Hi all,

I'm looking to get a job as a concept or production artist and I'm just working on building up my environment illustration portfolio at the moment. Below are digital value studies (Photoshop) for a series of illustrations, loosely tried around a children's storybook. I'll be moving to much tighter color illustrations after I finish tweaking these.

Since this is just in the rough value phase, I'd especially appreciate constructive feedback and criticism. At the moment the illustrations really aren't intended to convey the story, more just fleshing out the world and environments.

Guess I can't embed them all, so here are links to the rest:

Cool! The tower of the poster was a temple at my hometown!! :buttrock:
Great studies on Chinese architecture and culture. :applause: and personally, I love your design on the dragon, really creative by mixing a mask and a dragon's body!!

Here's some tips. I've done some research on ancient chinese architecture before due to one of my project... those building usally gives mistirious felling cause by it's gigantic size and spaces... just like the forbidden city on Beijing.
And usually the ceiling of a temple builded with sculpted woods, or painted with lot's of painting.

About the teahouse exterior, the mountain surround it looks too creepy and it don't really suit the ancient chinese enviorment. :p

WOW. This is a really strong image.
Is this strictly a digital painting or or combo of traditional mediums as well?

Thanks for the comments.

The painting is strictly digital, although it started from a pencil sketch.

Well, looking at this great stuff I think your odds of finding a job in this area are pretty solid, allthough I do not know how market is at the moment.

I really like the woman's closeup, temple exterior, tea exterior well nm all quite frankly. Hope I can help you even more with some comments below

temple exterior- camera angle is great, like this one most. Cool cloud style and three style. Only you could ad some more 'see trough' leaves on the edges to make it look less solid, maybe some sun arrays for more dynamics.

temple interior- like this one least, somehow it looks flat, dragon's awesome but maybe you should lighten background up a bit, or blur, or maybe it's the wierd perspective looking roof that bothers me.

teahouse exterior- really love the light effects, maybe comment above that background=too creepy for environment has a point, but besides that I think background is not as creative as teahouse.

interior- great looking, love the details and your smooth shading style

-=overall comment could be that your dteail level is great and I love your shading, just keep in mind that you don't do too much detail in background=-

But their all great man, maybe I'll catch up on ya sometime, you

Thanks for the crit, it definitely helps.

I'll have more sky show through on the edges of the tree in the temple exterior.

I agree on the temple interior too, I'll fix the perspective problems first and see if it falls into place, otherwise maybe tweak the values on the background as well.

For the teahouse exterior, it's actually set in a crater on the moon (ok, a moon with water and clouds), which is why the lighting is so stark. Of course, just because it's "right" doesn't mean that it works, so maybe I'll try that one again.

how long does it take you to draw such a kind of image?

About 1 to 3 days for sketching and the value painting. Coloring should take another 3 days each, but those are on hold for a bit while I work on some contract projects.
