Hey guys. New to the forums. Decided to join for a few reasons. 1) Cause there are some freaking sweet artists on here. 2) To kind of network once I get a better portfolio created 3) To improve 4) My teacher recommended I become a forum whore (see reason #1)

So yeah. I'm an animation major (3D) right now. First year. I'm learning Maya. I've been doodling on Photoshop for the past three or so years but I've been drawing since I could walk. I'm trying really hard to work on proportions especially when goofy perspective is involved. I'm taking Life Drawing this semester. It's really helping I think. I'll try to photograph some stuff. It's mostly like 5 minute poses but some turned out pretty good. It's time consuming to take photos and resize and color correct and such so I might wait a while.

In here I'm mostly going to be posting WIPs of things I want to finish. And just random sketches and such. Character ideas. I'd really like to get into concept work for characters and possibly enviroments in the future. Modeling is fun too. But I love to draw. Period. Haha. So yeah.

I'll post some stuff here soon. Feel free to comment, cirtique, confess, command, collab, etc. I can learn a lot from you guys and I'm planning on doing so. :)

Peace.

Here's some stuff from last semester. We had some models come it. It was a Drawing I class so they aren't that great but I'm currently in a Life Drawing class. There has been some pretty cool stuff from that class so far...I just need to photograph them.

This was a 5 minute scribble.

This was a one hour drawing. Done in pen. I shaded the face too dark. Meh.

SO yeah. Just some stuff. About 4 months old. Newer better things to come.

Welcome. :) I recommend to my students to forum whore as well. ;)

I think a great artist and teacher is Anthony Ryder, check out his website at www.tonyryder.com - his book and tutorials on figure drawing are great. In particular I find angle sighting helpful.

Looking forward to seeing your more recent work.

So I finally photographed some of my new stuff. This was the model...last week. She was a fantastic model. I have nothing but good things to say about her. She made her poses dynamic and very real. Not 'Oh i'm a model so I'll pose like this' they were all very natural poses and she was very fun and had some great energy. I didn't feel like charcoal so i grabbed a pen from my bag and went to town.

These go 1 min, 3 min, and 5 min. We also did some tens and one fifteen. I'll get those later. Don't want to overload one post. :)

hi

the gestures in your last post are pretty neat. i like the fluidity. maybe try to make the lines even more fluid, that is definetly the right direction. watch the anatomy though ... its still a lil bit funky. :)

Thanks. I might try some contour drawing next time. Yeah, i try to work fast cause of time, but i often times skew the anatomy. Either too wide, or too long, or something. :/ But I'll work on fluidity and really trying to get anatomy correct. Thanks for the feedback. :)

Hi!
Great sb start.
Do you draw from the wrist?
I'd recommend drawing from the elbow or even from the shoulder if you can.
That and stroke economy will get you to the next level.
My former teacher, who taught me how to see, told me once... 3sec observation, 1 stroke, 3 sec observation, 1 stroke,... try it!

Great start on your sb. I definitely see a lot of potential, you want to make sure when you sketch think of the figure as a whole before laying down any further refinements. You seem to have the same issue I had when I started, where you lay down some ref lines and then go directly for the head to refine it.

On the more cartoony side of things Remember that body language is extremely important. the greatest cartoons tell a story with full body language, not just what's being read in the face.

System404: Thanks for your comments. It's true I tend to roughly get the figure or idea and then never really finish it out. I go for the face and then give up. Haha. I'm trying to make a conscious effort though. :) Yeah, body language and facial features are key. I'm studying a lot on body language. It's tough to make it exaggerated enough to evoke the image but not make it too much or make it stiff. Another thing to work on. Thank you!

Here's a 40 minute speed paint.

So my first project for my modeling class it to design and build a chair. SO. I decided to do a children's chair that's a giant leaf with a ladybug base. The base ladybug antenae go up and make the arm rests and then there is another ladybug on the back and his antanae are going to come around and be little LED lights. It'll be cool. The only thing is that our teacher is making us model in NURBS which is kind of tough. :/ But I've only encountered a few problems thus far. This design is going to change a lot I'm sure but I just wanted to pop something out with Renderman and see. I like the idea.

I know the lighting sucks. I threw like 4 area lights just so I got something. And this sucker isn't textured but I wanted some specular to catch the light. Shemeh. It's more about the model and not the lighting right now. And I still have a few weeks to work on it.

Modeled in maya. Rendered with Pixar's Renderman.

I feel like I'm stuck in the land of static figures. :( It's frustrating. I'm working hard on getting out of it. I can get it pretty fluid and natural with the basic sketch but when I try to refine the character it falls apart and becomes static. Ugh. Any help?

Anywho, here's things I'm working on.

Use light to reinforce the dynamics of the pose.
I know it's easier said than done, but that's a solution.

The last 2 figure paintings lack a dominant light source.
Squint your eyes and look at them. You will notice that the range of used values can improve. This means you need to increase the contrast in areas of interest: brighter highlights and darker shadows.

Good luck, and if it doesn't work right away, keep going ;)

Thanks for those tips! :D I'll try to work on them.

I've been doing a lot of 3D since I'm back in school now. So here's the last 2D thing I've done and some 3D shtuff too... :)

and here's a character I'm working on based off a song. I'm trying to do 2 characters based off of two songs and making them their theme song.

Just a really rough...really rough sketch.
