in painter 8 there is a nice window were i can mix colors, to get colors topaint with. i thought i read you can do this in PS. any ideas?

Kind of yes and kind of no. You can create a new layer in your working document to act as a mixing palette. Or you can create a whole new document for mixing colours.

Should give you plenty to play with.
Also, if you use the Smudge tool to mix colours, turn Spacing off.
