, I still don't feel the portfolio represents what we can do in terms of diversity and complexity, and now I know what to pull out next time we sit down to edit the show reel.

Hi Alex!
Nice to see you getting front page on this site, The reel is awesome! Good editing and sound design. The best thing about this reel is the quality and diversity, which comes as a result of working with some of the most talented CG artists in Israel, in different constellations. This is proof that good casting makes all the difference, and you got the gift my man!
My favorite bit is the lemming one, and I can't wait for a longer version! (Only please keep the gags a side dish and not the main one, although I'm sure the point is SHARP and CLEAR, as opposed to... Ah, wonder if someone gets it...)
Cheers! See you at the Purim party?

Thanks, David, for your compliments and insight. Casting has a lot to do with success and there's no doubt I got to work with some marvelous artists in the last four years. I should also point out Snowball vfx for the awesome CGI art they produced for us on a number of clips on our reel, including 2006 FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola and Y&R Danone Actimel. Did I miss anything?
BTW - I will be on a plane to LA during Purim . Next opportunity!
Cheers,
Alex

So there is snowball and crew 972 in Tel Aviv? Are there even more? Tel Aviv seems to have a lot of artist studios. I may have to go on a internship there someday. Brush up on my Hebrew too.
I loved the lemming and Al gore on Ice. And whatever that blue dude was at the end, was hilarious.

There's a lot going on here in vfx and animation. It's the West Coast of the Middle-East!

Well there's a long list of contributors to this reel and for me the most significant realization is that diversity wasn't at the cost of quality. I believe I can safely say that everyone who took part in those projects is satisfied with the result, which isn't always the case.
I hope to see bigger and richer projects at your path.
