Imaginative Figure Workshop #002: Post-Apocalyptic Survival Bunny

*2D or 3D*

For this Workshop, I invite you to create a character or narrative scene / illustration with the theme of Post-Apocalyptic Survival Bunny. It's up to you as to whether you want to create concept art or an illustration, be it in 2D or 3D, traditional or digital media.

You can choose to create either just a character, or a character within a scene - in other words, you can do either:

concept art or character sculpt for a single character
concept art or 3D model for a narrative scene
illustration or character sculpt for a single character
illustration or 3D model for a narrative scene
2D or 3D

I would encourage you to write a background story for the character / scene.

Go for QUALITY, not quantity in this piece. Polish this drawing / digital painting up to the best of your abilities!

__

Some General Guidelines (mostly applicable to 2D but can be adapted for 3D):

For those of you with your own process, feel free to ignore this part. But for those of you without a working method, you may find the following guidelines useful:

Part 1: Decide on a concept / narrative and do your Research

Decide whether you are going to create a creature or place the creature/s within a narrative.

Reference Resources:

As always, Google Image (http://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi), Flickr (http://flickr.com/), Pbase (http://www.pbase.com/), and your own books or books are all fair game as reference resources. Just be sure to not directly copy any copyrighted references that you find - you must significantly alter any reference image in order for it to be considered legally yours. Also be sure to look through some of your favorite artists as inspiration. Check through some of your favorite blogs or image sources to get your creative juices flowing.
If you have other resource sites that you would like me to link, please let me know.
Part 2: Ideation

Process:

Create a set of small, rough thumbnails in your sketchbook (traditional or digital) before embarking on any finished piece. Try to convey the mood and atmosphere of the piece before ever adding any details. Think of the light source, the mood which you want to convey and a background story for this morphed self-portrait and creature.
Project Considerations / Criteria:

Be creative! Try to evoke a mood as much as fulfill the "basic" requirements of creating a Post-Apocalyptic Survival Bunny.
Consider a strong sense of lighting / chiarascuro. Look at the work of Caravaggio (http://images.google.com/images?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=caravaggio&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi&oi=property_suggestions&resnum=0&ct=property-revision&cd=1) to get a strong sense of lighting. Note the clarity of the light source and the strong sense of design via lights and darks alone.
Media:

As always you can use the media of your choice - 2D Traditional or Digital.
Feel free to work in Black / White / Grayscale only or in full color.
Part 3: Final Drawing / Digital Painting (or 3D Render)

Once you have nailed down your concept and selected your best thumbnail, work up the linework for your piece and shade / paint it. Post your work here -

PLEASE - NO MORE than 10 total WIP images (including your final image).

I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DELETE POSTS OVER THIS AMOUNT.

Please subscribe to this thread or bookmark it for future reference!

Have fun!

And yep, this bunny has survived the Apocalpyse! Think about what he / she might look like after the fact, what kind of gear he / she might have, what kind of environment it might live in, etc. (if creating a narrative scene). Good luck and hope you'll join in!

Well.. now I have a question.. does the Bunny in Donnie Darko can be considered a post apocalyptic bunny ? In some way he was involved in the end of the world...so in my opinion it could be ;)
Let me knowHeh, sure, feel free to interpret :) - it just has to be clear in your image what's happening. ;)

well gl everyone and hf :DDefinitely do concept sketches! Put all those ideas down on the page, just get 'em out there, then choose the best one or combination thereof. I'd like to see the concepts too for those that choose to do the ideation phase (which I think is good for everyone), though it's not required.

well this is my initial idea ,after trying to set my mind on one idea ive decided to go with my first one and well here it is :
http://i44.tinypic.com/9tmnpl.jpg
lots of work to be done but gotta start somewhere^_^
the story of it:
after the great war betwin the world's nations humanity was destroyed leaving only evidence of it's civilization's past glory.
but as the humens experimented on animals the cages were held in a heavily shielded facility which kept the experiments subjects which were ...the rabbits (ofc >.>) unharmed and as they got outside of the facility (which due to the lack of electricity caused by the explosions which destroyed the power generators thus opening all doors automaticly ) got effected by the radiation in ways the scientists never imagined possible and became smarter ,starting to imitate the behaviour of the humens sorrounding them while held captive....and altouhg rabbits are the dominant race on this planet some habbits cannot be changed thats why theyre still living underground ^_^

the time which this image takes place:
its dawn and as his new day starts this rabbit drinks his coffee smoking his cigarrete and reading the news papper watching the sunrise and getting ready to start his day

i hope i havent gone too far with the things i want to acomplish with this pic but ill try to finish it ^_^

edit: anf great work MichaelZHsee (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=183795) on your image so far ^_^

Wow Michael! You are F A S T :)

One thing I notice is she seems to hold the rabbit in a way that seems unnaturally distant, considering the environment. Perhaps it would add to the drama if she would kling on to her rabbit as if it is the last precious being she has left.
Her facial expression seems a bit too normal too. Perhaps a tear running off her cheek and a bit more sadness?
Just thinking out loud mate... it's quite impressive as it is already!

holy carrot, Michael! That is one awesome and fast entry!

Rebecca or anyone,

what exactly is the difference between an illustration of a character in a scene and a concept for a character in a scene (from the workshop description). I am not that savvy with the technical terms...

Rebecca,

I wasn't too active in the #01 thread recently, is the idea about grading the entries on for this, or for a later one, or cancelled or something? Just wondering if it applies.

And now,

what ON EARTH am I gonna do about that bunny?

varma
02-19-2009, 05:05 PM
Take a photo of yourself and turn it into a monster!
then, take one of the cutest animals on Earth and molest her the worst way possible!
LOL, sounds like themes are softening up "slowly but surely", a few more mini challenges, and I might have a chance to participate!
;)
I tried to model an Orc-like creature once, the more I deformed the mesh, the more it looked like as he was crying/wipping than screaming/threatening; maybe I need to upgrade my computer?!

