That's personal.

I have more time to devote myself to that image tomorrow, then I will finish anyway.

Missed more medals and setting the curtains and pointed out by Derricksong, thanx man, but that's it.

alea jact est.

DerrickSong, sorry man, i don't have time to make a adjustments in background, but in next time i more pay attetion. thanx for show me this.

Ferx, the track. no qhat i want but the track possible make in time.

ektho, Now s final, is still to see if you like. I have changed a little but trying to do better.

NavigatorJones, I wanted to try something like a living dead, but cooled too much to see that image, I chose something that was not necessarily a red or something close to a common skin tone.

The purple one I remembered when I saw the same placenta placenta where my son was born ... I found a good memory especially with the details that gave the skin.

trying to leave more different.
I hope you enjoyed.

and all... welcome c/c.
see ya!

Sadrack - Think you have much "air" over your character, perhaps you need to enlarge your canvas to down and put more legs part on the image. The pose is really great ( Creo que debes extender la imagen hacia abajo y que se vean mas piernas , o recorta un poco el cielo, o puedes hacer mas grande el tocado, con algunas plumas verticales para ocupar mas ese espacio :) )

Lostpencil - cool concept, I liked a lot :D

Powerzuul - really funny and cool idea, great general :D

Iban - great update, simply awesome details on your image, great!

Everybody are working great!! ( promise more comments on the next post :))

IM FINALLY FINISHED!! Great work everyone, and good luck to you all!!

A little back story: General Edmond Kayne was one of the most decorated and ruthless war mongers in history. When a devastating defeat claimed his life, his unquenchable blood lust and hatred made him the perfect candidate to command the armies of hell in his gruesome afterlife.

Please let me know what you think!

hi

end for today, finish tomorrow.

ferx: maybe like this?, the color of your image are realy good, some minor anatomic fix in the hand to take the sword to see volume in there, i see some flat ( solo una sugerencia por lo ancho del pomo de la espada ), the character spoke man, very alive.

powerzuul: man your image rock, good use of color i like a lot the style, very clean finish.

Attached to the role of autobiography:

Legend in the Ancient Near East, there is a twin tower, the locals call it evil tower. This tower engulfed around perennial organisms, making a radius of hundreds of years people have not. But one day, when after a monster here, the evil tower suddenly changed, only one split into two towers, located in the monster's shoulders, forming his combat gear. The tower of evil for thousands of years of energy savings him instantly into the body. Since then, the monster with the name: Evil Eye.
It was not clear who in the end are evil tower control him, or him win the support of the evil tower, but there is one thing to determine, from the Evil Eye has control of the forces of nature!

Hope you enjoy it.

here's the final of my general...

General Papapalupalu... a Philippine inspired war general... hailing from the mountains of Palu-palu... Representing the tribe of Ah-ling Mil'ing... Once a festive tribe, until one day when another tribe ravaged their land and their people... Gen. Papapalupalu led his warriors to exact revenge against their rival tribe, the tribe of Man-ong Bah-dong... Upto this day the name of Gen. Papapalupalu is feared by people who try to oppose the Ah-ling Mil'ing tribe.... (fictional story... lol :))

I decided to put a really cheesy frame around it, which maybe stands on the nightstand of his proud mommy...:-D

I also decided to call him Junior, it seemed to fit him! :-)

What else...I decided to put the logo on his collar + on his hat, and also put a grain over the portrait to make it look a bit more 'worn'. I did have to rush the frame a bit, but I wanted it in there, as I thought it would add to the whole 'mommy is proud' backstory....:P

All comments welcome, and good luck to everyone still fighting the deadline! Hang in there, you are almost there! :-p

1 A.M. here, gotta catch some sleep now...at last! :-p

Studiomonkey: Great work on the face. Love the tones. The jacket textures seems a bit to 'overlayed', there should be some deformations where the bends and folds are.

rhemrev: Great humor and concept on this.

Klozz: Push your lights and shadows, don't be afraid of showing some brushwork. Potential is there for greatness.

jhaeffner: Nice to see Lost hasn't killed your General! The sword seems a bit disjointed, I would somehow compose it closer to the General. Looking forward to seeing it complete.

