Title: Cloud FF7 Crisis Core
Name: Cindy Quach
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop
He's supposed to be crying at the end of the game, if anyone's ever played it here... I've been practicing portrait painting for a lot lately and I really like the way this came out. Critiques most welcomed! Any tips on improving would be great!

I agree with Phoenix. The subtle color variation is very interesting. Nicely done.
thanks do you guys have any tips? i was using the hard brush with some opacity settings and I think a soft brush would give me a more realistic look but I'd like to hear your thoughts

I'm hesitant to give advice, as a layman, but I'd say your shapes look spot on, as far as anatomy and proportions go.
As for painting technique, everyone does it differently. In general I'd say start with a nice big image, or start small like this, and then after the initial sketch, re-size it until it's larger, then do detail work.
Softer brushes can help, and oddly shaped brushes with a bit of jitter can also add a lot of depth and texture.
A method I used to use that works particularly good with comic-book style coloring is to use the Lasso tool to create custom-shaped selections, and then go over them with an extremely low-opacity airbrush. It's quick and effective, hard edges can be softened with a blur or smear brush, and as long as the image-size is large enough there wont be any pixely lines in the final product.
I'd also recommend giving Painter a try some time. Painter and Photoshop are very different programs, and sometimes one will suit a person better than another. Having both is the best though.
