View Full Version : Video Tutorial: "Painting" Instanced Object into your Blender Scene
kernond 02-19-2009, 12:10 AM This tutorial teaches how to use Blender’s particles system to “paint” instanced objects onto mesh surfaces. Similar to Maya’s “Paint Effects”, though not nearly as powerful, it’s a very nice way to fill a scene with flowers, vegetation, rocks, pebbles, gravel, debris, etc.
There's so much you can do with these techniques! The end of the tutorial includes a timelapse demonstrating a practical application of the techniques.

I hope you find it useful, thanks.

wow kernond, that was really a great tutorial! thank you for that.
i did know that blender's particle system is great, but all this stuff like dupligroups+brush-size etc is really f*cking awesome. thanks!

:V I was kind of hoping this would be about multi billion polys being rendered as if it were 200,000 but this was almost as good XD the next project I work on I'll have to build a library of files to use like this... a very powerful technique indeed and really improves the freedom and creativity of the artist... I love seeing tools like this. however... I hope someone implements comb feature for editing the objects. yes, this is a hint directed towards you guys, blender institute :P
Edit: lol actually it works somewhat for instancing to but then the renderer comprehends the vast ammount of vertexes and crashes rapidly though. I had it running 11million verts in the viewport though in near realtime o.O

Thanks for the comments!
If you need to render a scene with lots of polys then you'll need to break it up into render layers. I got a couple of crashes, as well, due to memory issues. For the scene above, I used the following render layers:
- sky
- trees
- foreground
After breaking the scene up, it rendered with no problems. You also need to make sure that your instanced objects are low-poly enough to not cause memory issues.

Great tute, very logically and clearly explained. Are you going to make another DVD of more advanced techniques?

Thanks. :)
Yeah, I'll be doing some more DVDs. I think I'll wait until version 2.5 has crystallized, though.

so... I tried this today, but when I created a vertex group that the objects belonged to, and tried to attach it to the particle system, it refused to acknowledge it, and when I typed it in the field, it would go blank as soon as I hit enter.

You'll need to create a Group of objects (Ctrl-G, in object mode) or use an individual object.
Also, the name typed into the field must match exactly (case-sensitive).
Hope that helps.

tried to watch your tut but it stopped after the introduction about 1 min?
is this a service only viewable in the USA?
I too asked ton to make the instanced particle objects to be combable but he said it couldnt be done, or better I submited it as a bug in the bug tracker ;) Its good for static obhects like stones etc.

Hmm, it should be viewable from anywhere. There were a couple of others that were having an issue viewing the entire video as well. We (the site's admin and I) thought it might be the size of the file, so I broke the file into seven separate files based on the chapters. I can't imagine what else I can do, but I'll send the admin a message and maybe there's something else he can do.
It might be an issue with his server's bandwidth, so you might try it again later, or download it.
Hope it works out for you! Thanks for checking it out.
EDIT: I just checked it out and it seems to be playing fine. I did notice that it doesn't continue to the next chapter until you click on the chapter's button at the top.
Another EDIT: In the "Practical Application" chapter, I noticed that the buffering was a little bit slower than the playback. It did stop at some point, but I was able to reposition the play head back a little to give the buffering a little bit more breathing room. Everything seemed fine after that.
