so now i'm pretty used to wings3d and have a few models to render. are there some basic tutorials on rendering using the yafray plug-in?

i tinkered around with it but my lighting is either too dark, too light, or at the wrong spot. it's hard to experiment since there's no "preview."

also, what's a good (free) program to use after wings3d to apply textures to the model?

I'm not sure if theres any tuts for rendering with yafray but you might check there forum for tips. and there is a new program called Bagasis thats a Gui for yafray where you can edit things and it has a preview window and you can render from it but I haven't been able to get it to work right and it seemed to take ages to open a file and it didn't show any preview for me my machine might be to slow for it. my renders were pretty dark to I tried the area light and moved it forward on z axis and to the right a little and it seemed to be ok you can adjust the light settings in wings.
If you plan on Uvmapping auto Uv is part of wings and not to hard to figure out heres a good tutorial for uvmapping a body.

Then you can take the map into any paint program then when done apply to the model. If you don't have photoshop or psp you could try Gimp or pixia or Satori. I haven't used satori yet but I heard it's pretty good and it has a multiple undo feature where most you can only undo once and it has layers and alpha channels. you can also use the new snap image feature in wings to apply a texture to selected faces.

Unfortunately it seems that in Windows the WIngs/Yafray combo is more an exercise in frustration than anything else. MHO is that the problem is with Yafray itself. I have also tried the Bagisas GUI and I just can't get it to work either. It could also be a problem with the way Wings exports xml files. No matter what the problem is you are probably just better off using a commercial rendering option. I use Bryce 5 and whilst it's extremely slow the results can be spetacular.