Gyorkland: Hell, that was fast. Nice work.

waracle: Tighten things up. Keep pushing it.

naito: Nice work.

Ataulfo: Great work on the face. I'd like to see more complimentary colors, but the color scheme you have works well.

Airflow: Not sure if I would call it done just yet. There is plenty more you can do.

@ Bluntpencil: Would u mind telling me how you rendered/painted the left shoulder of your General? The shoulder with the animal fur armor. I'm kinda new at digital painting (same for analog) and having some issues choosing brushes and certain techniques when it comes to hair/fur... thnx.

Certainly. I painted it with a custom brush I made in Painter, based off one of the Oil Pastel brushes, but altered a bit to fit my tastes. Then I more or less just built up the shape and added lots and lots of tufts of hair. When I considered the image done, it all got a smattering of textures on top, just to make stuff *pop* a little more.

Jushra: Thanx man, I enjoyed making it! :)

Ikpo: Not sure if I'm looking at an animal or a tree-man....but cool nonetheless! :-)

Didde: You managed to put in quite alot of work in your painting since last time I saw it, it came out pretty cool! AND you got a frame too! :-D Frames rule! :-P

Klozz: Interesting style, looks still very clean though?

Bluntpencil: So cool that you made it a bit more 'gritty', as your last version was quite digital looking.....readability of both the master and the pet's head has greatly improved aswell! Nice!

Zuczus: MORE FOREHEAD! MORE FOREHEAD! :-D Cool stuff, hope you'll be able to finish it!

Staticpen: very nice and subtle entry, I like it.

Sadrack: I like the insects man! But somehow your image feels stretched in witdth, i'd be curious to see what would happen if you squashed it a bit...:P

Solblomma: almost looksl ike a movieposter! It's one weird dude! :-p

Good luck everyone!

My Final Image.

It came down to the line and I had to stop detailing it. I think it came out pretty cool and I've learned a good deal.

The Child General, War General Parvula:
Young she may appear but merciless is this mastermind. Since birth, she has caused fear from her dark well of knowledge. She was genetically engineered to retain the knowledge of many great leaders and conquerors. An unexpected side effect from the engineering has given her mind terrifying telepathic powers. With this augmented talent, she can command and create the most devoted legions and dominate the greatest of enemies. With each day her power and knowledge grows. Those that know of her cower to think of her vile potential.

yeah yeah..i know..i'm doing this *backwards* I DID already post my final image to both this thread and gameartisan......but here are some WIP's anyway. one issue i'm having is getting my images to post in the body of the Post. oh well. Anyway...Wip images include my original sketch, which seems kind of awkward to me now...I'm glad I changed it in the painting. The other two show my basic paint layers, and beginning to incorporate the logo into the helm.

My overall idea for this concept was to take the CG Society logo the centerpiece. The dragonesque form of my character therefore came from the serpents in the center of the logo. I tried to 'halo' the rest of the design around him, incorporating it as the helmet. Hope it works.

Hi just posting my final image on the thread.

I did finish it on time and submitted it to DW but was just too shattered to post it here.

Okmer - Amazing general. I love the lines in the background. How do you do stuff like that?

Reklas - Great final submission even though you changed your concept the final image is really cool.

Ferx - Great work on bringing that character to life. Thanks for all your constant feed back for everyone on the forum "Muchas gracias."

Looking at my final image I think the design got too cluttered and I just couldn't render a good metalic look for the Armour. There are somethings that I am just too used to doing with lines. I need to learn how to make hair and sharp edges for metal.

Looking forward to see you all in the next challenge.

Here's the story of amelia the mermaid. a long long time ago, a beautiful mermaid called amelia had deeply fallen in love with a young pirate. he promised to marry amelia, and for that, she became a human. but she was betrayed. deeply heartbroken, wandering amelia had reached the seacoast one day, there she was picked up by the naval fleet patroling the shore to hunt pirates. she decided to taker her revenge... she decided to catch the pirate she loved. with her beauty and intelligence, she soon became a naval general. but as she got stronger, more she got used to the human world, she realised the cruelty of the human world. but she cannot return, she cannot return to where she came from, for her broken heart is now rusted away with cogs and metal.

