View Full Version : DWIV - Mini Challenge #1 - War General Portraits 3D
ptownsimon 03-02-2009, 12:33 PM Damn, don't think I'll make the deadline with the quality I'd want. Everyone's work is looking great! Too many good ones to comment on them all.
Here's WIP 03, but I ran into problems over the weekend. My previous WIP was lost due to file corruption (exploded mesh). So I had to redo work. Then I decided to give the UVs a look before I went any further with the sculpt. Had a lot of "fun" dealing with Maya's OBJ export and point orders... Then just tonight after working on it for a bit, lost about 3 hours of work to a corrupted save. LOL...
My respect goes out to all artists who have developed effective and efficient workflows and know the tools well. :)
Still got a lot to learn about ZBrush workflows, but I'm glad for the experience and picking up better preventive care habits every time. Thank goodness there's a short break before the epic challenge. I'm still going to finish this piece up. :) Can't wait to see all the final images!

Wow! some very nice work here guys!
I'm afraid I see a lot of entries that will be disqualified though. :(
You have to bake back down to the provided base mesh for the final and can't edit the topology.

Bobo could you please explain in more detail? I am not 100% what you mean and I am concerned mine will be disqualified.
Do you mean however the basemesh, however slight, was altered to generate the normal map. The final normal map must adear to the original mesh with no alterations (except UV) no slight vert/poly move to help your entry fit the form of your normal map better?
If so then, please correct me if im wrong, cgtalk and game artisans rules differ slightly:
GA - Zbrushers and Normal Mappers: you can push/pull verts for the purposes of generating a normal map, but be careful--you must bake that normal map back onto the unaltered (except for UVs) basemesh, and if you push it too far you'll run into trouble. No extra geo should be added to the base mesh.
CGT - Zbrushers/Mudboxers: you can push verts but the overall silhouette must stay intact and no extra geo should be added to the base mesh.
CGT allows you to slightly move some verts as long as the overall silhouette remains, GA does not.
Cheers!

Hey guys, guess I didn't post much in a little while, since I'm all done now. So here's some more WIP images, and then my final render. Hope ya like it.
http://m-cub3d.com/wp-content/gallery/dominance-war-iv/general_sculpt_old.jpg
This the sculpted high poly version at an earlier stage. I later changed some design elements to make it look more interesting.
http://m-cub3d.com/wp-content/gallery/dominance-war-iv/general_sculpt.jpg
This was the final sculpt. I think it was around 2.5M polys. It was then exported out as a normal map using a combination of Mudbox, Xnormal, and combining maps together in photoshop to make the one 1024X normal map.
http://m-cub3d.com/wp-content/gallery/dominance-war-iv/general_maps.jpg
These are the three maps that I used. Diffuse and Specular were made in photoshop.
http://m-cub3d.com/wp-content/gallery/dominance-war-iv/general_sides.jpg
The three sides of the final object with all the maps in place. The hose, hose box, helmet, and the flag that I added later all add up to 442 tris, so well under the 500 tri limit.
http://m-cub3d.com/wp-content/gallery/dominance-war-iv/general_final_web.jpg
And lastly the final image. I really like a lot of the models that I saw here, especially Zeoyn's. Really nice design there imo. And RaresH had a really cool idea there by turning the mesh upside down.
All in all I had a lot of fun, and can't wait for the main challenge to start!
Good luck everyone!

Wow! some very nice work here guys!
I'm afraid I see a lot of entries that will be disqualified though. :(
You have to bake back down to the provided base mesh for the final and can't edit the topology.
- BoBo
I don't think that would be very fair - to defend my work and all.
I followed what was said in the brief on this thread. In fact, I referred to it often, to make sure I was in the clear.
I also put in a tonne of work into this, and the most difficult part was getting decent normals without a re-topology. I totally would've rebuilt the mouth area, instead of (as you can see in my works in progress shots) continually shortening the teeth to make the bake work.
There was also no indication - despite posting regularly - that I was doing anything wrong, until I had finished painting all of my diffuse.
- You are allowed to alter the uvs of the base mesh.
- Zbrushers/Mudboxers: you can push verts but the overall silhouette must stay intact and no extra geo should be added to the base mesh.
Once you are finished with colors and details, you can then pose the head and alter its expression for your final presentation.
The fact that the brief was different on another forum isn't my fault, and I shouldn't be punished for it.
Sorry if the tone of my post is strong, but I'm a little upset to maybe be disqualified on this.