Michael, awesome~ Love the attitude of both the bunny and the girl. That's definitely toward the realistic side which I'm happy to see someone go in! Can't wait for more!

acb12, haha, cute concept! What I think though it that you might try gathering references so that you have more to go off of in the initial planning stages :) - I like that the bunny is having a coffee and a cig and is just enjoying the view! Hopefully whoever's left after the apocalypse can be so relaxed. ;)

Mu, an illustration is more like a book cover, something that is more finished in terms of execution. A concept piece is mainly done for the purpose of establishing the look of a character or the feel of an environment, it's not meant as a final piece of art necessarily.

Randomly googled example of an illustration:

http://www.animationarchive.org/pics/sunmoon13.jpg

Randomly googled example of concept art for a creature:

Not sure about the grading thing yet, let's wait til the end to decide.

loll thx and first of all its whoever or whatever @_@ and as the rabbits on my pic only became smart after the apocalypse occured (as you can see in the nice and detailed story ive made for that pic -_^)then they have nothing to fear about ^_^ no brain no worries :D
and ive progressed segnificatly with addin details (At least in compared to the original pic) but that right desert area seems abit empty and i dont know what i can add there T_T
ill post a progress pic later on cuz i just dont wanna waste my 10 pics limit ^^

Hi Rebecca,

about concept/illustration:
I think I see - so that means that even a concept with a scene around the character would mean to leave the scene rather vague or reduced, I guess?

I think I'll give that a try...

Rebeccak

about concept/illustration:
I think I see - so that means that even a concept with a scene around the character would mean to leave the scene rather vague or reduced, I guess?Hey Mu, it depends on whether you are doing character or environment concept art.

Example of character concept art (sorry for the large images) - just googled from "character concept art" and "environment concept art":

http://members.shaw.ca/dmandryk/Assets/Images/tutorial_page_warrior_chick.jpg

Example of environment concept art:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc176/blademaster75/Concept%20Art/Bel_Shir_environment.jpg

It's not that you can't have characters within environment concept art, but usually the environment is the focus and the figures are there to represent scale.

You won't be needing to do turnarounds / orthographic views because you're not creating concept art for a game or film. You're basically doing an illustration, with or without a background around a character, unless you choose to focus more on the environment, with the character playing a role within it.

couple hours worth of time, thinking I have some compositional issues to deal with before I really start working on details.. sky feels a touch empty, maybe too much space on the right side. dunno. midground feels iffy and too undefined aswell.

My thought process was that any bunny that survives the apocalypse is going to be heavily irradiated, and thus fun to use for dramatic lighting. :)

mlutz, good to see your post, but you should have been in class - also, be sure to do 10-15 concept / ideation sketches using traditional media only by next Thurs (per your recommendation) ;) - you'll need to get all the details for what's due next Thurs.

Michael, that's looking incredible, I agree and hope others will join too. :) Give 'em time. ;)

_______________________________________________________________

Here's my first post of the PASB. I'm going to add some dead soldiers to really add that post-apocalyptic survival emphasis. About 3 hours so far. Comments and critiques appreciated.

Backstory: Horribly mutated by intense gamma radiation, Mr. Snuggles, a former cosmetics test-case, grew to the size of a moderate condominium building. Along with his increase in stature came a thirst for human blood. In the year 2079, it's not the mutated outlaws you should be weary of... It's Mr. Snuggles!!!

Software: Photoshop CS2
Tablet: Wacom Bamboo

MichaelZHsee - Amazing how fast you work and how well it turned out. The atmosphere is great. Makes a very moody and stark piece.

Michael, amazing work, hard to believe how fast that was executed! Fantastic, hope you'll join in the next one. With 2 weeks, you can bang out a book on the topic perhaps. :D

seanmauney, haha, great start, and I love that the PASB is now your avatar! I like the mood, lighting, and colors, looking forward to seeing where this goes.

acb12, good to see progress, definitely look at landscape reference, there are plenty of pictures of roads disappearing into the distance and cities as well, pbase and flickr are both great sites for reference. Also I'd suggest generalizing things as value shapes, for example I wouldn't suggest trying to paint eath individual building at first, but thinking of them as well as the landscape, sky, hill, everything really as a mass. Google around for some environment concept art or just good black and white photos of landscapes. Here's a good example:

http://fotokunst.as/new_land/road_in_landscape_350.jpg

http://fotokunst.as/new_land/road_in_landscape_350.jpg

From: Google search:

http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=black+and+white+landscape+%2B+road&btnG=Search+Images

Reference is really key!

WyattHarris, haha, hilarious! Maybe we can consider as a topic for the next Workshop, 'sure he survived the apocalypse, but can he dance?' ;)

Hey all,
it's been a while since i did an anatomy thing, but i wanted to focus more on 3d. Speed was too slow then, but i'm ready to give it a try. Here is the starting for the base mesh, and i'm still busy cleaning up the topology and shape.
It's kind of an apocalyptic offspring of a gremlin-bunny marriage.
I'll also attempt my first real sculpting and hope not to get into too much trouble. Still not sure how to do it, cause the osx version of zbrush still is worthless due to bad texture output. So the final peace will probably stay within this app.
cheers and curious to see other works.

hmm well im not sure what im supposed to be seeing on those black and white images @_@
if you could point me to the areas which are wrong i could fix these ^_^
the road is horribly wrong i know that and the city well i think i made a mistake posting a pic in which im in the middle of placing these these cuz i just seperated the buildings into different layers (as you can prob see different colour of building means different layers :D) and forgot to do something with it :D

hmm well im not sure what im supposed to be seeing on those black and white images @_@
if you could point me to the areas which are wrong i could fix these ^_^
the road is horribly wrong i know that and the city well i think i made a mistake posting a pic in which im in the middle of placing these these cuz i just seperated the buildings into different layers (as you can prob see different colour of building means different layers :D) and forgot to do something with it :D
but it could be helpfull and well shorten the amount of time itll take me to finish it by knowing the problematic areas ^_^Heya, basically it's down to value organization - it's always best when starting digital painting to work in grayscale, so you see the value relationships, otherwise we all tend to just get a bunch of color strokes without a sense of cohesive organization in terms of lights and darks. More or less think of any composition as a value puzzle, all of the pieces have to fit together, and a light can't exist without a dark.

Try putting your image into grayscale mode to see what I mean...

