Hi Felix :)
A RUBENS... ALWAYS a nice start to a sketchbook
You might start with a blackish purple background when doing these master copies...It's just closer to the way the masters worked when developing their paintings...A dark golden brownish color most of the time in RUBENS case.
When doing a study, the point is to learn, and not to just copy for the sake of copying, thinking that it will somehow magically transform you into a master if you copy enough masters works.
A good way to study at first, is to pick a piece of the painting that you intend to study from, ..say a hand or foot for instance,..or maybe a piece of the torso or hip..some part that you don't understand at all, and then do an inlarged section study of that one area only..doing lots of studies of it, until you understand it completely...Then move on to a different area, and do the same thing with that area..
As you use this approach to studying and learning, you will start to see underlying boney structure, which is the foundation from which the surface of the muscle and skin are created upon..This observation will in turn lead you to the study of bones and how they work in the human form...where and how the muscles attach to them, and how they relate to each other when the figure is in action or repose.
Without a solid understanding of the underlying foundation/bone, it is impossible to build a structure upon it.:)
Looking forward to seeing where your studies lead you to..:)
TAKE CARE

Hello Glenn :)
It's nice to hear comments from and I will do what you say about zooming in and study particular body parts of master paintings. I'm still learning digital painting and to me value painting is pretty difficult for me, as I used to draw from lines, and I know that mastering the light and dark from master composition will surely help me. And yes, I think you do notice that I am not too good at anatomy, boney structure and muscle structure, I will try my best to learn from the masters, thanks for the tips, I will use it to become a better artist :)
