Hey guys,

Im new to maya, modeled for 2 years in max and one year in lightwave, now im into maya.

in lightwave you got a tool called 'bandsaw' it's used to split up your polygons.

Maya gots the split polygon tool but you cant split straight lines with it, unless you do it reaaalll carefull.

i was wondering how you guys do this in maya without any plugin's cause i hate plugins..... i mean maya has to have a tool or set of tools to do this ?

thanks for the help,

Okay i've found one way to do it......

But there has to be a better way to do this.....

here's what i do...
Select the edges you want to split, klick subdivide, now maya
creates a vertex in the middle of your edge so now youve got a centred point for your split polygon tool .....get it :D

But what if you want your edge to split op at 75% and not on 50% ?!?!?!?

anyone ?

Well you can place the first vert precisely by watching the helpline for the percentage you want, and you can dolly in towards the vert to get more precise control. Then place the second vert more or less where you want it. Then after you complete using the split tool, just move the second vert along the axis you want to using snap with the first vert, that way it'll be aligned. Depending on the way they are oriented, you might have to adjust the translate gizmo though. Why do you want them exact? I usually just eyeball it.

try looking in the options for the split poly tool. There is an option called snapping magnets try it out.

What a novel idea... looking at the tools options.... :wip:

Wait... Why on Earth would you subdivide the edge to get the new edges vertex starting at 50%? The split poly tool generally snaps to 50% pretty well depending on how close you are in the view, and it tells you where you're at in percentages in the helpline anyway. Maybe I misread what you are trying to do?

Galo, I too am a LW guy moving to Maya...

The only thing I have found is as posted above...

subdivide the selected polys, then merge verts...

frustratin' isn't it...

Hey guys, AJE why did you go to maya ?

I did it cause i wanted to work with all three programs max, lw, and Maya, i still were more confortable with LW but yesterday i managed to work in maya just like in LW.

so i made this :)

Hey,

I am learning Maya because I find the animation capabilities for organics is so much more compliant... LW always fought with me when I was rigging...

Plus, I find that Maya is better for textures....

All in all, I have wanted to learn Maya since its first incarnation. LW will never be far from my workstation though. It's a really strong package... and I'm still very much a Newtek fan.

Knowing both will only help in the long run... and LW models import perfectly into Maya.

Galo, you say you don't want to use plugins. However, Maya is so modular from the outset that the whole thing is basically built like a collection of plugins. The poly powertools download from the Maya community section on the Alias site includes three polytools that when loaded, you wouldn't be able to tell that they aren't part of the original app.
Coincidentally, ;) they include a splitting tool that can cut straight lines through any poly object :)

You owe it to yourself to check it out... as if you do a lot of straight cuts like that it will actually save you some time.

I am having the same problem here in Maya. I used to be a Max user and I started learning Maya a year ago. In Max I can add a "Slice" modifier and which can split the polygon with a solid straight cut just like what LW does. But I can only use the Split Poly tool in Maya and hopfully my eyeballing is accurate.
I also found a plugin to do that at:
http://www.highend3d.com/maya/plugins/?group=mayaplugins&section=polygon

but this verson is old and its for Maya 2.0, so can't use it

Is there anyone has an idea to do "Slice" polygon in an efficient way? Thanks