Hello all,
This is my first attempt at one of these workshops so please bear with me. Having a little baby in the house, I'm not sure if I'm going to find the time to complete it all, but better something than nothing.

My idea is a kind of anthromorphic African Hare who is a mutant from the nuclear fallout after the apocalypse.

Things to work on:
The legs - I'm still figuring out how to do the digigrade legs.
The face - The more I look at it, the more I think that I am going to give him a completely hare head, making his look very Egyptian god-like.

Any comment or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey there, another nice topic, good progress and sweet concepts here posted,. I have these sketches of what I've been thinking before start to work:

First: Post- Pop corn's Apocalyptic Survival Bunny.( )

Gord-MacDonald, crazy start, heh, going to work this up? :)

Nekomouse, admirable to do this with your responsibilities, I'd suggest just grabbing a bunch of ref to start to put together the figure. Think about axes (shoulder, hips), centerline of the body etc. Also it might be helfpul to photocollage images / ref together first and then to redraw it.

stridiggio, nice to have you join, I can't tell yet what's happening, I might suggest doing a drawing first? It's up to you, but I always think it's helpful to draw things out a little before tackling a big concept.

2nd WIP - still just messing around, decided to make him decidedly more giant:

well thx alot for the guides and guidelines Rebeccak greyscale looks appealing now more then ever befor (didnt like it >.> )
well as there is still alot of work to be done ive decided to turn my image into greyscale (kinda downgrading it abit T_T ) and started working on it to improve it. i think that incompared to the first one and second one its better but still long way to go :D:

Hi folks,

mlutz, I like the contrast, make the bunny more shiny!

Nothingness, that looks pretty promising, not sure about the ears on the back, though...

Rebecca, I can't decide wether your bunny is still cute or already creepy as hell!

so, I took a slightly different approach... it's been on those crazy nights, or, to quote Gene:

These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights
Sometimes days are so hard to survive, a million ways to bury you alive
The sun goes down like a bad bad dream
Youre wound up tight, gotta let off steam

Anyway, I will concentrate on her (concept) and will give her the full value range. The scene I will give a very narrow value range.

We'll see:

Hello again,
Rebeccak: Of course that drawing is very important, I did the homework today  . the previous post was a mini dark fuzzy 'brainstorm', very very fuzzy
But here is wich I'm doing:
2nd WIP; Left: Progress after draw, and Right: Drawing with a ballpen on Paper.

http://i652.photobucket.com/albums/uu249/stridiggiostuffs/nop170AA.jpg

I'm watching entries with a cartoon style and also like human-bunny, I don't know if I'm in the wrong direction overall with the concept.

cheers.

will start to do the values on the figure from here (dark to light, the bg will basically stay in this value range with a bit of folds and stuff...)

Also, I will thicken the ink outline a bit more when I am further down the value work.

ACB12: hey nice concept too!..perhaps needs a bit more contrast for the shadows to get a bit of deep,,also tweak a little the perspective ''just a comment  ''. well is not a missle, (the angle is wrong also) it will be a propulsor machine (in progress :D ) that drives the bunny to the moon, launched before one meteor collides with the Earth. This animal won a raffle among all species on Earth and is the only specie (lucky) to continue the successful life in the universe.

Looking forward,,( :wavey: )

Thank you Rebeccak for your words. You are very kind. I am going to listen to your advice, work in grayscale and put colour later.

Here's my initial version, after some research and playing with the angles some. It's pretty rough at this point, but feedback would be great.

The story:

The hares have been mutated beyond reason, and have destroyed much of the world. One girl has found a rabbit whose blood will allow them to shrink the massive creatures back to normal, if she can get to HQ in time.

To learn as I go, I've also been trying lately to do a very rough solid line art over the top of the rough sketch. Then if the lineart makes sense, breaking it down to the simplest ideas, I might be on the right track.

On this one, I need to figure out if the girl should be holding the rabbit with one arm or really grasping it in both.

RussellDickerson- thats a rly nice concept and im looking forward to see how yull work this up :D and i think that in this situation she will be likely to hold it with both of her arms(maybe squeezing it abit :D) cuz she will grasp to anything she has cuz shes terriffied of seeing that giant rabbit :D

stridiggio- thx and i was working on that one since i posted the image and about the perspective ill see what i can do cuz i made a mistake and befor fixing all of the probs on the pic when i had the layers of everything ive changed it to greyscale and ended up with 1 layer which ive worked on .so i wont be going back to befor i made the progress...well ill think of how to work this out :D

acb12, looking a lot more solid! Glad to see you taking crits on board. :) One suggestion might be to go a bit darker on the rabbit before lightening him? That way you'll get more contrast. Maybe differentiate the values of the two mountains as well - here's an example of atmospheric perspective - notice how things become lighter / more desaturated the further away they are from the viewer:

http://images.encarta.msn.com/xrefmedia/sharemed/targets/images/pho/t629/T629048A.jpg

Blackxedgexkid, good to see you post, where were you on Thurs? ;) A good start here, I'd work on the anatomy more and really get a lot of fast studies going, even more than the requisite say 10-15 - however many it takes to get 10 solid comps. Definitely collect reference for the figure, in particular the hands and any anatomy. Keep going!

stridiggio, haha, I like this new direction, that's fairly hilarious! :D Nice sketch as well, looking forward to how this develops.

Mu, that's looking really solid! Like the concept, though technically you could say she looks like a post Hugh Heffner bunny. ;) Good stuff, my main suggestion is to watch the perspective on the ellipses etc. Nice work!

gingerbreadman, you're welcome :) good start and looking forward to your next step. What's going to go in front of the arm? Might be nice to have something of secondary focus there? Just a thought.

RussellDickerson, I like the earlier sketch without the heavy outlines better...leaves more to the imagination, but it's up to you how to proceed...I like the huge bunny that I could imagine could be fairly terrifying. :) Looking forward to more.

