...just got afterburn thinking that it' s volumetrics would render in Vray. I'm hoping that I'm just missing something in the settings of both plugs. The clouds render black, no matter what I do to the settings of each. Tutorials make no mention of vray. I fear the answer.:banghead:

(just guessing here)... Do you have any lights in your scene? And are they in the afterburn list?

You could always try a standard direct light. I don't use afterburn, but try and see if that works.

I'm praying for you man :P

Yeah, i'm pretty sure a vray sun wouldn't work too.

no vray sun probably wont work, you will need a direct light with either AB shadows, or shadow map (i think you might be able to user vray shadows).

Afterburn and other MAX plugins use the MAX API for any shader calls. When a renderer deviates from that API (ie Mental Ray) then it cannot evaluate the shade context properly and therefor determine the proper pixel color. However, most plugin renderers for MAX, such as Brazil and VRay still reference the MAX API, though they can also use their own. For this reason you should still be able to use MAX plugins in your renders. There is however a caveat: there's no guarantee that any renderer-specific tools (special lights, materials, etc) will work properly with other plugins.

Just keep that in mind.

Quote from the Chaos forum:

Switching to a VRay shadow will not work with Afterburn BUT switching to a VRay shadow and selecting Atmosphere Shadows On under Shadow Parameters will shade the Afterburn volumetric exactly like an Afterburn Raytraced Shadow AND will render frames properly.
