I've been trying for the past few hours to get a curve (circle) to extrude along a path...over time. Let me try to explain (I'm sure I'm going to fail at this.)

I've read a million tutorials explaining how to extrude a circle and a path to create a tube by selecting the circle, then the curve, and applying an extrude. The thing I'm trying to create is different, where it starts off as nothing, then extrudes along the path as time goes on until at the end it's a full tube. It seems as if when you have the extrude method set to "tube" the length option greys out. The other methods don't seem to follow the path, and end up just making a straight tube. I tried extruding a polygon along the curve (new in maya 5.0 I think) but again there's no way for me to keyframe it that I can see.
The best way I can think of explaining the effect I'm trying to get is that there's this baby snake, but then it grows to be a really big snake.

I hope I explained it ok, does anyone have any insights about how to do this?
Any help would be appreciated :D :) :p But as of now I'm really frustrated with this lol.

when u create the extrude for tube, make sure you have the Curve Range set to Partial(in options box) and history is on.

This will create 2 xtra nodes that are keyable. They are called subcurves and they are in the channel box. Select them and use the show manipulator tool to interactively edit the length and sweep of the extrude.

You rock! I tried the partial thing but never saw those subcurves.