HInoRYUU, nice, looking good so far, just watch those lights and darks / think of the value relationships, especially in a full color painting. Strong start!

borroriow, looks great! Would love to see more subtleties in the sky, but the bunny has a great start! Looking forward to your progress.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Rebeccak - Thanks! The black outlines are more for me, I've lately tried to rough sketch them in to see if the final art is really going to make any sense. They won't be there on the final version. I read about someone doing that as a test for their own work some time ago, I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm hoping to have a new one up here tomorrow that's much further along, but I have a paying gig to get done first. Thanks!

thx alot rebecca and yeah i know about the rabbit and well the image is WAY different now then the one ive posted and i got some nice things on my mind to improve it tho i think that the original size (2000x2000)wont do for the amount of details i want to insert so i may have to make it larger :D and yeah about the enviorment a wise man told me that as it gets further away from the viewer things have less contrast so thats a sentance that i didnt forget ^_^

Thank you Rebeccak and acb12! I'm gonna check the lights and darks on it. Actually, it had much less contrast: I had to duplicate the digital watercolor layer to have some. I'm still learning painter and there's a lot of things that don't go exactly as I want... i.e. I wanted to add some dark to the fur, but I couldn't blend it to the existing color (the only blender I found that works on DWC blended it with white). I think it's related with the layers, since I didn't paint on the canvas... But when I tried to drop it to the canvas, I couldn't modify it any further (and I couldn't unlock it!). I'm gonna check a book I bought for Painter X, but if you have any advice... I'd like to add some fur texture, but all those tools just confuse me (I'm using just Digital Watercolors and Pens).

Thanks again, and I'll try to get something new soon! By now, I just corrected the right ear (it was too long :) )

Best regards,

Well I was bored at work today so I couldn't resist sketching bunnies :p

Here's what I came up with:

This bunny lost some parts but cleverly replaced them with some mechanical "tools"
As times are hard after the big impact, a rabbit has to be able to defend itself, right?
This one has just slain a hungry fox and has a lot of confidence now, high on adrenaline...
"I survived an atomic bomb, I can handle any fox" is his motto

Will be playing with the composition some more (see smaller sketch below)...
http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/workshops/IFW_002/Image0243_resize.jpg

I've not read all the comments from everyone so if something was already pointed out, please ignore my ignorance :)

Rebecca
Nice start! The head seems very small to me, however... who knows what fallout might do to bunnies hehe

borroriow
Really promising! That looks like the scariest bunny I've ever seen lol

HInoRYUU
Is she evil? she (it looks feminin to me) seems to be quite happy, even though she seems to be swinging a gun... Perhaps you could push her expression to a somewhat more extreme emotion?

Mu
Definitely an original approach! Looking forward to your next update...

RussellDickerson
I like the strong perspective, though the bottom part of the picture doesn't read too well at the moment... You're up to quite a challenge there! Very promising!

gingerbreadman
Nice start, looks pretty agressive, your bunny :)
I'd say google up some nice bunny images, a furless bunny will show some muscles and bones underneath that skin...

stridiggio
REally like your entry so far. Perhaps bringe the angle lower so you can bring the bunny a bit more prominently in the image?

Blackxedgexkid
Looking good! Any updates?

acb12
Why not bend that road a bit? It looks a bit dull this straight forward.
I'd suggest to brighten things up here and there as well... lead the viewer with contrast ;)

Gord-MacDonald
Looking forward to see that one develop!

Nothingness
Wow, interesting concept!

Sorry if I forgot anyone...

Hi Rebecca,

though technically you could say she looks like a post Hugh Heffner bunny.

let's just say, we witness a moment after a revelation... (apocalypse)

:D

(although I just got an idea how to introduce some madmaxiness into the whole thing...)

I know what you mean with the ellipses - we hates them.

*sigh

thanks for the suggestions!

Mu

updatey. (WIP #4)

mweheheehhe - I managed to get that mad maxian stuff in there, I guess.

Now, with this I have a value range on the figure ranging from nearly black (6%) to nearly white (95%) and I would now go and try to colour it ( )

Any feedback welcome:

RussellDickerson

NR43 - I reworked the bottom part of the picture yesterday quite a bit, I think the perspective will work a little better. She's been flipped the other way, and her head is in a slightly different pose that should be a little more workable. I'm going to try and post a new version when I get home tonight.

On the perspective, I'm trying to look at things as differently as I can on projects. When I'm getting the initial sketches for a project out, I'm trying to take a look at the first versions and seeing what would be better -- more dramatic, more challenging, funnier, whatever the case might be.

Of course, then I have to pull off whatever thing comes to mind, that's the trick. :banghead:

Thanks!

well this is my progress so far:

http://i44.tinypic.com/2ppljr6.jpg

increased the image to 4500x4500 so i think ill have plenty of room to fill in the tiny details (i rly rly like working on the tiny details :arteest: )and started colorizing the mountains (well for now only trying to determin hows everything will be effected by the light source and theres still lots of work to be done ) and so i havent refined any of the lightning and didnt get to the tiny details yet at all ...started colorizing the cofee cup and made an initial bunny texturizing tho i doubt yull see any of that untill ill post the close ups and well finish everything ^_^

btw rebecca if ill post an image with closeups (like devided into squars and each square is a different close up) will it still count as one image and can i make it larger then 800x600 ?

hopefully im on the right track here and as ill work the lightning ill try to work the perspective issues and ive also started covering the road with sand cuz the city will be covered with it abit too ^_^
C&C are welcomed :D

I have a question about perspective that's actually been bugging me on another piece I'm working on. I read somewhere that when you paint, shadows are more saturated and hightlights are less saturated, but the opposite seems to be true for perspective?

As the background gets lighter and desaturated, while the foreground is darker and more saturated? If you add a figure to the foreground does it just generally become more saturated, or do you dealing with the figures own shadow/highlight saturation in isolation?

Thanks.

hi some idea came to my mind when i saw this post so here it is
My story line
Those bunnies created in a secret lab were designed as weapon (very dangerous when upset).Their DNA were changed and they can rise at very high temperature and burn everything around them.
The results were far better than expected. Some bunnies managed to escape and reproduced with normal bunnies.Only a few humans survived...
Now the earth is filled of survival bunnies (damn those bunnies!! :-) ).

However some of them are human friendly.
Jessy and her bunny are chased by snipers willing to kill the survival bunny. .
will they survive?...tadaa

Great stuff so far everybody!

