CGTalk - Softimage 3D/XSI

Sorry for asking this question, but can anyone tell me what is the different between the two programs?

Is softimage 3D a totally different software or is it just the latest version?

They are separate programs... SI|3D is the predecessor (or father) of XSI... SI|3D is still used and supported, but is certainly on the way out and there will be no more version releases to 3D.
