Hello all,

I am very new to matte painting and am just beginning to dabble around a bit. I would really love some feedback on this WIP. Right now I am using Photoshop, 3ds max and Terragen for creation and details. Thanks for any feedback.

I am wondering how best to unify the piece, as it seems as though the background blends well, but the foreground does not, and the buildings also stand out. I am also anticipating the placement of a building in the front left of the image (that open space) that is a more elaborate ornate version of the ones in the distance.

Any suggestions or tips/techniques for completion/improvement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Perhaps try recoloring the buildings, so that they blend in with the distance a little better. Another thing to add is maybe a building closer, with more details.

Yes, the darkest shadow on the building can't be any darker than the darkest shadow on the hill it sits on, since they are the same distance from us. At this angle there would be no cast shadow onto the hill, since it is already in shadow. Having said that, I think your midground hills that the buildings sit on are far too washed out. Also, your foreground is in direct sunlight so it needs to be a lot brighter, and higher contrast.

Hope that helps

Here is a revised image.

I know there is still a lot of work to be done blending the buildings in. I am beginning learn more about channels, an aspect of Photoshop that I have thus far been able to get by with basic knowledge in.

I would really appreciate your continued feedback (it is very helpful :) ).