Picolo - Nice story and execution. :) Why are there lasers coming from the buildings?

acb12 - Looks like it's coming along. One thing that I find a bit distracting is how there is such a harsh transition in value between mountain and flat ground. Maybe it was a result of starting to coloring it? I would recommend that before you go too further with anything else, try to add some dramatic shadows to the bunny and his accessories.

NR43 - I like the concept! Your smaller composition looks good.

Rebeccak - Great stuff so far! The background is awesome. The top of the head and ears look a little bit strange to me. I might have a hard time telling it was a rabbit if I didn't know already. Also, maybe the bottom left corner of the composition could use more interest.

Borroriow - Very nice. The only thing I noticed is that one eye seems a bit smaller than the other, or perhaps shaped differently.

HInoRYUU Good start! Her right ear seems to be coming out the middle of the back of her head.

RussellDickerson That's a fun story and I'm digging the perspective/composition. Keep up the good work!

gingerbreadman The sketch looks like a good start. Think about how you want to light the scene.

stridiggio I love your idea! Can't wait to see your progress.

Mu The value structure is coming along well. I don't quite understand the decision to put the black outline around her and make the background so light. It kind of looks like a sticker put on another image.

Blackxedgexkid Good start with the concept and composition sketches. Keep it up!

Seanmauney Looking good so far! I'm not sure I would guess it's a rabbit though. I think maybe the eyes are a bit low and the top of the head is a bit too large and pointed, maybe google some rabbit images.

about your comment : well first of all thx for commenting :bounce:
and are you talking about two different issues with the pic?
on which flat ground (or area of it )are you talking when you say harsh transition of values ,is it the ground that the bunny is on which interacts with the closer mountain or the one below that interacts with the other mountain?
and about the rabbit and accesorries...well  i sometimes forget i need to raise the details of everything together and forget some stuff behind when i get to the small details sometimes ^_^ its because there is alot of work to be done on the rest of the things in compared that that small ashtray and bunny :D
and what do you mean by dramatic shadows ?
thx again for commenting and looking forward to understand the issues you were talking about and get it sorted :arteest:

Blackxedgexkid, looks like your bunnies have an attitude. :)

borroriow, I wouldn't want to run into that bunny at night!

NR43, glad to see you doing this one. I love the story and what you have so far.

picolo, wow, great job!

sketchius, great sketches!

shapemaster, that is one rabid rabbit!

I call mine the Project RABBIT(Robotic Alliance for Building a Better Industrial Tomorrow.) I have actually decided to make it a personal project for which this workshop will be the first of many paintings, because I saw a lot of potential in the story for exploring various themes and styles, and practicing effective storytelling and composition. I am still working on the story, but it is about the rise and fall of RABBIT, a global corporation that emerges out of nowhere at the end of World War III in the mid-21st centry.

I don't have a WIP for the painting yet, but here is what I have so far on the design of my bunny robot. They will be called Double b's (from the logo on them). I still need to refine it and work on the hands and the feet, but I am pretty happy with the general concept. While looking at rabbit skeletons, I noticed a big curve on their spine, more pronounced tham other animals. So I decided to somehow make it a design element, and it resulted in the crouch mode, which enables Double b's to maneuver through tight spaces, and also travel at a high speed.

ho the possibilities
well looking forward to see how yull progress with this idea and again great job on the creativity ^_^

God, there's so many approaches and great work in this thread, I feel overwhelmed when trying to give a bit of feedback, here.

acb12 - one thing you might improve on is that the bunny hole is just a black mass. Give it a bit of value range and add a slope where the hole starts.

picolo - that's an awesome approach and I totally love the green light emanating from the bunny and all. Crazy. Also, her cute attachment to the weird creature and the graffito on the wall (LOL)

sketchius - I really like your concept thumbnails, they look very vivid. The look in the rabbit's eyes on your latest drawing is great - anxious and kinda crazy. Maybe indicate what it's looking at?
My decision for the outline as well as the two value structures stem from my attempt at making this a character concept plus scenery rather than an illustration. I wanted to sort of detach the main subject (her) from the bit of background I added. I will even push this further by coloring her with a wider contrast range than the background (if at all) and adding selective texture. It's a kind of finger exercise in concept art methods...

RussellDickerson - from what I can see you shouldn't jump into colour right away. I am having massive problems to work with colour in a convincing way - that's why I think I can spot similar problems in other people's work, but feel free to disagree if I am too blunt, here. There's a lot of loose line work, a starting point for values and a few patches of colour. None of which is wrong, but everything put together that way makes a very incoherent impression on me. Maybe get rid of the colour for now and concentrate on getting the values right and convincing for what you want to describe. Colour can come later at any point of time.

shapemaster - great gesture on your concept.

mu -thx alot for your comment if thats the major thing to improve atm (cuz you didnt mention anything else :D) then im in a very good shape ^_^ .

sketchius-nice work i rly like the new props an idea for a sketch keep going and choose the one that fits you best.on my opinion both of them are rly good ^_^

so far ive colorized the sand on my pic ,made an indication of shadows to the rabbit and accessories started to indicate the light source better and started to figure out how the light will go threw from the lightsource to the rest of the scene starting with bouncing light and how it goes betwin the buildings ~_~ lots of work to be done yet and as you can prob see there is something written on the news paper and i am planning to write the story of the pic on the news papper like an article saying" 50 years have past since rabbits became the dominant race " or something like that :D i have great plans for this pic and as ive said in one of the early messages i hope im not aiming to high with this one and hopefully i will be able to finish on time :D

Yay! Finally got round to getting something done for this, though it's hard, since i've been doing it at work, and I can only print stuff off and rescan it at home at the mo thanks to rediculous security measures at work! But, this should be a start!

