Well beeing honest and all,at University we are using 3ds max and at home i am doing modeling on my own inside Maya.
Our last assignment on the university was doing a car.Using 3ds max I can say that even though its a really easy way to make it(shift and drag the edges,do edge loops, connects and adjust vertices) for me was a big pain on the butt.
Having modelled a car inside Maya before I can say that NURBS made the day concerning car modeling.EP curves were by far the easiest way for me to create the car.(3ds max spline tools are really bad so you would have to do shift+dragging edges).
On the other hand it depends where you feel better to work on.As you have not said how much experience you got in the programs,if you are starting out, give a try on C4D.Most people I have talked to,find the program easier in order to get on the workflow on modeling.
Here are some sites and tutorials for you to check up
http://www.carbodydesign.com/tutorials/car-3d-modeling-tutorials.php (the lamborghini tutorial rocks for C4D)
www.smcars.net (http://www.smcars.net) (has a tutorial forum with a hell of a lot modeling tutorials, mostly MAYA and 3ds max.Has the infamous box modeling tutorial for cars. The tutorial can be found also here in cgsociety)
www.3d-palace.com (http://www.3d-palace.com) (Has the audi a3 tutorial which is great for beginners inside 3ds max)
http://poisoncg.com/tutorials/tutorials.html (lamborghini murcielago tutorial, its on chinese if i am not mistaked but pictures are very informative. Its a 3ds max tutorial)

the best program is the one that you become more familiar with...
even though what you are looking for here is a method to work with. Which TOO has to do with your personal comfort to use.
Experiment around..and decide what is best for you. Don't think of it as a waste of time, even research can be a big part of your learning.

My suggestion to you is to maybe start off with something a little more manageable. Take an easier target and learn your techniques first. Modeling a car right off the bat will no doubt be very frustrating and can get in a negative mood toward 3d. You have to learn to crawl and walk before you can run. :)