Congrats all! I hope our team wins! (we totally will! XD)

Anyone know how the voting starts? Do WE get to vote? Because its the 5th for me already, but I just went to the site and I see no way of voting, though it does have a 'submit vote' button...any ideas? Or perhaps they haven't set it up for voting yet? Also, Heavyness, if you're reading this, can we vote for multiple pictures or only the one??

Cheers mate

Goodluck everyone! Fantastic job! :D

- Public voting starts Thursday March 5th to March 8th to find each team's best 5. Each team’s best 5 entries then gather together into a single pool and a grand mini champion chosen and announced with all other Dominance War IV event champions in June.

so check the DWIV site tomorrow.

Sorry for the flood of images here. I finally got some time tonight to start (and finish) my entry. I wanted to create a demon-general with his little pet. It was pretty quick, but I think it turned out well.

Basically, I sketched it out, blocked in the shapes, added base values, color overlays, and then finer details and such.

Enjoy...

Argh, we have to vote for 1st through 5th place? Why can't we just pick 5? It's hard enough to choose only 5. But to have to pick an order for them too? >_< *sigh*

And I wish it would take you to a page that says "thank you for your vote" or something so that we know for sure it went through...

[Edit]
Never mind. Reloading the page after voting, the drop-down menus have disappeared. So I guess mine registered!

How to people know where to go to vote? Has there been some announcement that I missed? The DW home page says the contest is still ongoing (although it has the close date of 2nd March). It's so weird how people know these things...

rhemrev; I thought the same thing when I first saw that image, I actually thought it was a joke, but apparently he was serious. Izuael did say his image was a comedic portrait of his teacher or something, so maybe he through in your photo idea to add to the humor, I don't know...On the other hand, just imagine how many spin-offs we will see in the main challenge. That's the only reason why it sucks to show WIP's. Many 'original' ideas will be copied, unfortunately.

Congratulations to all those that presented their works,

I believe that although 2 works have the same source of inspiration never are going to be equal in the end, off course are possible to be made damage because they kill the originality.

hi

rhemrev: My commentary was not your case, jeje I believe you are right since the use of something yours so as without your consent is no good, i guess is a joke.

I comment it but generally for the similarity of certain ideas, the reality that all we are influenced by the TV, cinema, comics, etc… the ideas can be similar, are 4 images with natives( one is mine), 4 or more with generals of the confederation, 20 to monster, etc, but each one are particular, who put the firts monster have the exclusivity of this kind of image?.

I believe that development WIP is super positive since it forces to you expose the evolution of your work, you can see it like a limitation or as a benefit , for the commentaries,critics,etc.. the true is I had few only, but help me a lot, every one sees it by different way.

Woah take it easy man. I didn't do it on purpose. I'm sorry.
I intended to add a photo off another teacher a long time, but there wasn't much room anywhere except in the hat, which I regret I did when I saw yours. And yes, it's a joke painting with inside jokes from school, I didn't plan on winning so I just wanted to do something silly and have fun.
Stuff like this happens all the time, don't have to go after me with pitchforks and torches like I'm Frankenstein...

As some of the other guys already mentioned, when hundreds of people are drawing the same topic, it is bound to result in some similar entries, ideas and spinoffs.

So let's not dwell on this anymore, and start votinggg! :D

I still have 4 more forums to vote for, just so many good stuff to choose from! :D

Ferx - judging was real tricky and believe it or not, even using the dark side of the force couldn't get me all my own way when it came to the winners, despite what Paperclip says :D Too many damn good artists around nowadays, what's the world coming to..?

Paperclip, I guess the theme is always game related so it's pretty much a new way of working for me. I think that last one had loads of mandatory stages, like concept thumbs, WIPs, character profiles (you know, side view, front view) as well as the final image. Will be interesting...

That'll be a new one for me as well, should be fun. I like the idea of rendering the same character from different views, we'll be able to include a lot more in it! I'm going to look at the previous wars to see what's expected.