I've gone down the playboy bunny too, but with more of a madmax/FF 12's fran feel to her. I love the idea of a badass blonde in rediculous heels packing more metal than an artillery tank. Just playing with silhouetted costume/design ideas at the moment, and currently loving the idea of the bullet feed through the bracers on the bottom right, and the hair of the bottom left. Everything else is up for discussion though. This will then go on to be fleshed out in a proper drawing/painting, and if I get time/the inclination, I might do a full ortho for her too, and keep her as a portfolio piece.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/xephyri/bunnieeeees.jpg

Some lovely work going on in here too... here's a few comments before I run off to bed... Loving that sharp focus you build to Becca... it amazes me how you do that (And do you mind Becca? I don't thinkI've ever asked), building with soft tones. Sketchius, I love the idea, all the bunny refs are brill, and the sketch looks good so far. Looking forward to seeing colour. Heozart I really like the original direction you've taken. Maybe think about the way the sketches are laid out so they make logical sense to a viewer? Either start with a finished model and break it down, or vice versa? Shapemaster, loving the extreme proportions going on in that bunny... almost has a Dali feel to it, especially with the teeth and all. Any plans for a background? Russell, I really like the feel of the painting you've got so far, but compositionally the main bunny element seems really sqaushed into that left corner, giving the buildings more focus. Maybe you could keep as is, but elongate it more and include more of the figure? Interesting that you're going for a more daytime scene too... should be challenging! Nineeyes, I adore the design you've got going on here, he really really feels like a horrible mutant, what with the skull shaped end to his face. Can't wait to see more of him.

Mu - I tend to use color to give me an idea of where things are heading, it helps me keep it sorted out in my head. I tend to be a bit chaotic working on things, sometimes I start with characters, or background or even some other element. I often put in the background as a reminder of the feel of it. Thanks though, I'll definitely think about it!

Zephyri - Thanks! I'm hoping in the image to play off of the small rabbit close to us, and the massive, building-sized one in the high background. All of my sketching is still in there, so it throws off the feel a bit. Hopefully tonight I can get things realized a little more.

Great stuff all, and keep it the good work on your own pieces. It's very interesting to see all of the different approaches to it.

Thanks!

Hey All, the posts are rolling in and starting to form nicely.
Thanks Rebeccak, Mu and NR43.
the ears are strange indeed but there should be something that makes it something else. So we'll see how it ends up.
I'm still building up the main shape details of the muscles, and hope they start to look believable for this kind of creature. When i got everything correct it will be dimmed a little and then the second detail will be added.
It's kind of the first sculpting so there are still major issues.

Here is a preview but without showing too much details from other sides. When i get it done overall i'll post some more.
Cheers and have fun.

Hey, nice work everyone. I've finally got free time and came up with this. just a quick base mesh right now.

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/7555/basemodel.png

story: Before the war genetically modified bunnies were in demand every kid had one because of their immunity to sickness and long lifespans. After the war the fallout killed most livestock, but these rabbits were immune and mutating unusually large. They were further altered to produce excessive amounts of milk. They've now replaced most livestock and are vital the survival of the human race.

Thanks!

Your bunny is looking awesome :)

Michael See - Oh my, OH MY !!! Gee man... what happened ? Got a turbo hand eh?

Lovely art piece. With this pace you can make 3 pieces each workshop at least ;)

dolgopolov - nice big bunny

sketchius - hahaha - nice detail of bugs bunny. awesome piece.

NR - keep it up - seems a terminator bunny hehehehe

borroriow - wow ! hahhah that's a freaking bunny :D nice to have you on-board.

Everybody doing great, nice to follow up. Will get my wacom working on my piece soon.
btw - will finish that komodo as well.

Hehe, something I notice is that everyone is including a female human in their images, something you're certainly welcome to do but not required to do. :) I guess it's because of including the background image in the banner, but actually I think it's sparking some cool ideas. :)

Argigogerger: lol! love the idea of the cowbunny...:D

Dolgopov: looking really good! The only thing is I'd suggest desaturating and making the colours bluer as they recede into the distance-it'd put more emphasis on the woman and the (adorable!) giant bunny.

stridiggo: keep it going! I'd play around with the contrast a bit more though...brighter explosion, rim light around the bunny's back, blue night atmosphere...that sort of thing??

zephyri: the top left is my favourite- the thing on her wrist makes her look a little less graceful and I like the curve of the wrist...sorry, just a little thing, but I like it! It's nice and simple as well, better silhouette. I like her hair...wish I had hair like that! You might wnt to google Gil elvgren's stuff for inspiration??

Here's mine...

This is General Poodly, one of a long line of the mutant rabbit generals. He came about as a result of a nuclear war that killed off all the humans- only the strongest rabbits survived, but somewhat modified. They became smarter and formed armies against each other. This particular general is at the head of the Diffidil army, which rewards bravery with ribbons (all the metal was melted during the nuclear blast but somehow the ribbons survived).

However, a particularly brainy rabbit with a crest of white hair has just discovered E=mc^2.......

crits welcome as always. :)

ROFL i was about to post the same comment as you and then i scrolled down abit and saw your comment rebecca .
it is a nice rabbit but ive already seen it in the dominance war 4 thread >.>

well concerning my pic:
while i was drawing i suddently encountered a prob....the world that im painting is a wasteland and in the middle of the wastes theres this rabbit with a coffee and a news papper? well thats simply wrong....so i came out with a twist in the story:
as the world they evolved to had a low supply of natural resources water and places to grow crops atso the bunnys ,which were smarter then the humens befor them ,invented a thing called underground farms which were formed inside the mountains and used the underground natural water resources for irrigation and this bunny is actually at one of these spots where the employees can rest and relax for abit ^_^
i hope i didnt go that far with the story and im going to add a brochure laying around with an image of how those underground farms look like and also an article about it in the news papper and also when ill finish it and give a link to a high res one you might find some more rabbits in the pic if yull look around carefully :D ^_^

heres my progress for now :
http://i43.tinypic.com/10d5ifm.jpg

befor posting any crits plz read this:
*im aware that the tones of the lights and colours doenst fit very well but im still playing around with the tones and colours .
*mountins-for now ive only worked on the dark tones to define the surface.when im done ill work on the lighter ones to define the lightning of ,hopefully, every crack there is there on the mountains so itll be worth to take a look at the end on the high res image and if itll be good anough so i could post it on my portfolio ....with a big if on the portfolio thingy :D

the things i did:
added an indication of the close ground ,worked abit on the closer mountain .added colour to the sandy ground and added some lights to the city and the sorroundings ,ill deal with blurring the distant things later on ^_^

C&C are more then welcomed at this point ^_^ *closing my eyes and w8ing for the worst to come (>-_-<) *

acb12: aha, too clever, yes adding two layers on top (overlay/Screen)for don't loose the basic color tones and avoid overwrite the values of the pen.
Your work is getting better, but looking the light source perhaps it needs more contrast on the back of the bunny, I mean Strong Shadows.

