View Full Version : Digital-Tutors Releases Two Stereoscopic 3D Training Titles
Digital-Tutors 02-17-2009, 08:39 PM Hi everyone,
The Digital-Tutors’ team is proud to announce ‘Stereoscopic 3D in Maya’ and ‘Stereoscopic 3D in After Effects,’ the latest additions to the growing library of interactive training for emerging digital artists.
‘Stereoscopic 3D in Maya’ offers artists over 2 hours of project-based training to learning practical workflows to making stereo 3D imagery and provides step-by-step examples of how to gain total control over the cameras, characters, and environments to create one of the most powerful effects in cinema with Maya 2009.
‘Stereoscopic 3D in After Effects’ provides nearly 3 hours of self-paced training and an in-depth guide to gaining a deeper understanding of the mathematics involved in making stereo images, building stereo camera rigs, creating safer stereo renders, and producing powerful effects in post production with After Effects.

If only this could have come out a year ago, before I started my stereoscopic final year project. At least I'll understand and appreciate the new camera rigs a whole lot better.

I love your dvds and all, but 75 bucks for a 2.5 hour dvd? Why is this ones price so much higher?

If you have ever used a digital tutors dvd you would know why. First off they come with TONS of assets......secondly you will learn as much if not more than if you took a class...and you can do it at your own pace. They also come with a lot of really cool plugins/mel scripts. Totally worth it!

Do these techniques transfer over to a newer technology i.e. polarized glasses?
These look great, personally I can never work or even gauge my work with the red/blue glasses.

Wouldn't you need a specialized monitor to work with polarized glasses?

I have purchased multiple DT dvd's. It was a question of why this 2.5 hour dvd is 75 bucks when they've got 10 hour dvds for 50 bucks on there.

Supply and demand my friend. Right now stereo artists are in GREAT demand.....not many people have any knowledge.....so if you already know what you are doing you will land that gig way easier than someone else. They know this and are charging accordingly!

Yes, I do believe so.

You couldn't use polarized glasses with any type of display....it works by projecting images through two projectors with inverse polarized lenses...so unless you are using 2 projectors in your home/office you can't use polarized lenses at home.
There are 3D systems for home use tho that flip on and off the visibility of the two eyes and simultaneously displays the alternating eye images on the screen. That is the only glasses tech (other than anaglyph) that will work on a display.
Then there is the awesome autostereo which works similarly to dvd boxes and movie posters that are 3D....so no glasses required!

Yes, the techniques are the exact same. The different display technologies all run on the same principle of have two separate images for each eye and some sort of filtering system.

Awesome thanks.
I wish this was in max I would snap it up in a second.

Stereography is app agnostic. The same technique works for all the programs.

Hey All,
Let us quickly address some of the questions that were brought up...
These training titles are priced higher due to the amount of time in R/D for the topic (we assure you, you're going to be successful with creating your own S3D work or working within an established pipeline). These 2 products (After Effects especially) both took more research/testing/and discovery time. The best measure of success for us on this was being able to teach it in a short amount of time (2.5-3 hours).
Learning how S3D works and the principles of using the cameras, layout, environments, speed, etc...as mentioned you'll be able to apply to other applications, etc. If you keep the left and right images in full color you can convert them at the end of the pipeline into polarized, anaglyph or even shutter types if you have the requisite hardware.
Enjoy!

thanks for the heads up about this. We are looking at 3d displays (naked eyes) for some projects and I'm sure I could learn something out of this...
bookmarking for future reference..

Let me guess- none of them are cheap! After seeing Coraline I wanted to work with stereoscopic imagery so badly.... :)
