krembo99 07-02-2003, 09:31 AM In my current i find myself manipulating files made by other persons. i have a small (and quite simple i guess) question.
How can i see what material (name ) is on a selected object (including the sub materials) the easiest and fastes way ? is there any command or icon that i missed ? ?

If you need to see the whole material trre on an object (And, by the way, all materials present on that object) open a material/map browser and set it to "selected" mode.
So, when you select an object, the browser window will display the materials assigned to the object, and if the "Root only" checkbox is not checked, you'll see the sub materials (maps...) as well.

Yes, you can:
*Open the Material/Map Browser
(for example, by pressing the "Get" icon in the MEditor, first from left).
*Set the Mode to "View List and Icons" (second icon on top of the Browser).
*Set the "Browse From" radio button to "Selected"
Start selecting objects in the scene - the material tree of the currently selected object will be displayed in the Browser incl. Name and Class.
(Shameless Plug Ahead!)
For an extra kick, you could install TreeMatoGraph, but it would be definitely slower to browse...

Great guys, i knew it was something simple i was missing....
or just use the eyedropper in the materials browser and click the piece of geometry in question...the advantage of this is that it shifts the focus of the browser to that new material, when if you already have that material in your browser you may find that you are not actually working on the material in question thats been applied but a copy of that...
you can tell if the material has been applied to your selected geometry if the material has little white triangles in the corners of the preview...little grey ones mean its merely applied in your scene....no triangles means although its in the browser its not used...which is why the eyedropper is a better and faster method IMHO