Paperclip: Thanks for the tips, I'll be following these. I'm scared looking your General Poodly, :D it appears very mysterious to me. Good luck with that!:)

stridiggio- thx alot for your comment ^_^ well ive made changed and still am making changes to the pic with the small details now.ive increased all of the contrast in the image and will go on the tones of the shadows of the closer objects next ^_^

as for your pic its nice to see the progress yuve made so far but i think its still too early to comment on anything so ill just w8 (anxiously @_@) for updates ^_^

mu- i like the changes you made tho i think that those two versions both lighter and darker were ok but it depends on which enviroment you wanna add to it :D
keep updating ^_^

rebecca i have a question - if ill post a gif file with animation of some things im adding to the pic (minor pics that ill add for the news papper adds or something like that) or maybe a series of pics which shows the progress ive had since the start, will every pic on the slide show will count as a seperated pic or will you count the gif file as 1 pic ?
cuz im adding all of those pics to the pic that it will be nicer to show them seperatly and or as an adition to the final piece ( yeah im getting closer to finally use that word :bounce: ) a gif file with the progress from the begining .

Dolgopolov - that's a giant mutant hero rabbit. Although it does not look like it wanted to be saved. Great drawing and humorous approach!

Djampa - you got it! I was wondering if there was someone out there who got my meaning...:scream:

As most people were confused by the background (although Djampa got the meaning...:D ) I decided to remove it and replace it with something that would make it clearer that I wanted to go for a conceptual piece only (should also help to understand why I concentrated on the figure alone...)

yup, something like that! ;)
i want something like the same as i already have, but add some specular. And changing this in the material menu does nothing. So i guess it's because it's a standard material and you can't change this.

well first of all you can check at the zbrush downloadble material library for materials that may help you or something close to what you are looking for :D :

http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/library/

in this link yull see that they have some explenations about where and how to creat your own material and and or modifying an existing one and they have pictures and explenations on each category of a change you have in the material menu.

they have a nice line there sorrounded with a red line that says:
"The MatCap material properties only have an effect when you are creating or modifying a MatCap (http://www.zbrush.info/docs/index.php/MatCap) material using the Tool:MatCap "

hopefully itll help ^_^

Worked on the lighting quite a bit. Originally I planned on having the primary lighting coming from the right and the secondary from the left, but I ended up swapping them. I feel like I'm about finished. I still need to detail the label on the leftmost carrot can and clean up here and there. I might erase some of the sketch lines, but for the most part I think I'll leave them in.

Any feedback is appreciated :) I'm hoping to get some time to write a new round of comments.

Hey everyone, I'm soooo sorry for the lack of posting...it's been a bit of a crazy period for me, in the middle of moving and am lacking furniture at the moment (sitting on the floor at home doesn't really rock!) :D so my apologies...have been checking in and there have been some great posts and updates recently!

NR43, funny sketch! Any more progress? :)

acb12, looking good so far! I might suggest making the background mountain a little shorter than the foreground one, to reinforce the sense of atmospheric perspective. Also the city seems a little soft, did you want to make that sharper, or will it be in ruins / rubble?
Also the bottom of the rabbit (its hindquarters) seem a litte flat, maybe round them out a little?

picolo, love it, that's great! Glad to see the step by steps as well. :) The graffiti cracks me up. :D

sketchius, love the initial sketch and this is coming along fantastically! Thanks for the feedback!

NineEyes, looking good, hope you'll post more progress!

RussellDickerson, good to see you still working on this, looking forward to updates.

shapemaster, great sketch! Can't wait to see more. :)

Heozart, love the concept on this!! Keep going!!

Zephyri, great to see you join in!! Any more progress on this? Actually I'm probably not using a soft brush as much as I used to...mainly it looks soft because of a layer of dark tone that has been added on top and erased out to get focus in the lights.

Danny-k, nice to have you join - I like the 4 eyed bunny, would like to see you push that further as a concept - maybe do something extra with the legs?

Agigaherger, haha, hilarious! Love the cow/bunny!

dolgopolov, hahaha, love the initial line sketch!! Keep going! Would love to see you push the ranges of values in your painting.

Djampa, thanks!

stridiggio, hey I like the muted colors. Will be neat to see how you bring focus to it. :)

Mu, I like this! I still feel that there is a bit too strong of an outline around things that could be diminished by bringing the tone of the background up to the value of the line...the linework is hindering what is otherwise a very convincingly dimensional bunny! :)

HInoRYUU, really push the values on your piece, I think that will really help - try grayscaling to see how the form is reading, I guarantee it will boost the sense of form. :)

Gord-MacDonald, cool, will the be a painting?

Blackxedgexkid, nice to see you post! I think you have a good start, the main thing I'd suggest is adding dimension and depth to the eyes by looking at reference and seeing the roundness of the eyeballs. Also watch the centerline of the character. Keep going!

gpepper, hope to see you in this!

Nothingness, looking really cool! Some parts might be a little overlumpy :D but overall can't wait to see where this goes.

barryman, thanks for joining, nice start! Good start to the values, I might suggest giving the creature a little bit of a twist so that it's not quite so frontal?

thx for the comment rebecca ^_^ sorry to hear yure sitting on the floor atm :D hopefully yull sort out this moving issue soon <(^ _ ^)>

well if it was that easy to fix the mountain id do so....tho i think ill just have to do it ...because due to a foolish workflow i didnt managed the layers properly and now the black and white pic is all on one layer and ill have to merge delete fix and repaint the mountain area again @_@....well ill see what i can do ^_^

and the image atm is far more different then the one ive posted so ill work on it abit today and post an update later :D

ive asked a question in an early message about posting if i post a gif slide show instead of a pic will it still count as one image or will every pic on the slide show will count as a different image ?

mimimisyell - these are so charming! I don't know why, but I like the very first one the most. Somehow so funny yet very very sad, you know?