P.s-always wondered if the judges ever had anyone bribing them? Although I'm not quite sure how that would work over email, but after all using the force you'd be able to feel the presents.:D

Simon, you never got your IFX subscription? I got mine, after pestering Claire Howlett (IFX's editor) about it. And I did pester on your behalf: I specifically mentioned how they had this nice little article about you and I winning the challenge and we both still hadn't received our subscriptions yet. So I'm disappointed to learn that my prodding was in the end only half successful. Give Claire a ping... and if you don't have her contact info, PM me and I'll give it to you.

Thanks for campaigning on my behalf, Mike, that's much appreciated! I'm genuinely glad it paid off in your case :)

My thinking now is that IFX's reluctance to honour their commitments leaves a pretty bad taste so I don't think I'll chase it up further. Notwithstanding that it's a legal contract I'd hoped some good will would have figured but still, all in the past now.

Oh, and BTW I was checking out Dominance Wars site and I saw your artwork up there in pride of place - the eel dude and his octopus. Excellent! I may give this DW a try so hopefully I'll see you there (or here, or however it works).

Hey, Simon! Completely up to you if you don't want to pursue it. Myself, I love the magazine and my personal subscription ended, so I figured I'd bug them for my free copies because I was going to be getting the mag anyhow. I tend to ascribe the lack of follow-through not on company-wide refusal to honor a contract and more just personal "oops it slipped through the cracks because it's not any particular person's responsibility." Still, i know it's annoying: I had an even worse problem with getting my copy of Manga Studio 3 from E-on from 4 Challenges ago - it took close to 8 months! But it turned out, it had fallen through the cracks because the person responsible lef the company, blah blah blah. Still, if you're bothered by it (and you should be!) you could ask the folks here at CGSociety (Like Scott Stahey, maybe?) to follow up for you. Or not.

Back on topic, yes, I placed last year with the CGSociety "team." This year, I'm going to be playing for team 'Game Artisans' because I've been really active over there in the past 6 months. It was a really tough choice and I'll miss folks here... but I also don't really care that much about "teams" anyhow because the awards all celebrate individual achivement, so I'll probably drop in here and there, if people don't mind my being around. (And people are welcome to check out my thread for DW over there, too!) I'll be entering the main event for 2D again this year, but to change things up, I did my mini-comp entry (http://www.drawingboard.org/blogs/walrus/) in the 3D division. Some great work over here, in both 2D and 3D, and looking forward to seeing you all for the big challenge... good luck, all!

Cheers, Mike, good advice, you're probably right! Sometimes I have an artistic temperament (although others may call it differently ;) )

Looks like I'll have to keep an eye on the Game Artisans forum, then! I'm embarrassed to admit I'd never heard of Game Artisans - or Dominance Wars - until I saw this mini challenge. I need to get out more! I reckon it will be interesting, though, and like you I'm not fussed about the team aspect as long as it's a good laugh. Good luck to you too - and to everyone else - and may the best man - woman - team - whatever - win! :)

That's exactly where I was last year: I hadn't heard of GA 'til I did Dominance War 3, and even then, I didn't spend any time there after the war was over. But when I was unemployed last fall, I wandered over there, found they had some great mini-comps (they do them all the time over there) and started participating in earnest. it's been a lot of fun, and it's especially helped me to expand my 3D texturing skills (but yes, I still do 2D work too!)

Hey Theresa,
cool quote and cool song :D

About the question : When DW IV begins, everyone will need to open a thread to post the progress and updates, under a general thread for DW IV, here on CGsociety forum. For this challenge don't be a submision system like on CGSociety's challenges. You put images from your server or other image services, like we did in this minichallenge. When you finish your concept (concept sheet, model sheet and image [this is for 2D challenge] ) you submit your images via gameartisans DW submision system ( like in the minichallenge). Thats all... I hope :D

Thanks

Sorry I didn't mean to confuse . . .

When each Dominance War IV mini challenge is complete and public voting has ended, the best artists from each team moves into the finals. The amount of artists sent from each team is determined by the total amount of participants on each team. If a team has more then 20 participants, their best 3 artists move into the finals. For every 15 participants over 20 (4 at 35, 5 at 50, 6 at 65, 7 at 80, 8 at 95 etc) an additional artist moves into the finals.

This part, the announcement of the finalists. Once the finalists are decided then one lucky winner will be announced the mini-champ in June.

Like I said, just curious to see who made it. Judging was very difficult.
Thanks