Ok here is my final... it's 4am here, I'm kind of glad the time zone are in my favor this time, even though it'll be another story at work tomorrow :D
Anyway, here it is, the lighting and shaders could be better, but I had to quickly revert to max after 2 years whithout using it since I couldn't get the normal map to act nicely in Maya T_T

Dargon (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=24430) mate i shouldnt worry, Your mesh dosnt look like its been retoped and youve respected the rules, youll be fine ^^
some others though :s
I thought that adding teeth and horns with the 500 tri was not ok, from what i understood the 500 tri had to be obviously not part of the same model, so hats etc were ok.
Some people seem to have posted 2d in the 3D sections too wich is unfortunate
the most comon error seems to be the lack of team colors hehe then again i cant see them being too demanding on that count :)
So yeah Dargon theirs no way youll be in trouble, nice work btw ^^
and good work to everyone!

Hey Dargon,
Of course I'm not a judge, but I don't think you have to worry. Since you didn't change the topology and the profile still looks like the base mesh (you just rotated it forward). My guess is that only some verts were tweaked on the head using zbrush/mudbox. That all sounds like it's legit to me.
Plus, your work is amazing. I gotta say it's one of my favorites - total inspo.

i also just wanted to say that there is really a lot of awesome work going on here and i am glad to be in the company of so many great artists. i was hoping to do a bit more on my entry and i am not entirely happy with it. i should have spent another day on it, but "oh well". the experience i gained just from this one little challenge was incredible. as someone who is "relatively" new to 3d (in the great scheme of things), just finally learning about normal maps was a great time. I can;t wait to see what kind of things i am forced to learn in the main challenge!!

I really crunched yesterday, so I had it a bit rushed together in the presentation (note the wrong year...eheheh) but anyway here I have another render...
This experience had been a great warmup and training for the main event. Without a doubt!
I'm glad I had the pleasure to work with all you talented artist on this Mini-Comp :)
cheers

This was a great challenge!
Velesius> I really love the work you have done. The level of detail is amazing and the execution perfect. I think you might have a winner there ;)
StefanoDubay> You had a great concept in your hands. However, I have the feeling that the final part of your work was a little bit too rushed and the presentation sheet doesn't make justice to the quality of your model/idea.
KingstonZ> It's a shame that you didn't use an opacity map for the feathers. Your model has a very cool concept and it's brilliantly executed.

heh, we do what we can, I agree tho tht a strict WIP schedule will be needed for the main challenge, to fit work, party and my girl :) . Since I never did Dom War before I took this as a training, but I do agree with you, some more texture work to get the model done and polished... anyway, 1000x1000 isnt enough, for the big context would be nice to be able to post 3 images, beauty render, rotation and maps/ wireframe snaps.
Ideas are not a problem so this attempt is not a waste in my consideration.
thanks to everybody and Zeoyn for these suggestions! I'll have big use of them leter on!
Hey anybody knows the timeframe for the main challenge?
thanks

This is my 1st time to join an online challenge, it is a great exprience for me, i guess for everyone here too.http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon7.gif. Everyone seriously trying their best to do something , the feeling is really good! is really inspiring and motivated to see so many great artist and great works.
Zeoyn> thanks for your comments. you have a great model and i really like the way you do for your presentation.
- for the opacity map on the feathers, they were there since textureing start http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v647/kinston2/wip11.jpg ,http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon12.gif after i finished textureing , i find the feathers look soft, light and too clean compare to his body and helmet, i give the edges some darker colour and dirt to make them look graphical/angle and heavy - to match the style of heavy, metal, patterns, graphical look of him .http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon7.gif...http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gifhehe
*i think nellement, hhhjun, dragon, velesius they also have a very cool design, great execution, and i really like hhhjun and Zoeyn's presentation background.http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif
Count Smackula/Matthew Novak > thanks for the kind words, i used to be a Zbrush/Zmapper only ( Die hard Zbrush all the way to normal map ) kind of people, but in this mini challenge, production time is short, and i want to spend more time to make good textures for him( texture is the god after concept drawing for game art) , so i make more parts from maya but not sculpting, i need to use any Transfer Maps tool or xnormal to bake, i m really happy to see that the result of the normal map looks great.http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon7.gif
Rares Halmagean> thanks for your comment, your have a very speical idea too, your are really think out of the box.

I got a chance to re-light and cleaned up some my presentation. Wish I had just one extra day to do this in time for submission!

Not only was I late as all hades, but it turned out awful...
Lessons learned though since this IS literally the first time I ever attempted something like this.