Rebecca,

thanks so much. Just today I was feeling that I needed a bit of feedback to give me an idea for the final steps. And what you say makes sense to me, the gap between the ink outline and the background is too harsh.
I will try both adjusting the bg or the line to unify it a bit more and report back....:D

acb12, hey please feel free to post a process gif, that won't count toward the image total. :) Sorry for missing your question earlier!

Michelle, look great, glad you've posted! Love the bike idea and it's good to see your progress. Maybe the ellipses need a little bit of tweaking but overall great stuff!!

Mu, no problem! Glad that helped, I'm back in business now with a proper desk and even seating, haha, so again my apologies for the delayed responses. Now I've no excuses. :)

Oh also it's amazing what happens when you've no internet / furniture :D, some traditional drawings actually happen...just some randomness:

dhrogus, hey, interesting, glad to see you join. I think the texture looks a little flat in the torso / rib cage area - but I like that this truly looks apocalyptic! Keep pushing the modeling, I think, it would be nice to see you go further with this.

gingerbreadman, hey good to see your update...I might suggest increasing the value contrast a little - also the eye of the person is a front view eye, you'd want that to be drawn from a side view, I'd think. Keep going and pushing this.

AudreyG, not bad, it's hard to gage this from the scan - in PS you might try adjusting the levels a little (Image > Adjustment > Levels) - I like the overall direction but your drawing ability isn't showing as strongly in this one as in earlier pieces. Keep going!

gpeaslee, I think this looks great...nice detail, there's clearly a lot of work put into this.

There is always a little girl taking care of rabbit. I made it the other way around. They teamed up for their abilities. The girl can be stealthy, crawl, reach places which rabbit cannot. Rabbit is protecting the girl with heavy fire power.
Rabbit's name is Bubbles, Girl is Nalia, and the cat is Dara

Here's the latest version, though it still has a ways to go. I'm probably going to soften or blur the giant rabbit and at least the tops of the buildings to give a better idea of distance, but we'll see.

I'd like to get the car and the girl done tonight, but sleep may come first.

Thanks!

Sorry peepz I've been super-busy... will hopefully find some time to update my sketch tonight!

Rebeccak I like that one best of your 2 last creatures! Cute and horrifying at the same time :)
gpeaslee Lovely inking!
gingerbreadman great to see you are tackling this one in grayscale first! Now take some distance from your screen when looking at your bunny image and squint your eyes so you only see the image in a blurry way. Because the branch has values that are much darker than the rest of the image, which has somewhat equal values, the contrast in value is highest between the branch and the background. The viewer's eye is always lead to those points where contrast is highest. This is something that happens naturally for everyone. Now if we use this info to lead the eye of the viewer to those particular parts of the image we determine, we have ourselves some focal points. So try to decrease the contrast between treebranch and background, and try to increase the contrast between background and bunny (particularly the head).
AudreyG Hey cool sketch! This would look awesome if you'd ink it, check out gpeaslee's entry.
mimimisyell beautiful bunch of sketches! I really like the boy with the backpack carrying his bunny.
acb12 If you would increase the value of the sky behind that city, and then darken the shadows the buildings are dropping on the terrain, you could lead the eye of the viewer back to the bunny more easily.
Isatche LOL so funny! A few more highlights here and there would make the bunny pop out a lot better I think
stridiggio Awesome! I know you are keeping things a bit blurry to depict movement, but I would suggest to try to keep some sharpness around your focal points to improve readability a bit more.
RussellDickerson
Think about edges. The bunny, being in the background (even though it is huge) will have less sharp edges than the person in the front. I'd also suggest to wait with adding dust and debris until you've clearly defined all the main forms in your painting. You will lose time trying to fit it in it's environment if you change your mind about something and want to change it. The reflections on those windows are as bright as the real sky. If you tone those down a bit, it will look a lot more like windows. Really interesting composition in this piece!

Last day, today isn't it?

Thank you, but I had no more time to finish it, since I was very busy these days and the deadline is here. Hey all, due to some restrictions from the software i'm not gonna push this one further then it currently is. I'll just see it as an early sculpting practice and i'm happy with what i've learned so far.
There are some areas that do need some more detail, but i'll leave it to be what it is.

acb12, not a bad result, you've come pretty far on this piece, and the concept does make me chuckle. :) The bunny's bottom still looks a bit flat to me...

Isatche, very cute! Wish we could have seen some WIPs on this, I think the piece could use some rendering love, but as an initial / fast sketch it's effective. :)

stridiggio, really like the mood and colors / I agree though that it's a bit soft...maybe some harder edges here and there will help but this image is really entertaining!

RussellDickerson, nice to see your progress, I'm thinking of extending the Workshop a bit so people can finish their pieces.

NR43, thanks for the comments!

Nothingness, very cool! A bit bumpy perhaps but just loads of potential...hopefully you can finish this!

Babu027, great to see you post! A nice sketch with a lot of energy and life to it.

JDoronio, very cool sketch, this made me laugh! It's a really solid set up sketch for a painting, so I'll be expecting a strong rendering next week!

evmei7, I like these sketches as well, the middle one in my opinion seems the strongest...which is the one which you want to render up?

Great to see the strong posts, looking forward to more.

hi folks,

so much going in here, I will reply later on!

Here is WIP#8, I had a few technical troubles finding a way to lighten the pure black ink outline up. But here it is.

Once I found out why there show up these strange artefacts after dropping my layers I will post my final.

paperclip

Looking great, Mu! You've improved so much....

The artifacts may be from you trying to merge a normal layer with another layer which has a layer mode like soft light...? I

Mu
03-08-2009, 11:27 AM
Thanks clippy!

r mode like soft light...? I

This "I" at the end of your post makes it look as if you had been forced to leave the house immediately in the middle of your reply. Is there a thrilling story behind this...:D

I found it out. It was from the impasto layer. I couldn't remove the impasto strokes in a way which would stop them from interfering with the upper layers, so I switched impasto off.

So, this would be my final. Thanks everyone for the feedback and replies. I will post my 2cts later on!
